barbazoo··on Lotus Notes and the dangers of starting from scratch
I don't have many memories of my father but one thing I very vaguely remember is the quirky way it would scramble each character when he entered his password in Lotus Notes.
barbazoo··on Aging brains blend memories together instead of just forgetting them
I feel for you. Even though it's entertaining to read, that must be really hard to go through for you.
barbazoo··on American Airlines mechanic Azriel “Al” Blackman has died
Right! Maybe the longer into the future the older the kid is. It's hard to predict past 1s sometimes what my toddler is going to do. The older one, I'd bet on the outcome within a couple seconds.
barbazoo··on Introducing Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS
> Surely the creator is getting some value from YouTube and YT expects to be compensated for that?

I'd imagine Google would start charging for videos that don't make enough money or heavily deprioritize them from discovery. That seems like a problem they could solve if they wanted to.

barbazoo··on Introducing Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS
It doesn't have to go through Google. Lots of us support the people they follow through patreon et al, I don't need to make the gigacorp even richer than it is. They have enough.

> I don't think you can learn how to work in a machine shop safely from a book. Or recognize when a complex design is heading towards being unworkable.

This strikes me as something one learns very slowly over time. Safety takes time to internalize after close calls or seeing people get hurt. Same with complexity, it takes going through project after project to get a gut feeling for what works and what doesn't.

barbazoo··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
I'm still using Arc, I wonder when I'll lose UBO support. That'll be the day I switch back to Firefox.
barbazoo··on Claude Session URL appended to commit messages and PR descriptions by default
One of many signals. Using AI efficiently is all about leaving breadcrumbs everywhere.
barbazoo··on Claude Session URL appended to commit messages and PR descriptions by default
Same here, cool, now Claude can grab the context from the session to reason better about why things are the way they are.

Maybe an ID alone would have been better, not a whole http url.

barbazoo··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
Including executives that still refuse to price in the environmental externalities of their business practices.
barbazoo··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
> because .. inevitably .. this super dry summer means there will be heavier rains in October

What's the process here for that region? I don't think the moisture is waiting anywhere.

barbazoo··on Flock CEO's Address Spread Online as Surveillance Backlash Explodes
I would imagine that the worst thing the vast majority of people have done is probably orders of magnitude less bad than what this guy has enabled and profited from. So it'd probably be safe under that regime.
barbazoo··on Meta reaches $16.68B settlement over social media harms to children
Strawman, no one said anything about shutting down the company.

Even without the government telling them, they shouldn't be damaging children.

barbazoo··on Hacker News now has an active (official) X account
> Hello again, world!

Has that kinda vibe.

barbazoo··on I were 17, I'd learn how to build LLMs from scratch
> Someone asked what I'd do if I were 17. I'd learn how to build LLMs from scratch, and then train ones as powerful as I could with whatever hardware I could get access to.

He's seeing a future for models running on everyday hardware just capable enough to do what the use case requires.

barbazoo··on Hook, hold, harvest and hide: Meta's alleged strategy laid out in first week
There is this recent example https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/aug/20/evergrande-...
barbazoo··on Hook, hold, harvest and hide: Meta's alleged strategy laid out in first week
One thing China does well. Put people that damage their society or economy behind bars.
barbazoo··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
That plus the 20% or so that don't care enough to vote.
barbazoo··on WPD won't replace stolen Flock cameras, citing public trust
OP made the mistake and included ALPRs in their list IMO. Because I'm having a hard time imagining how a sensor triggered red light camera could be used for oppression.
barbazoo··on WPD won't replace stolen Flock cameras, citing public trust
Personally I have nothing against municipally operated red light/speed camera system because those are triggered by a sensor rather than continuous so privacy is less of an issue.
barbazoo··on Field measurements of neighborhood-scale air temperature impacts of data centers
It's possible to avoid interacting with AI in every day life but it's impossible not to be affected by second order effects. The impact from a data center boom fuelled by dirty electricity is real.
barbazoo··on Show HN: 1667, a terminal UI for writing fiction with language models
Agree, the application of LLM often feels too literal. I like when LLM inform the UX but a layer or two removed for example like you said by giving feedback on things produced by the user or combining multiple things that happened over time and acting on that. That's where the magic lies and where I see users actually be happy having AI in their workflow.
barbazoo··on Why tech bosses keep sharing their manifestos about AI
What about a dog?
barbazoo··on Why tech bosses keep sharing their manifestos about AI
> And the average person has demand for meaningfully more. I think it's, like, 15

Research seems to point at more like 3-5 https://www.socialconnectionguidelines.org/en/evidence-brief...

barbazoo··on GLM-5.3: Frontier coding with emergent cyber capabilities
So is the quantitative difference in token use the only difference or do you think there's also a different qualitat? I'm on CC only and immensely happy. Very productive both at work and privately and at work I average around $250 a month which probably means nothing but it's little compared to my salary.

Is that the main concern though, cost?

barbazoo··on German advocacy group lodges criminal complaint over Meta AI glasses
I imagine Meta and folks wearing these glasses would object to webcam like behavior where it tells you with a LED that it's consuming the video feed. Could be same for taking a picture.

But then probably fewer people would buy them.

barbazoo··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
We always talk about damage, what's the damage here?
barbazoo··on Kinney Drugs pulls back AI phone assistant after hundreds of customer complaints
Make it so the parts that are done by AI are rock solid, until then, they shouldn't be near a customer and be done by humans. Resist the greed!
barbazoo··on Kinney Drugs pulls back AI phone assistant after hundreds of customer complaints
I just don't get why we're not doing it vertically like you said here. Implement a part of the cognitive work using AI but let the hard parts be done by a person. They're still gonna be more rich, just less so.
barbazoo··on Mea Culpa – Dark Hours
It's fine to build these apps that are clones of other's in my opinion but don't start publishing it for fame or fortune. Be humble, the computer did pretty much all of the work for you.
