bajsejohannes··on Loom EGA/VGA Comparison
Wow, that's amazing. Here is one of the galleries he's showing in the video: http://www.effectgames.com/demos/canvascycle/

I couldn't find the one with adjustable time of day, though.

bajsejohannes··on UK to depart from GDPR
You are conflating GDPR and the annoying cookie dialogs.

GDPR regulates, among other things, how information is stored and deleted on servers. I have worked at multiple companies in both Europe and the US who take this very seriously and has definitely altered their practices based on this.

For example, pre-GDPR, we would "mark as deleted" but not delete. Now we delete.

bajsejohannes··on Fraidycat: Follow from afar
I was thinking of the alternative being a website like google reader. Yes, you give up control of the data about your reading habits, but you know the scope of what you give up.

For what it's worth, I agree that the traditional model gives up all control. I'm not a fan of that either, and I go to some lengths to isolate processes from each other. I certainly wish we had saner desktop OSes.

bajsejohannes··on Fraidycat: Follow from afar
Somewhat beside the point, but I don't understand how people are not terrified of browser extensions. I have decided to trust two and hoping to get rid of one of them eventually.

I'm not about to get a browser extension for an RSS reader.

bajsejohannes··on Zero Data App
If you like this, you might also like https://www.inkandswitch.com/local-first.html . Some overlap of ideas.
bajsejohannes··on Killing TurboTax
Not only do they kill other companies, but they kill the government's ability to compete. As is mentioned in other threads, many countries don't have this tax filling non-sense at all. The government just says: Here's what we're basing your taxes on; let us know if there are any mistakes.

It's absurd to spend ones time and money to file taxes only to have the government punish you because you didn't get the right answer.

bajsejohannes··on Speed Is the Killer Feature
It seems like Apple is moving backwards on this at the moment, though. Perhaps they were more concerned about it when they were trying to get into the market.

Examples I can think of: The emoji selector (ctrl+cmd+space) is quite slow. On my brand new macbook, it's a small noticeable pause, and on my old macbook it's several seconds (during which time keyboard input is lost).

> If you can’t speed up a specific action, you can often fake it. Perceived speed is just as important as actual speed.

Second example is facetime on my iPhone. They fake being fast by showing the last opened screen. For me, it's very often the "most recent calls". The problem is that in the meantime there's been another call. Result: I see the person I want to call back, tap on the screen where they are, observe that the content changes and I call the wrong person. This happens often enough that I should learn, but somehow I don't.

bajsejohannes··on Israeli study finds 94% drop in symptomatic Covid-19 cases with Pfizer vaccine
Huh, I hadn't seen this. Thanks for enlightening me.

I'm curious where these 70M doses are bought but not approved. As far as I can tell, AstraZeneca is approved all over Europe.

bajsejohannes··on Israeli study finds 94% drop in symptomatic Covid-19 cases with Pfizer vaccine
The bottleneck is vaccine production. It doesn't matter how fast you vaccinate.

Sure, Israel did a great job negotiating for vaccines, but it's a zero-sum game so only a few countries could have pulled this off.

bajsejohannes··on Repairability
They can't boot without a battery, but for a different reason: The laptop only draws power from the battery, not from the power plug. There is no power connection other than through the battery.
bajsejohannes··on Leap second hiatus
This is what I'd _like_ to do, but unfortunately it's not well supported. As far as I know, all OSes store the time including leap seconds, so there's no way to go back to TAI. And even if it were, that time zone is not available in user programs.

edit: Oh, I see that it's available in Linux https://www.man7.org/linux/man-pages/man3/clock_gettime.3.ht... . Can't find similar calls for Windows or OSX

bajsejohannes··on Pfizer's CEO sold $5.6M in stock on same day of vaccine news
A slightly wrong number is not "fake news".
bajsejohannes··on Pressing YubiKeys
Yeah, that seems a little myopic. I've worked at more places without YubiKeys than with them.

Edit: To be clear, I've had plenty of _other_ 2FA devices.

bajsejohannes··on Maud: Compile-time HTML templates for Rust

bajsejohannes··on Show HN: Lag – Know Before You Go
Sorry for being pedantic, but this app is measuring bandwidth, not lag (latency).

