barbacoa··on Europe Is Under Siege
Many Americans see Europe's DSA as a framework to allow the implemention of China style state censorship system.
barbacoa··on The healthcare market is taxing reproduction out of existence
Car depend infrastructure is amazing to families. A mom can take her children to the grocery store in a car in relative safety without worrying about mentally ill homeless people on the subway.
barbacoa··on 'Stone-cold killers': New Zealand to eradicate feral cats by 2050
Back when CRISPER was the new hot thing in science people talked about engineering invasive species to have gene drives such that they could only produce male offspring. Eventually there would be no females and the population would disappear.

Doesn't look like it ever got of the ground though.

barbacoa··on Grokipedia and the coup against reality
Apparently Grokipedia give you the option to highlight that section of the text and click "this is wrong" and it will update the text or tell you why not. I don't have a account but someone should try and report back what it does.
barbacoa··on Grokipedia and the coup against reality
Some interesting comparisons I found between Wikipedia and grok. These are the intro paragraphs.

Grokipedia:

The Biden–Ukraine controversy pertains to allegations that U.S. Vice President Joe Biden conditioned $1 billion in loan guarantees on the Ukrainian government's dismissal of Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin in March 2016, purportedly to obstruct an ongoing investigation into Burisma Holdings, the Ukrainian energy firm where Biden's son, Robert Hunter Biden, served as a board member receiving substantial compensation since May 2014.[1][2] Shokin, whose office had pursued corruption charges against Burisma's founder Mykola Zlochevsky—including probes into illicit asset acquisition and bribery—publicly stated that his removal derailed these efforts, coinciding with Hunter Biden's role amid the company's efforts to mitigate regulatory pressures.[2][3]

Wikipedia:

The Biden–Ukraine conspiracy theory is a series of false allegations that Joe Biden, while he was vice president of the United States, improperly withheld a loan guarantee and took a bribe to pressure Ukraine into firing prosecutor general Viktor Shokin to prevent a corruption investigation of Ukrainian gas company Burisma and to protect his son Hunter Biden, who was on the Burisma board.[1] As part of efforts by Donald Trump[2] and his campaign in the Trump–Ukraine scandal, which led to Trump's first impeachment, these falsehoods were spread in an attempt to damage Joe Biden's reputation and chances during the 2020 presidential campaign, and later in an effort to impeach him.[3]

Grokipedia:

Gamergate was a grassroots online movement that emerged in August 2014, primarily focused on exposing conflicts of interest and lack of transparency in video game journalism, initiated by a blog post detailing the romantic involvement of indie developer Zoë Quinn with journalists who covered her work without disclosure.[1] The controversy began when Eron Gjoni, Quinn's ex-boyfriend, published "The Zoe Post," accusing her of infidelity with multiple individuals, including Kotaku journalist Nathan Grayson, whose article on Quinn's game Depression Quest omitted any mention of their prior personal contact.[2] This revelation highlighted broader patterns of undisclosed relationships and coordinated industry practices, such as private mailing lists among journalists, fueling demands for ethical reforms like mandatory disclosure policies.

Wikipedia:

Gamergate or GamerGate (GG)[1] was a loosely organized misogynistic online harassment campaign motivated by a right-wing backlash against feminism, diversity, and progressivism in video game culture.[2][3][4] It was conducted using the hashtag "#Gamergate" primarily in 2014 and 2015.[a] Gamergate targeted women in the video game industry, most notably feminist media critic Anita Sarkeesian and video game developers Zoë Quinn and Brianna Wu.[b]

Google went so far as to scan people's private google drives for copies of the documentary 'plandemic' and delete them.

Trump appointing RFK due to popular demand from his base even though Trump previously never expressed any of those views.
barbacoa··on Texas law gives grid operator power to disconnect data centers during crisis
Texas is connected to the Eastern and Mexican grids and can share power through high voltage DC interconnect stations. They simply don't sync to the phase of other grids.

It's not fair to compare 1 GW of solar to 1 GW of nuclear power.

A solar plant will produce at full capacity an equivalent of ~5 hours a day.

Nuclear will produce at full capacity for 24/7/365.

barbacoa··on The Supreme Court is about to decide the future of online speech
>I'd say where the protection starts is that the board is yours. You can make it as open or restricted or curated or nonsensical as you wish. Other individuals can put up their own boards and they can display whatever they wish.

As mentioned in the article, Pruneyard Shopping Center v. Robins ruling rejected that logic. The government can regulate your conduct. The speech in your bulletin board is that of those who wrote it, not your's. Thus not 1A issue.

