barbequeer··on Collapse OS
this line got me:

> under what conditions do you believe the civilization you're living under will collapse? [...] Oh, you just haven't made that list yet? [...] Or you could take the question from the other side and list the conditions that are necessary for your civilization to continue to exist. That's an interesting list too.

I've always dismissed collapse talk as "batshit crazy" as the author says. but he raises good points here. maybe I'm not batshit crazy enough.

barbequeer··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
if there's one thing we can be sure of with the current administration, it's that regulatory hurdles aren't going to stop them doing what they want
barbequeer··on You need 4 colors
105 comments and counting. I think this page was maybe an attempt to troll opinionated HN people
barbequeer··on The sham legacy of Richard Feynman [video]
I had so many recommendations for "Surely you're joking Mr Feynman" that I had to read it. I gave up halfway through. It seemed awfully self-serving.
barbequeer··on Electrobun: Cross-platform desktop applications written in TypeScript
I love to see projects like this, the more alternatives we have for creating cross-platform apps, the better.
barbequeer··on Boeing overcharged the U.S. Air Force 8,000% above market for soap dispensers
Yes, but this is for soap.
barbequeer··on Boeing overcharged the U.S. Air Force 8,000% above market for soap dispensers
> How much does the soap dispenser cost in a 777 bathroom

This might not be a fair comparison, since Boeing also makes the ones for commercial customers, and probably overcharges them also.

> This one from CB2 is $40 and it doesn't conform to FAA rules and it's not MIL-SPEC.

People talk about MIL-SPEC like its some unattainable gold-standard. I can buy a MIL-SPEC rated Thinkpad from Lenovo for less than $600. I mean, sure, it doesn't dispense soap...

barbequeer··on Peak population may be coming sooner than we think
Do you think this is a bad thing?
barbequeer··on Desktop icons are surprisingly hard
I chipped my tooth on one just last wednesday

> Fast, performant and cheap. You wanted all 3? Now you got it!

Fast, Good, and Cheap. Performant is just a synonym for fast. Is it any good?

Also call me a miser, but $499 is not "cheap". I recently bought a new Nokia G42 with the same camera and storage for <€150

barbequeer··on At least 20 dead as walkie-talkies explode in Lebanon
> ...meanwhile Putin is basically trying to make a whole country freeze this year and I don't hear anyone complain.

You haven't heard anyone complain about Russia invading Ukraine?

Looks like a very useful app for your own use cases, and I'm sure people will find it very helpful. Well done!

I think its a stretch to say it will "replace all AI apps". It's like saying a GUI for FFMPEG would replace all those one-click video conversion sites. There's always going to be a market for people who want the simplest way possible to do something - people who barely even know what ChatGPT is, let alone have an API-key

barbequeer··on Ask HN: How do you organise photos?
I also was a Picasa lover! you can still find v3.9 for download but no active development. I don't understand why someone hasn't stepped up with an alternative in the 8 years since it was canned.
barbequeer··on Ask HN: How do you organise photos?
I have three HDDs with clones of the same folder structure, but I'd love to add another media type to that, maybe optical
barbequeer··on Ask HN: Did you encounter any leap year bugs today?
I don't know if it was a Leap year bug but after midnight my wife's phone still said Feb 29th even though it should have switched over to March 30th at 00:01
