> "I generally do not connect to web sites from my own machine, aside from a few sites I have some special relationship with. I usually fetch web pages from other sites by sending mail to a program (see https://git.savannah.gnu.org/git/womb/hacks.git) that fetches them, much like wget, and then mails them back to me. Then I look at them using a web browser, unless it is easy to see the text in the HTML page directly. I usually try lynx first, then a graphical browser if the page needs it."

yeah same here. I actually don't spend too much time on my phone and I feel pretty smug about it until I realise I just replace the smaller screen with the bigger one a lot of the time :<
barbs··on Playa Phone
Yes, there are food vendors and professional DJs etc, so it's not the same. But it's similar in the sense of dedication, creativity and DIY spirit.
barbs··on Playa Phone
Just gave it a go, but I'm getting "That number is no longer in service", so there might be power/connectivity issues?
barbs··on Playa Phone
Whilst I don't think you're necessarily wrong, I would suggest Fusion festival in Germany to come close in terms of scale and dedication.
barbs··on Quake – 30th Anniversary Update
Same with my Wipeout 3 disc
barbs··on Quake – 30th Anniversary Update
Wow, didn't know TF was developed in Melbourne RMIT! That's awesome.
barbs··on Advertise in ChatGPT
Damn, what did Mullvad do?
barbs··on Facebook Is Down
Looks like lots of people (myself in Australia included) are getting the following error message:

"Account Temporarily Unavailable. Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes."

barbs··on The lost joy of music piracy
Were the forums ever backed up anywhere? Given the quality of writing it'd be a shame if it didn't get archived.
barbs··on Collection of Digital Clock Designs
Came here to comment about Tokyoflash's designs, nice to see them here!
barbs··on Exapunks (2018)
There's a good vice article about that very topic.

No, it's the children who are wrong!
barbs··on Dopamine Fracking
Heh, I thought of maple syrup as well. And I'm ashamed to say I prefer the fake stuff! Although it's likely because it's what I had as a child, so there's a strong nostalgia factor.
barbs··on The desperation of NYTimes
This is what I use to block the news feed on FB to prevent doomscrolling.
barbs··on Chuwi Minibook X
Did you also have the screen rotation issue? Curious to know what's causing that.
barbs··on Show HN: Hallucinate – Massively Multiplayer Online Rave
Not sure what part of the world you're from but I'm sure you can find some decent authentic gigs around where people aren't doing it for the likes and follows :)

Honestly, going to a rave with a dancefloor and cool people is kind of lifechanging. It's kind of the environment that a lot of (most?) dance music is made for. Have a great time!

Half-expecting a comment from him here on HN

barbs··on A web page that shows you everything the browser told it without asking
"Your screen is 320 by 568 pixels, rendered at 2x density — which means it is almost certainly a recent, high-end display."

Not quite, I'm on a 2016 iPhone SE

What are these hacker camps you speak of?
barbs··on Write some software, give it away for free
Sounds like a hard lesson in boundaries. No-one is entitled to your time but you.
barbs··on NetHack 5.0.0
I'm going to quote myself from a blog post I wrote back in 2012:

> Nethack is incredibly difficult, and near impossible to win without some knowledge. Whilst it could be argued that one could attain this knowledge through trial and error, it would take many many playthroughs to make any headway, even if you played in the invincible “Wizard” mode. Whilst I would recommend the use of spoilers if you wish to make progress in the game and discover what it has to offer, I wouldn’t suggest reading up on absolutely everything to give yourself an advantage. My general rule of thumb was to look something up when I came across it. I still found the game incredibly challenging, as I was placed in situations that I couldn’t predict or prepare for, and I still had that thrill of discovery and amazement.

barbs··on Your hex editor should color-code bytes
Reminds me of this blog post where someone was trying to reverse-engineer a hand-rolled encryption protocol in a crossword app by colorizing the output and looking for patterns.

That's what Signal does on my iPhone, I thought it was the default?

So many upvotes. And not even any accompanying submission text. I love it.
barbs··on Flighty Airports
Makes me wonder then why they can't afford a team of Android developers to make the Android version.
barbs··on Google details new 24-hour process to sideload unverified Android apps
I'm guessing it's a lot more expensive to install and maintain card readers than to essentially just have signs prompting people to use their phone.
barbs··on The Appalling Stupidity of Spotify's AI DJ
Glad I wasn't the only one. Love how he goes on to say how he's aware that people are unfamiliar with all those names he just dropped.
