ballooney··on Due to blade damage, Mars Helicopter Ingenuity will not fly again
Infact, NASA wouldn’t use that sort of SOC for anything critical like the rover itself. Ingenuity was always a marginal experiment with a correspondingly high appetite for risk and ability to accept budgetary compromises.
ballooney··on Show HN: I made a website to find best bus seat to avoid the sun while traveling
Both sides are pretty good for being well shaded from the sun, in the Channel Tunnel, in my experience.
ballooney··on [dead]
Given 100% of my exposure to this person is from reading this blog post just now, I'm not sure I'd invite him to my bookshop either. Luckily this is immaterial, because I don't have a bookshop.
ballooney··on The perils and pleasures of bartending in Antarctica (2017)
I am with you, for what it’s worth. I would be tending the bar and frowning at anyone who asked for “gin and tonics” until they corrected themselves.
ballooney··on Apple loses one of the last remaining designers from Jony Ive era
I will take your word for it seeing as you are/were on first name terms with them both, suggesting this is all first-hand knowledge.
ballooney··on The British Library URL has been offline due to cyberattack for 10 days
no!
ballooney··on Breakthrough in 'detonating' hypersonic propulsion
This is an air breathing rde, you have likely seen rdes with seperate oxidiser injection, more like a rocket engine.
ballooney··on California suspends Cruise's autonomous vehicle deployment
To be clear and dispel your misconception:

These cars estimate rather than ‘know’.

ballooney··on Eric 'Winkle" Brown – His Best and Worst Aircraft [video]
I'm not sure what prior lead you to conclude it's 'highly' likely that he never flew any of those - he flew all three!
ballooney··on Engineering Team Lessons from Cycling
I mean you could make up the same handwavey platitudes from anything really. Fruit Pickers. A Hospital Ward. Ant Colonies.
ballooney··on Julia and Mojo Mandelbrot Benchmark
I only see one of those among 32 constructive ones - a rather better ratio than this site!
ballooney··on Airbnb rental revenues have plunged in some parts of the US, this chart suggests
It's a USA thing.
ballooney··on Open source licenses need to leave the 1980s and evolve to deal with AI
Extracting information from data [that you assume contains redundancy] is _precisely_ what compression is.
ballooney··on Time to end the speed limit in US airspace?
Yes it is.

(London-LA semi-frequent flyer).

ballooney··on An ancient Persian way to keep cool (2021)
You absolutely would expect that, any old national myth can be co-opted for whatever current political cause seems fit.
ballooney··on Overhyping hydrogen as a fuel
No it isn't the solution. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunkelflaute

You need something else for those hours/days/week(s).

ballooney··on Europe's Software Problem
It’s not really technology though now is it. They’re pushing the boundaries of capitalism and morality but not technology. It’s been ages since Silicon Valley was about silicon. Almost all the current energy of the valley is in surveillance/ad-tech. Maybe the odd rocket as a fig-leaf.
ballooney··on Ask HN: Those who quit their jobs to travel the world, how did it go?
I have spent probably about a year in total in india over various trips, cities and rurally a bit of cycling though usually just for getting around locally. It’s much easier outside big cities, wrt traffic. It seems a bit easier in the south, too. I’ve never felt remotely worried about crime from a personal safety POV, but having something lifted from you on a sleeper train is not that unlikely (those steel-cable net bag things you can padlock to something to contain your bag are handy). It was never an issue in homesteads, and getting your washing done regardless of how sketchy a place you think you’re staying always just seems to work - you always get your clothes back and never anyone else’s. A bit like takuhaibin in Japan - accept it’s magic and just relax and enjoy yourself more.
ballooney··on How satellite ‘megaconstellations’ will photobomb astronomy images
This should be the top comment. It’s an especially prevalent view in the USA that bad politics is a law of physics and the only solutions are madly technological. It’s not true as many other parts of the world prove. You can just have a not-insane ISP/telco regulatory system if you so choose. (see also healthcare, food/agricultural standards, water quality, online privacy... all choices).
ballooney··on Let’s implement a Bloom Filter
I like hand drawn diagrams and use them a lot, especially since work gave me an ipad, but whenever I see them in ‘high-production-value’, well researched and edited blog posts like this, I am reminded that it still seems to be a hard problem to quickly produce good quality vector diagrams (with foss software).

Has the state of the art moved on recently, or is it still a case of fighting TikZ?

ballooney··on Airbus to build 'first interplanetary cargo ship'
I've been on this website long enough to remember when everyone was saying 'of course manually-driven cars will be the exception by 2020', and believing Elon Musk's timescales has taken over as the new naive credulity of the HNer.
ballooney··on Chipmaker Analog Devices to acquire Maxim Integrated for $21B
‘Bought’ one of. I’m still bitter about TI buying BB tbh.

ballooney··on Numerical Linear Algebra for Programmers
But that course is the very basics that you need before you can start doing applications. Just like you have to learn a bit of vocab and grammar before you can start conversing in a foreign language. Once you’ve done that course you could start to actually learn some AI or optimisation or whatever.

If you want, there is a course called 18.065 that he is written that is about AI and is far more application-based. He reviews the 30 hours or so (by lecture time) of his famous LA course in the first 5 or so lectures before springing off into everything you need to end up with AI.

But the contents of his classic course (having an intuition for the 4 subspaces, describing and decomposing matrices in terms of the eigenvalues and vectors, analogies for non-square matrices) are in no way maths for the sake of maths, they are fundamental to understanding any onward applications of LA. They are the very basic words and grammar that let you start using LA in real combat situations. So that you could pick any random paper on ai or stats or control theory and actually be able to follow it rather than just be staring at hieroglyphics. It’s really worth the 30 or so hours of your life.

ballooney··on Current use of Linux in spacecraft flight software (2017)
The astronauts are cargo. Dragon capsules have already been flown to the ISS without any of this stuff. It’s too unfair to call it decoration but it’s not far off that.
ballooney··on UK government MPs are using Signal’s automatic deletion feature
I strongly urge UK-base HNers to subscribe. It is one of the few national publications still doing proper long-term investigative journalism into local government (in a way that local papers haven’t had the resources to do for years) and usually signals important stories before the main papers pick them up, especially wrt stories about the rest of the news media. Many people stuck in large media orgs leak to the Eye so they can report that e.g. the Telegraph hasn’t been allowed to report on something that might damage the financial interests of its owners.

And it’s quite funny.

ballooney··on Zoom Acquires Keybase
No you’re confused. He’s asking for a history in which there is no company motivated by anything other than profit. Since there exist many companies motivated by things other than profit, no such history can be provided. Hence the GP is wrong. Hence the irrelevance of downvotes on this cunty website
ballooney··on Zoom Acquires Keybase
You’re very wrong.
ballooney··on I designed and built my own function generator
It’s not a function generator. It’s a software person having a first stab at what they think a function generator is, and then discovering that it’s more complicated and harder than they realised.

It’s a first step in a learning project, not a product. They say as much in the article.

ballooney··on Elon Musk’s plan to build one Starship a week and settle Mars
Settle on Mars
ballooney··on Tin Found in Israel from 3k Years Ago Comes from Cornwall
It's certainly, unambiguously, true (the Silk Roads were roughly 200AD onwards, and the Roman Empire was trading for centuries before that for smaller values of 'global').
