balladeer··on An Amazon programmer’s perspective (2015)
> During the hiring process, on-call is not mentioned in any way

Then next:

> are you willing to work nights and/or weekends

To be fair I'd say this is mention enough.

If someone is willing to (or has to) look the other way at the time of hiring when something like this was explicitly said, then even a "hey, we have on-call here, you fine with that?" would be okay.

balladeer··on An Amazon programmer’s perspective (2015)
I don't know how absurd this sounds but on-call is the only reason I have stayed away from backend or frontend/web development. I had worked on both for few months and ran back to native app development. There might be a place where the company has a "follow the sun" policy for on-call but I haven't come across any.
balladeer··on Signal PINs
I have only set a reg lock pin. I never set any other pin. Then I uninstalled the app. Now when I installed it again today it is asking me for a PIN and the only PIN on Signal I have set was a reg lock pin which is not being accepted.

I remember the PIN and it's also stored in BitWarden and KeePass. Now I am locked out.

balladeer··on Signal PINs
If Signal PINs came with a feature that made it possible for me to not have my identity tied to a phone number I'd have understood (and accepted?) this release and rollout better.
balladeer··on A 125-year-old delivery network that feeds Mumbai
They don't live in Mumbai usually and if they do in the slums. They live on the outskirts and commute by Mumbai Local.

In main areas of Mumbai that amount may not even fetch a small sized windowless room (no kitchen, or living space - just a room and a common washroom outside) and I am not even talking about "posh" Mumbai.

balladeer··on A 125-year-old delivery network that feeds Mumbai
Unfortunately that happens (happened personally with me many times) and it's indeed strange and dangerous.
balladeer··on A 125-year-old delivery network that feeds Mumbai
There's an awesome film that interestingly uses this food delivery network - The Lunchbox (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2350496/).

It stars recently passed away actor Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur (she's in Homeland), and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. They are among the finest from here. It has Max Richter's music and is on Indian Netflix (not sure about rest of the world).

balladeer··on Ask HN: Dark mode for HN please?
It'd be like iOS giving us emojis back then when it instead needed innovation. Having said that HN can use some formatting.
balladeer··on Elon Musk reopening Tesla factory despite Alameda County order
I often notice you listing other (dup?) threads on a broader topic. Is it just an informative exercise as in - "people, check out these too", or more like something frustrating - "why start so many threads!"?
balladeer··on Making Emacs Popular Again
I use VS Code sparsely but this is what has worked for me https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=Shan.cod...
balladeer··on Ask HN: What are the other websites you visit daily?
I will pretty much list the sites I visit daily.

Google News (I couldn't find a clutter free alternative that gives an easy snapshot of news about India/world)

Brief (aka Morning Reader)

https://overcast.fm (I listen to podcasts from the web app when on the computer, I wish they had a native desktop app)

https://theoldreader.com (I've given up on Mac RSS reader apps)

Twitter, Reddit, Some private trackers, https://lobste.rs, MeFi, Vimeo, IMDb (almost daily)

And yes, wikipedia :)

balladeer··on Facebook iOS SDK Remotely Crashing Spotify, TikTok, Pinterest, Winno and More
I think individual businesses (I am talking about the neighbourhood grocery stores and restaurants) ought to move to their own websites, their own apps (at least branding if there are template apps) as much as they can. I believe we have had enough of centralisation and consolidation which aren't problematic only when they are about a messaging service or a social network.
balladeer··on Why it's great to write blog posts
I came across https://write.as and it seems great. In fact I use it to share one-off texts with few of my close friends. But there's no commenting and I don't want to use Disqus.

Is there any simpler workflow to use this - without Jekyll I mean?

balladeer··on What would you do if you lost your Google account?
> (looking at you mailbox.org)

It's been few years. I am on Mailbox's 12 Euro/year plan which has "forum" only support (I am not sure it changed after I became a customer). My emails suddenly stopped working once and I received email response after a week (which just had an irrelevant link). I had reset the mail setup by then after backing up email from local client. I replied to the email asking what went wrong and never received a reply. They seem very aloof and high-handed about customer support if I may say so.

I am looking at moving my mail provider. I have stopped using @mailbox.org mail for online a/c signups etc (which I did a lot earlier) and have started removing it from wherever it is used already.

Is Migadu stable and been around? How's their service and privacy track record? Did you evaluate any other provider in Euro 12-20/year budget range? My email usage is extremely low volume.

balladeer··on What would you do if you lost your Google account?
At least you can chat with someone, call someone, email someone at Apple Support very easily.

balladeer··on The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic could have been prevented
Indeed. But should we not even discuss, instead, about something like this?

One of the treating physicians, Dr. Li Wenliang, warned some colleagues about the new illness on December 31. Instead of spreading the word about the new pathogen and dispatching the country’s top infectious disease detectives to Wuhan, the police arrested Dr. Li and accused him of “spreading rumors.” He died on February 7 from the coronavirus that he contracted while treating patients. It took China’s president Xi Jinping until January 7 to order his top medical officials to investigate the outbreak. They publicly denied it was communicable person-to-person. That allowed Chinese lunar New Year celebrations and holiday breaks to go ahead as planned, sending infected people from Wuhan around the country and across the planet.

balladeer··on The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic could have been prevented
We are literally not talking about a wildfire in a neighbouring country. It's a human to human transmissible pandemic in "2020". And then factor in geopolitics: Indo-China border movement, compared with Chinese people travelling to countries in the west (or other countries around China). Actually you could have said this for India-Nepal, even India-Bhutan, and maybe India-Bangladesh as well; but not China and India.