See for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lag

bajsejohannes··on Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs (SICP) Book
I finally read SICP half way through my career, but at that point it was too much old news to keep me interested, even if I recognized that it was a really well written book. So I actually stopped half way.

Does anyone know of a good summary or alternate text of all the knowledge in it?

bajsejohannes··on R U OK?
Digression that might be interesting for the HN crowd: The healthcheck for Apache ZooKeeper is simply sending it `ruok` and receiving `imok` if it's healthy:

    $ echo ruok | nc 127.0.0.1 5111
    imok
bajsejohannes··on ReMarkable MicroSD (2019)
One really cool thing about it is that you can ssh to it over USB. No setup or installation, just find the IP-address in on the tablet and connect.
bajsejohannes··on Twitter is dropping coding terms like 'master' and 'slave'
> What is the purpose of removing those words? Is it like pretending these relationships don't exist?

I wonder about this too. Slavery still exists in various forms. Does removing the word from software make us feel like we're making progress towards removing slavery, while there are better ways to use our time/money to fight it?

Last time I was in this discussion, I ended up donating to antislavery.org, so who knows; maybe it brings focus to the cause.

I'm pretty neutral about removing the word from software, though. I don't really think it changes the dial much in any direction.

bajsejohannes··on Why I Use Suckless Tools
I'm guessing it's because of their philosophy that more lines of code might be a liability: https://suckless.org/philosophy/

Note that you can use dwm just fine without any patches.

bajsejohannes··on The original source code of Microsoft GW-BASIC from 1983
Unfortunately, I can't get MS-DOS 2.0 to run in DOSBOX ("Invalid COMMAND.COM") and running MASM.EXE directly gives me some really interesting errors (looks like it's reading uninitialized memory).

I think you're on to something here, though!

bajsejohannes··on The original source code of Microsoft GW-BASIC from 1983
That's a good observation. I tried stripping zeroes, but unfortunately it's the same error message.
bajsejohannes··on The original source code of Microsoft GW-BASIC from 1983
Has anyone got it compiling yet?

I've tried in DOSBOX, using this MASM from this (possibly sketchy?) site: http://www.mediafire.com/file/x13v7gqqmw1pom7/8086_Assembler... . The output is as follows:

Microsoft (R) Macro Assembler Version 5.00

TASM (version 2.5) gives a similar error.
bajsejohannes··on The Phix Programming Language
I don't understand why anyone would create a one-indexed language these days. I feel like Dijkstra laid out pretty well why zero-indexing is objectively better [1]. If that wasn't enough, it's also most common by far.

bajsejohannes··on Goodbye, EdgeHTML
Containers (per-tab identity) are my favorite Firefox feature these days
bajsejohannes··on The latest on Messages, Allo, Duo and Hangouts
> More importantly, new Product X, whatever it is, helps to attract new top talent. Top Talent is going to want to fix old things, they want to build new.

Is that really true? I would personally chose to work on Facetime than Google's new messaging system, all else being equal.

Facetime is really solid and I'm sure I could learn a ton from the expertise there; as well as working on something new within that product.

In contrast, Google's messaging systems just seem like a mess. I would feel like it could be cancelled at any time, that we didn't have the best talent (because it's spread across the various systems) and honestly would be slightly embarrassed to talk about it ("yeah, I know, yet another message system from Google").

bajsejohannes··on Last Week in Pony – November 4, 2018
I'm pretty into Pony, but I don't understand why this is posted or have gathered so many votes. If there's a post about Pony on the front page of HN, it shouldn't be this.
bajsejohannes··on Questions
This is a plausible story, but that doesn't mean it's true. Anecdotally I felt more productive living in a warmer place than when living in Scandinavia. I think it completely depends on your situation and an actual study is needed to prove it one way or the other.

I also recall Jared Diamond debunking this as a theory for why "the west" got ahead in his book Guns, Germs, and Steel.

bajsejohannes··on A Better Way to Cancel Noise
I have the QC35 and it feels like overpressure to me. Might be an individual thing.
bajsejohannes··on The Absurdity of Detecting Gravitational Waves (2017) [video]
One thing the book Black Hole Blues (Janna Levin) brought home to me was the absurdity of actually getting this project done. Now that it's complete, it's easy to say that it was obviously a good idea. It's another thing entirely to bet huge budgets on something that doesn't seem very likely to succeed.
