bagrow··on The dream of Ara: Inside the rise and fall of Google’s most revolutionary phone
How many smartphone users even know how much RAM they have? Smartphones are eating everything because they just work. Even more than PCs, which are also heavily commoditized these days. It seems like almost everyone thinks of upgrading computers and phones these days the way I would think of upgrading my microwave: by buying a new one.

Is this a very western-centric view? Maybe... But it seems like everyone wants things to just work and unless they are VERY price-conscious, they don't want to think about it much.

bagrow··on Five Year Mission
This guy's stuff is phenomenal. I regularly consulted his hexagonal grid guide when doing certain simulations. Hope he doesn't give up completely.
bagrow··on What Scientific Term or Concept Ought to be More Widely Known?
I disagree about the emphasis on prediction. Science involves predictions, but it does not involve only predictions.

Chaos theory, for example, shows that physical, deterministic systems can be rigorously understood while prediction is (approximately) impossible. Likewise, you can make predictions without understanding, with sufficiently advanced machine learning (interpretability vs. flexibility).

bagrow··on Caching Antipatterns
My first (incorrect) thought when reading the headline was that they were building a library of anti-patterns. Not sure how to do that, seems like a challenge to data mine, but it would be very cool to have. Anyone know of such a thing?
bagrow··on Reasons 2016 was a great year for humanity
Pessimistically (I know, I know), it seems to me that recent events put many of these advances under threat. Science funding cuts and rollbacks of environmental protections can take out half the list or more. How great can these accomplishments really be if they can be so easily undone?
bagrow··on Bram Moolenaar Discusses Developing Vim, How He Uses It, and Version 8
Anybody using a neovim MacOS app [1]? I'm a huge vim user, but mostly via MacVim [2].

bagrow··on Why squared error? (2014)
Interesting discussion. Not sure about the breakdown between ridge regression and LASSO though. The difference is not in the error term but in the regularization term.
bagrow··on What Percent of the Top-Voted Comments in Reddit Threads Were Also First Comment?
What's the weird bump around rank = 30?

Edit: It's probably related to the cutoff of 30 comments, but it's still not obvious to me...

bagrow··on The Threat to Americas Electrical Grid Is Bigger Than Imagined
Restarting a down grid is nontrivial. Small power stations are used to kickstart the larger stations. Think of the starter motor in a car. Now do all of this while precisely maintaining 60 Hz (in the US) everywhere.
bagrow··on GM microbes created that can’t escape the lab (2015)
Life... uh... finds a way.
bagrow··on Pymux: a tmux clone in pure Python
This is discussed in the readme. One point:

> The big advantage of using Python and prompt_toolkit is that the implementation of new features becomes very easy.

bagrow··on Evil Icons – Lightweight SVG icons for your web project
Bummed that these icons don't show emacs being corrupted from within by the seductive allure of vim.
bagrow··on [dead]
"I am a girl..." vs. "I am a programmer...". Wow, sexist much?
bagrow··on The legend of John von Neumann (1973)
The section on "work habits" is especially amazing. I know people who are very smart but also very lazy. They end up falling behind in the long run; may be a corollary to the Curse of the Gifted.

Clippers! Clippers! Clippers!
bagrow··on [dead]
That Orwell quote is taken far out of context. He actually said, "The Penguin Books are splendid value for sixpence, so splendid that if other publishers had any sense they would combine against them and suppress them."

bagrow··on Cinnamon can reverse changes in the brains of mice with Parkinsons
Good grief, maybe I'm getting old, but is up with that font size?
bagrow··on Retirement of Prof. Andy Tanenbaum
That 'now' picture has to be pushing 20 years old...