The underlying issue is if social media is a platform (like a bulletin board) or a publisher (like a newspaper).

barbacoa··on The Supreme Court is about to decide the future of online speech
If the States win this case, it will be amusing to watch social media sites try to comply with laws banning political censorship in USA also complying with laws in EU mandating political censorship.
barbacoa··on Google to pause Gemini image generation of people after issues
It's as if Google believes their higher principle is something other than serving customers and making money. They haven't been able to push out a new successful product in 10+ years. This doesn't bode well for them in the future.

I blame that decade of near zero interest rates. Companies could post record profits without working for them. I think in the coming years we will discover that that event functionally broke many companies.

Russia/Ukraine war is still raging. Congress fighting for a 9th $100B aid package.
barbacoa··on As much as you ever wanted to know about 155M artillery shell production
This comment is peak 2004 neo-conservatives logic.

Ukraine is fighting a bloody attrition land war in Russia. They are currently losing and will likely fair worse as time goes on.

Mind you Ukraine could have prevented all of this if they had decided not to break the Minsk agreement which would have ended the conflict in Donbas. Instead the US and EU used it to buy for time so they could further arm Ukraine for war with Russia.

This conflict has been an unmitigated disaster for the people of Ukraine. Entire generation of youth killed or crippled. Millions fled the country and may never return.

barbacoa··on US agency will not reinstate $900M subsidy for Starlink
The reason individual speeds were trending down is because the number of users is increasing. Now that the service no longer has wait-lists and is fully available to everyone, one would imagine speeds increasing as more infrastructure is brought online.

barbacoa··on Starship will attempt a launch this Friday
Back story as explained by Elon in an interview with Lex Friedman:

The government's environmental assessment was bonkers. They were required to do things like assess the risk of a booster landing on a shark or whale in the middle of the ocean. They were also required to assess if the sound of the rocket would harm the breeding behavior of the seal population. To do this they had to chase down a seal, strap it down to a board with headphones and study if the sound of rocket engine were emotionally distressing to the animal.

barbacoa··on The Pentagon and CIA have shaped thousands of movies into effective propaganda

One would expect more deaths in the placebo group from all the people who died of covid. Which makes the data even more striking.

barbacoa··on The Pentagon and CIA have shaped thousands of movies into effective propaganda
What's even more alarming is that this increases in all-cause deaths were present in the vaccine clinical study data. The vaccine group had fewer covid deaths but had significantly more overall deaths that the non vaccine control group.
barbacoa··on We need scientific dissidents
https://www.city-journal.org/article/approximately-zero

I suspect this is the study being mentioned.

Keep in mind this is at slowing population level spread. On an individual level masking may be different.

The idea is that covid is so contagious in unexposed population that any precautions against spread are futile.

barbacoa··on More Than 40% of Japanese Women May Never Have Children
>couple in our late 30s who decided not to have kids

I fear for people who choose this path. Being childless in your 30s sounds like a blast. But that's just one stage of your life. How fun is life going to be when you're 40+? Or when your health begins to decline? Maybe it will be worth it, maybe not. When I visit older relatives who are childless (at least to me) their lives come off as hollow and sad.

barbacoa··on Sex-specific differences in myocardial injury after Covid-19 Vaccination
>Even if there's a tiny increase in inflammation (which is doubtful: if this were real it would have been caught during clinical trials

I'm reminded here of what happened with Vioxx. When the clinical studies showed a dangerous increased risk of heart attacks, Merck simply falsified their data to remove those data points. It's estimated that 10000s of people died as a result of taking the drug. Some estimates even top 100000 deaths in the USA alone.

Also it wasn't exactly a tiny increase, the study puts the figure at 2.8% or 1 in 35 people had myocardial injury.

barbacoa··on The Owner of San Francisco’s Largest Hotel Is Just Walking Away
>Southern US's attitude to the federal government.

People associate the US South with being poor. And it's true in that they get more federal dollars then pay, mostly from welfare. However the poverty rate in California beats out out every other state in the country.

If California keeps on its trend how long until jokes once about Mississippi or Alabama will instead have California as the punch line?

barbacoa··on A decade on, Edward Snowden remains in Russia, though U.S. laws have changed
>In 2015, Congress rewrote the law that allowed the NSA to scoop up everyone's records. The U.S.A. Freedom Act now prohibits the bulk collection of phone records by American citizens.

Leave it to NPR to run interference for the government. The Freedom Act reformed the reauthorization of the Patriot act. At least on paper. NSA's PRISM project that Snowden revealed was authorized under section 702 of the 2008 FISA Amendment. This law has not been changed.
