barbacoa··on Reopening Texas Had No Discernible Impact on Covid-19 Cases or Deaths
It's too late. The genie is out of the bottle. The moment the virus escaped Wuhan there was/is no stopping it. You'll never get a coordinated world wide lockdown sufficient to stop all infection. And being a strain of flu it will likely coevolve with any vaccine we throw at it. Local strains are already showing resistance against various vaccines. There was even a covid-19 breakout amongst the Yankees team even though they were all vaccinated.
barbacoa··on Reopening Texas Had No Discernible Impact on Covid-19 Cases or Deaths
Did all that prevent infection or simply spread out the infection propagation from a few weeks to 1.5 years?
barbacoa··on Woke at Work: Why tech firms are trying to run away from politics and failing
Majority of the Jewish immigrants after the creation of Israel were ethnic Arab Jews that were expelled from their Islamic Arab countries. This conflict go back much more than 100 years.
barbacoa··on Texas gov knew of natural gas shortages days before blackout, blamed wind anyway
ERCOT has the ability to share power with Eastern grid and Mexican grid. This is done through high voltage DC interconnects so they do not need to sync the AC transmission. That is why they are still considered separate grids.
barbacoa··on Texas gov knew of natural gas shortages days before blackout, blamed wind anyway
Because those grids were strained by the winter storm too.
barbacoa··on Texas gov knew of natural gas shortages days before blackout, blamed wind anyway
"Wind turbines were a factor, but only a small one. Wind in Texas doesn’t produce as much power in the winter, and regulators don’t typically rely on wind turbines to provide significant amounts of power. Instead, regulators anticipated that natural gas and coal power plants would meet demand."

This is a key paragraph that the author waves over without elaboration. Wind power makes up 25% of the power grid. When winter storm hit wind production collapsed and the load all shifted to natural gas which couldn't sustain the load.

Here is a thought experiment, if that 25% of the grid had been coal power plants instead of wind would the grid have still failed?

barbacoa··on Opposition to net neutrality was faked, New York says
>The propaganda framed it like sites like Netflix would be really fast because they could afford to pay for it and startup competitors would be very slow.

The irony is that this is how Netflix already operates. They sign direct interconnect agreements with ISPs to host their servers directly at local ISP network distribution hubs. They have a competitive advantage that is literally built in to the internet infrastructure.

barbacoa··on Facebook's Trump ban upheld by Oversight Board, for now
From my recollection, twitter blocked NYP from posting until they took down a post with the link to their laptop article, which NYP refused to do.
barbacoa··on Facebook's Trump ban upheld by Oversight Board, for now
Is it unconstitutional for the government to tell tobacco companies they can't advertise to children?

There are laws that the phone company can't discriminate who can use their service. Is that unconstitutional too?

People have had very broad interpretations for what constitutes corporate first amendment protections recently.

barbacoa··on Do You Live in a Political Bubble?
I feel it's becoming more in line with a religion at this point, how else can you explain such large groups of people having near indistinguishable views on unrelated and complex topics. Knowing someone's view on Keystone XL pipeline shouldn't allow you to extrapolate what their views on gun control or healthcare are.

I'm curious if this is what the Catholic-Protestant rift felt like.

barbacoa··on Florida bill to fine social media for banning politicians
SCOTUS has ruled on a case very close to this and it held up.

barbacoa··on Disney gets special “theme park” exception to Florida’s anti-tech bill
>Not that this has any chance of being upheld, of course.

The author of that article seems to not have a very deep understanding of court precedent. I wouldn't count it out as unconstitutional so quickly.

https://reason.com/2021/02/04/florida-gov-ron-desantis-wants...

"In a 1980 decision, Pruneyard Shopping Center v. Robins, the Supreme Court ruled that California could mandate that Pruneyard allow protesters to engage in political advocacy there, even though it was private property. The mall wasn't being ordered to host particular messages, but rather serve as a carrier of a type of communication, which was political petitioning in this case."

The companies would fall under Florida jurisdiction if they have any presence in the state like data centers.
barbacoa··on Why American construction costs are so high (2019)
In New York City unions are essentially a subsidiary of the political system, funneling money into reelection champagnes. In return politicians return their support by requiring that any government contract must be awarded to contractors that use union labor. It is all a racket. I have heard stories from people who have done civil work in NYC and the level of corruption and waste is staggering. Like $5000 billed labor hours to drive to a site to plug in a cable. Firms will bit a 50% surcharge on any projects in NYC to compensate with the red tape and union labor costs.

That is because they never gained power and the nazis murdered/imprisoned most of them after they won the election of 1933. Unfortunately it turned out the medicine wasn't any better than the disease.

If you want to read about what the Communists had in plan for German you can read about the horrors they did in Russia. The Gulag Archipelago has been highly recommend.

barbacoa··on The culture war is killing us [video]
The political "other side" in Germany in 1930s was the German Communist Party. Not "free health care" communists more like gulags and firing squads communists.

Not much better.

>supporting black activists automatically pits you against white working class folk

That does seem to be the perception.

One of the core ideas of BLM is that we live in a systematic racist society. If that is true who are the perpetrators?

I had 19¢ in a bank account I that sat dormant for 4 year. Still there when I logged in and started using the account again.
barbacoa··on The culture war is killing us [video]
There have been countless corporations that are openly supporting BLM and pushing the "everything is about race" narrative because it is a distraction from the increasing wealth inequality that has led to rising economic popularism, which has in the past helped candidates like donald trump or bernie sanders who the powers-to-be want to keep out of office.
barbacoa··on The culture war is killing us [video]
It the same issue but with a slight of hand to shift blame.

There is a sentiment that at a macro level the economic system is geared to advantage those at the top.

What I see mega corps are doing now is try to shift that frustration from a discussion of class to a discussion of race.

Suddenly the white working class outside of major economic centers, the same ones who have seen their economic prospects erode over a generation due to deindustrialization can be painted as the villain and racists.

barbacoa··on Daily Mail owner sues Google over search results
That is an interesting observation. I can confirm I get those results too. Perhaps they are relaxing their algorithms now that elections are over. I originally tried this month (or maybe a few) ago and was unable to get any link to breitbart.com even if I googled entire paragraphs.

Ironically, DM did enough journalistic leg work that they managed to get their hands on a copy of Hunter Biden's hard drive and had "forensic expert" examine it. Something the rest of the "reputable" media couldn't do.

barbacoa··on Daily Mail owner sues Google over search results
We live in a world of subjective truths. "Hunter Biden laptop is fake" is to the left what "wide spread voter fraud" is to the right. People are too emotionally invested to have adult conversation on these topics.
barbacoa··on Daily Mail owner sues Google over search results
If you ever want to play censorship scavenger hunt, try to get Google to link to breitbart.com without including the word breitbart. You can search article titles word for word in quotes and the names of the authors but google will not return a single breitbart.com link.
barbacoa··on Proposed bill to ban US government from buying location data [pdf]
>Unfortunately many are fine with this because they believe it benefits their ideological group, which is more important than individual rights.

Sadly true.

A good example from this year:

>...the FBI relied in some cases on emergency orders that do not require court authorization in order to quickly secure actual communications from people...

I remember back in the day when this would outrage people.
