barbs··on iPhone 17e
I'm on my 8th year of using my 2016 SE. Have replaced the battery and screen a few times over the years. A fair few of the apps I used stopped supporting iOS 15 so I've got old versions of those apps installed, but WhatsApp, Signal and my banking app still actively support iOS 15 so it works well enough for me, for now.

I have an iPhone 13 mini sitting in a drawer for when I need to switch.

In my experience that's not true at all, but I think a lot of people have that perception, which is sad.
barbs··on Show HN: Micasa – track your house from the terminal
I mean...you could just not have it changing constantly? It seems pretty unnecessary.

The constantly changing "Frequently asked/entertained/daydreamed questions" bit constantly changing keeps moving everything below it up and down and it's really annoying. I am viewing it on a particularly small phone, however.
barbs··on There is unequivocal evidence that Earth is warming (2024)
In this case, it's not exactly like Pascal's wager because there is plenty of scientific evidence of disastrous consequences of not believing in climate change (and preparing accordingly). There's no evidence to suggest that a non-belief in God will send you to hell.

For me, the emdashes and the constant use of "it's not just [X], it's [hyperbolic Y]" gives it away.

I love boardgames too and could wax lyrical about them for ages. Sucks that this article was clearly written by AI.

Shouldn't the sound for when a task finishes be something like "Job done!"? Looking at the table it seems like it makes the sound for acknowledging that it's received an order (e.g. "I can do that").

Oh yes! I remember playing that at a friend's house when I was 5 years old and having my little mind blown. I couldn't believe you could just take any car and go anywhere you wanted.

I later got my hands on a copy of GTA2 and played that a lot, behind my parents' back of course

Fooyin looks to be inspired by foobar2000 that compiles natively on Linux, but I haven't tried it.

Apparently Audacious is a descendant of XMMS, though I haven't used either of them.

barbs··on iPhone 5s Gets New Software Update 13 Years After Launch
I'm on my 8th year of using my original iPhone SE, have replaced the battery a few times and the screen a couple of times. It's still doing what I need it to do on iOS 15, but I noticed a few big names apps have stopped supporting iOS 15 in the past year so the installed versions are the last compatible versions (e.g. the installed versions of Uber and Netflix are > 6 months old).

Performance-wise, it can stutter a bit on modern websites and sometimes in some apps, but otherwise works reasonably well. A few weeks ago I noticed it was struggling more than usual and chewing up more battery, but then I cleared up some disk space and it's been running fine.

The minimum supported iOS version for some of my must-have apps (e.g. WhatsApp, my banking app) is currently iOS 15, so I imagine when that changes I'll need to finally upgrade my phone. Feels like its days are numbered.

Curious - what makes it easier on the 5S? I've replaced the battery and screen on my SE a handful of times and from i can tell from iFixit the process to do the same thing on the 5S looks identical.
barbs··on Use social media mindfully
I only have Facebook, mostly because of local community groups, buy/sell pages, marketplace and some group chats. I find blocking the news feed effectively allows me to use it as a tool without being subject to brainrot.

barbs··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
Shame, Amyl and the Sniffers would've put on a hell of a show ;)

I agree though, Melbourne is absolutely bursting at the seam with events, groups and activities in almost anything you could possibly be interested in. It's particularly noticeable for me coming from Sydney. I saw someone in a local FB group suggest holding a whip-cracking jam meetup in a park and it generated significant interest.

barbs··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
Hah! I had a very similar thought enter mind recently. I used to get shamed for being on screens too much, now the situation seems to have flipped. Who's the nerd now??

Also just an aside - I love your writing style.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but did you patch it to the latest version? I don't know if the in-game updater still works but from memory you could download some sort of patch exe file and update it that way.

barbs··on I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great
My Dad managed to install linux (Q4OS) on his computer in a dual-boot setup, having never even touched Linux before. He hasn't asked me for help once, whereas historically I've been his tech support when he was running Windows. He's loving the linux experience.

I believe if my Dad is able to install, use and benefit from Linux, anyone can.
