banana_smoothie··on Sealed Rust Update
From the previous blog post ("Part 1: The Pitch"[1]):

> We hope that the Sealed Rust effort would be applicable to any developers working in safety critical software domains, such as:

> Automotive (under safety standard ISO26262)

> Industrial (under safety standard IEC61508)

> Robotics (under a number of safety standards deriving from IEC61508)

> Medical Devices (under safety standard IEC62304)

> Avionics (under safety standard DO-178)

banana_smoothie··on Court rules that people can't be locked up indefinitely for refusing to decrypt
While true, this is also a much more modern problem than the authors of the US constitution were subject to.

If you stab people, you can wipe the blood off the knife. If you shoot someone, there was not a way to associate a projectile with a firearm. (Assuming the dubious merits of "firearm forensics".) Back in the good ol' 1780s, there's no presecutorial evidence to be gained by inspecting my safe because you cannot show that the knife/gun inside was the murder weapon.

banana_smoothie··on Hallucinogenic Fish
It's not especially relevant to this link, but I think this conversation needs a voice in favor of these "hallucinogenic" fish. All fish are living beings who should not be subject to exploitation for your personal benefit.
banana_smoothie··on Make CPython segfault in 5 lines of code
> such as (1/0).foo.foo (and yes you need the second .foo…)

I don't understand the nuance here. In my Firefox developer tools, I can do the following:

> (1/0).foo.foo

---> TypeError: (intermediate value).foo is undefined

> (1/0).foo

---> undefined

> (1/1).foo.foo

---> TypeError: 1.foo is undefined

> Infinity.foo.foo

---> TypeError: Infinity.foo is undefined

> undefined.foo

---> TypeError: undefined has no properties

While these are all different errors, I don't really understand why the '(1/0).foo.foo' case is an example of a _trapped_ error, but the others are not.

Thanks!
banana_smoothie··on TPM–Fail: TPM Meets Timing and Lattice Attacks
The link to the paper[1] is a 404. Did anyone manage to grab a copy of the paper? I haven't thought about lattices since gradschool crypto classes, and was excited to see if I could comprehend anything after 10 years. :(

banana_smoothie··on An unpaid UK researcher saved the Japanese seaweed industry (2017)
Correct! Seaweed is a complex algae. Although much less common, seagrasses are true plants (which evolved from terrestrial plants like 100 million years ago). I can't think of any other submerged marine plants, and some limited google searches are only giving me mangrove forests as additional marine plants.
banana_smoothie··on Urban trees 'live fast, die young' compared to those in rural forests
> I don't know at what elevation trees stop appearing

This is known as the "tree line", and varies a lot based on particular location (due to sun exposure, climate, and plant species). Here's a wikipedia article which outlines where the tree line: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_line . Summary is that the treeline is rarely above 12k feet (3500m), though in Bolivia it gets all the way up to 17k feet (5200m)!!

You are probably correct w.r.t. the main flow of the jet stream being far in excess of the highest tree lines in the world. The jet stream's main flow is usually 30k feet (10k meters) or higher.