(Let's assume)

You have followed US policy making, lobbying and stuff like how a coccus of ultra rich people/execs are actually running the Govt from behind the curtain and all that. So when you read all that that usually means the groups do that to different parties i.e maybe one group does that to the republicans and another to the democrats.

(Now enter India)

This guy alone pretty much controls the Govt of India and its decisions irrespective of the party, more so with this current right wing Govt (they are like family).

If you read a bit, there are Govt decisions that look like this:

Let's say there are couple of shops in a village. One of those is billionaire's shop. This is a very famous village market among neighbouring villages. Business is good, especially at night (some famous fair/shrine or whatever). There's the huge high central light in the village square - this is the only light that keeps the market area lit. Now the village head decides he needs to shift the light to a better location so that it will be used even better, especially for the nightly shopping. Fair. Great idea! So he makes a declaration that the village assembly has taken an unanimous decision to move the light to the inside of billionaire's shop so that it is better for the villagers and all the shop keepers in the village. And the best part is the villagers cheer this decision and run after anyone who even has a doubt about this decision let alone an objection.

However if the next time this right wing Govt loses (which seems highly unlikely the way this party/Govt has consolidated power) he might be in trouble but I doubt that would be something he can't handle or hasn't handled before.

balladeer··on The Decline of Usability
I also figured it out just now after 8 years of Mac usage. But I already knew that I don't know/use most of the dedicated Mac shortcuts (thought I think I should).
balladeer··on The Decline of Usability
A lot of things in iOS are counterintuitive. Everything happens via a "Share" option. You want to do something, you click "Share" option and hope there's that option that you need.

By the way, on my 7 at least, there's a "Folder" icon right before the "Reply" icon that can also be used to move the message and you can add move option in one of the swipe gestures as well.

balladeer··on New iPhone SE
I agree. I look at it as the price of a phone, not price of an iPhone and the new iPhone SE as of today is too costly for what it offers.

I switched to iPhone (older SE) from Android. Size and privacy were two reasons. Then my SE broke down after 3 years (I hadn't put any protective gear). I bought 7 as I needed another phone immediately and I was going away for two months.

The last one year I have been using 7 the lack of a headphone jack is so frustrating I would never buy the new SE.

The next time I have to buy a phone I will buy the smartphone that will provide at least 2-3 years of guaranteed OS upgrades (or there's Lineage support) and has a headphone jack.

balladeer··on The Metric We Need to Manage Covid-19
India's tests/M is 149. Brazil's 296. Compared to 8894 of USA as of today.

Positive % out of tests: USA ~20%, India: ~5%, Brazil: ~38%.

But at least here in India we test when we are like really really really really sure this person possibly has COVID-19 (if not the very symptoms then either extremely close proximity of a COVID +ve or at a cluster). So that's also there.

balladeer··on Digital hoarders: Our terabytes are put to use for the betterment of mankind
You can. I haven't checked their products in a long time. Look out for:

[1] Old file versions and deleted file retention - default was 30 days I think. You pay extra to make it a 1 year, and more to make it forever forever.

[2] Keep connecting the external drives or lose that data. Because the last time I checked if you don't connect your drive (or maybe the computer/laptop too, not sure) regularly the files are marked as "deleted" and [1] will kick in even though you'll keep paying (unless you are paying extra).

[3] They didn't have restore option from the app - either use their website (I am not sure how the partial/interrupted restores were handled from a browser) or they will send a restore drive to your home (it was free iirc).

If it works for you you can give the service a shot. Their Mac app, at least, is really really good (way better than competition including the relic called Time Machine).

balladeer··on Google is rebranding Hangouts Chat as just Google Chat
No, not really bringing us back where we were. Back then in the beginning it was a federated XMPP implementation and you could talk with G Chat accounts from outside the Google ecosystem and that's not changing.

Also, there's another "Chat" in Google stables right now - Google's RCS messaging app.

My guess would be Google is just doing its periodic itch thingie that it does with messengers and social networks.

balladeer··on Rclone – Sync files and directories to many cloud storage providers
b2 and Scaleway are quite cheap (Wasabi would have been cheaper but that's >= 1TB). Check this post put [1] - not mine.

I personally use b2 with restic.

balladeer··on Thanks to Bookshop, indies stand a chance against Amazon
I don't seem to any benefit here. In fact it takes away from the experience of going to a bookstore and everything related to it; at a higher cost and with a delayed delivery. Besides is this site a non profit? For all I know they might get acquired and then we all will get to see that last email.
balladeer··on Bill Gates calls for nationwide shutdown
Till the time widespread testing is ensured (and hospitals have some breather). Then test and isolate the clusters and keep relatively relaxed other "relatively unaffected" areas and not impose full blown lockdown.

> The numbers from Korea, Italy and the Diamond princess are not good but they are not world-ending either.

You lumped Korea and Italy together which is strange. Then apparently (seeing your comment chain) you tried to transpose it onto US and rest of the world.

Korea was ready (experience with previous outbreaks). They started early. They tested like there's no tomorrow and are still doing that. Test - isolate, test - isolate, test - isolate. Everybody wearing masks - negative, positive, or untested. Everybody [1]

And their health infra is impeccable. They are people with a great civic sense (I have lived there for months).
