bamboleo··on The growing peril of war with China over Taiwan
It appears to me that we’re back into imperialism before the end of the century. Who will stop China if they want to expand? Nobody stopped Russia a few years ago. Hong Kong got fucked this year and nobody did anything.

China could expand into Kashmir and definitively “own” the South China Sea, including Taiwan.

Who will go to war with China? No one.

bamboleo··on How to Favicon in 2021: Six files that fit most needs
Unless you have a PWA, you only need a /favicon.ico and the touch PNG icon. The browser will fetch them automatically, no tags required.

Tip: the ico can just be a renamed PNG file.

I wish people stopped cluttering their sites with a thousand useless variations.

The SVG favicon part is interesting and maybe that requires the 2 rel=icon tags.

bamboleo··on Baremetrics required a phone call to cancel
It’s a matter of principle. Plus I don’t want to be forced to hear them beg to stay.

You know I want to leave, let me leave and stop being abusive.

bamboleo··on Baremetrics required a phone call to cancel
My European country used to do that with phone contracts as well, then it was outlawed.

Now some of them will just make you pay a penalty if you recede early, but you can still cancel at anytime.

bamboleo··on Baremetrics required a phone call to cancel
He sent an email, he has a response denying the request. Why would that not be enough? The company here is at fault for outright refusing a written request.
bamboleo··on Baremetrics required a phone call to cancel
Lest anyone point this guy to that site listing a bunch of other dark patterns, he might take inspiration.
bamboleo··on Show HN: A TO-DO app that fits inside a single tweet
JS is ok, it’s the DOM APIs that are verbose. I mean this is just to handle the enter key:

    f.addEventListener('keypress',e=>{if(e.keyCode==000) etc()})
bamboleo··on The web is 30 years old today
Why “3 or 4 years ago”? HTML5 video has been around since at least 2007 and has been virtually unchanged since (except new formats and DRM)
bamboleo··on Streaming Is Stalling: Can Music Keep Up in the Attention Economy?
Classic "old man yells at cloud."

Nobody is stopping you from picking an album and setting it on repeat. Everything you could do before, you can still do, just without heading out nor opening your wallet.

The only thing that concerns me about streaming is that music might disappear in the future. Everything else is just your own nostalgia, I don't miss having to listen to my father's tapes on repeat.

bamboleo··on Show HN: I have found the world's greatest landing page
Same. That’s why I don’t use my main browser when showing it to others. Chrome has multiple profiles for a reason.

If I had to screenshare regularly I’d definitely have a whole dedicated OS profile.

bamboleo··on Conditional JavaScript: Only download when it is appropriate
To be honest I don’t disagree with you. I really wish content was served raw with an optional interface, but the consumer isn’t willing to pay for that.
bamboleo··on GWSL: Run graphical Linux apps in WSL
What do you like that’s not available elsewhere? I only know about Excel being irreplaceable for some.
bamboleo··on Conditional JavaScript: Only download when it is appropriate
All you need is 30kb unminified; All I need might be a considerable amount of texture and code to run a 3D game.

Just because you only visit Hacker News it doesn’t mean that every website can do its job with an equivalent amount of JS.

The whole point of such APIs is to automatically provide the right content to people: Lightweight on slow connections, beautiful on the rest of them.

bamboleo··on Conditional JavaScript: Only download when it is appropriate
This is rather low-level and needs to be hardcoded by developers. It doesn’t scale.

What we need is ways to mark content as optional or offering it in multiple levels, that the navigator can pick from. This would be similar to how videos are served.

I also want to point out the Save-Data header which is a step in the right direction.

bamboleo··on Cloudflare Pages: the best way to build JAMstack websites
It’s a bad day for Netlify. I had issues with them before and I’m already fronting some sites with CloudFlare, so… I guess I know what I’m doing next week.
bamboleo··on Tech Preview of Docker Desktop for M1
You keep going, I’ll take another door.

I know enough Docker to create and launch a dev environment, but I don’t need anything more than that since I don’t do deployments.

Likewise you don’t need to learn about browser rendering since you barely interact with it.

bamboleo··on Tech Preview of Docker Desktop for M1
Probably because it’s not very convenient or easy to setup. I have a 2013 i7 MacBook Pro and I don’t have that much trouble running Docker with 16GB of RAM.
bamboleo··on Europe's night trains are on track for a resurgence
How little would it have to cost or how long would your vacation have to be to compete with a simple rental? Sometimes you can rent for $15/30 a day and I don’t think transporting a whole car would be particularly cheap, given the price of a train ticket in the US.
bamboleo··on Hackers hide web skimmer inside a website's CSS
No it cannot. That method misses repeating characters, which makes it pretty useless unless your password is otherwise guessable. Also you have to hope that the order is right.

For credit card numbers that means that you’ll miss at least 4 digits and you won’t know their position among 16. I’m not gonna do the math but that’s a few times more than 10000 guesses necessary to find the final number.

bamboleo··on Reddit is buying TikTok rival Dubsmash
I can believe the latter.
bamboleo··on Reddit is buying TikTok rival Dubsmash
I hope the opposite. I haven’t installed Reddit’s app and never will. That only means that my engagement will drop (like it already happens when they want me to log in when opening a subreddit)

One can only hope.

bamboleo··on Reddit is buying TikTok rival Dubsmash
I don’t know why v.reddit doesn’t work, all I know is that if I get the hls address and stick it in a video tag, it’s pretty reliable.

This likely means that they’re doing something so badly that they break something that already works. Good job.

bamboleo··on Hackers hide web skimmer inside a website's CSS
That’s what I thought this method was. Repeating characters would kill that method since you don’t know which character was repeated and, more importantly, where. Even in the best situation you have to guess 4 digits and their positions 1 through 16. That sounds like a lot of guessing.
bamboleo··on Hackers hide web skimmer inside a website's CSS
People are missing the point of the story (and the title doesn’t help)

CSS here is only used to hide the URL from security checkers, but a JavaScript part is still needed.

CSS alone can’t run scripts nor send the content of an input field.

bamboleo··on Amazon owns more than $2B worth of IPv4 addresses
Sadly this means that the poorer countries give the same IP to multiple users. I’ve received a “you’re doing that too much” error after the first google search of the day on my phone in South East Asia. I don’t remember which country
bamboleo··on Poll: Will you take the Covid vaccine?
Dead people and newborns also should not take the vaccine. What’s your point?

The poll’s intent is to understand why one would not want to take it, not whether they should. The government already makes that choice for you. See “People with allergies should avoid the vaccine.”

bamboleo··on Poll: Will you take the Covid vaccine?
ITT: people who leave comments without reading past the title.
bamboleo··on Cloudflare’s privacy-first Web Analytics is now available for everyone
Not a single mention of GDPR on the launch of a “privacy-focused” analytics.

I’m disappointed.

I just need an analytics solution that somewhat guarantees I do or don’t need to use a cookie banner.

I need to know how many people visit my website without bothering them with annoying popups.

bamboleo··on Houdini.how
Yes. Houdini lets you paint a layer via JavaScript. The only link with CSS is that you call the Houdini module from CSS and pass some properties.
bamboleo··on CSS in GitHub Readmes
It’s not a privacy issue because GitHub proxies and caches the images probably since 2016
