badmintonbaseba··on The scientific “unit” we call the decibel
Notice how both dB and octave are ratios, but for some reason for frequency ratios we don't use bels or decibels. An octave is a ratio of 2, a bel is a ratio of 10.
badmintonbaseba··on ChatGPT Is a Gimmick
I mostly use it as a replacement of a search engine and exploration, mostly for subjects that I'm learning from scratch, and I don't have a good grasp of the official documentation and good keywords yet. It competes with searching for guides in traditional search engines, but that's easy to beat with today's SEO infested web.

Its quality seems to vary wildly between various subjects, but annoyingly it presents itself with uniform confidence.

badmintonbaseba··on KDE is finally getting a native virtual machine manager called “Karton”
The current architecture is wayland based, with weston and an RDP backend, and the Windows host running an RDP client. X11 apps run on Xwayland within WSL2, so ultimately rendered on the same RDP client.
badmintonbaseba··on Multiple security issues in GNU Screen
Issues shouldn't really live in the same source tree, IMO. But AFAIK there are forges that keep the issues in the same repository, just not in the same tree of commits that the source tree has, git notes style.
badmintonbaseba··on My quest to make motorcycle riding that tad bit safer
Isn't the issue that some people work around MOT decibel limits? After all they only need to pass the decibel limit on the MOT test, and not on the road in regular use.

The engineering solution approach doesn't seem to be fundamentally different to speed cameras.

badmintonbaseba··on Heat stress mitigation by trees and shelters at bus stops
Would the female trees do that if there weren't any male trees around?
badmintonbaseba··on Ty: A fast Python type checker and language server
Some tricks that worked for me in the past:

1. use rr for debugging your binary wheel, you can set up watchpoints, and reverse step/continue from the segfault.

2. compile and run your wheel with sanitizers (ASAN, UBSAN).

I rarely use valgrind so I can't comment on that.

Isn't mypy extensible with plugins?
badmintonbaseba··on Inheritance was invented as a performance hack (2021)
> Usually, the calls were via some abstract interface with a single implementor

What's described here is over-generic code, instead of KISS and just keeping an eye on extensibility instead of generalizing ahead of time. This can happen in any paradigm.

badmintonbaseba··on Perfect Random Floating-Point Numbers
If you can generate a sequence of independent fair coin flips of indefinite length (this is a big if, but hold that though), then you can effectively generate a true real number uniformly from the unit interval. What you can't do is to access all of its digits all at once. But to correctly round it to a value representable in a given floating-point representation you don't need all the digits, you only need enough digits to decide whether the number falls into an interval where all reals round to the same value.

As for generating independent fair coin flips of indefinite length, none of the PRNGs qualify.

badmintonbaseba··on Perfect Random Floating-Point Numbers
Generalizing this to arbitrary intervals, not just [0, 1) looks tricky. Just scaling and shifting a perfect uniform result from [0, 1) doesn't result in a perfect random floating-point number.
badmintonbaseba··on Perfect Random Floating-Point Numbers
That looks kinda the same end result as the fixed point method, but possibly cheaper to execute.
badmintonbaseba··on We identified a North Korean hacker who tried to get a job
If you don't want to be an employee then don't sign an employment contract.
badmintonbaseba··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
I don't see any LibreOffice related processes on my Debian machine, but I have it installed. Does it do that on Windows only, or distros disable this by default?
badmintonbaseba··on Some __nonstring__ Turbulence
But Linus broke the kernel for gcc<15, a CI would have surely caught it.

And Linus is usually much more critical in what gets into master when it comes to other people's contribution, let alone into an RC.

badmintonbaseba··on You wouldn't steal a font
An allow-list would probably suck for local development for users that do have a valid license.
badmintonbaseba··on You wouldn't steal a font
There is a large range of permissive licensing between public domain and "fonts that cost money". Free as in freedom Linux distros ship a sizable set of fonts, and I'm sure most of them are licensed permissively.
badmintonbaseba··on A Pixel Is Not a Little Square (1995) [pdf]
Pixels displayed on CRT displays are not squares, but they are not infinitely small dots either. They are much less well-defined blobs, that even overlap with each other.

There is also the complication of composite video signals, where you can't treat pixels as linearly independent components.

badmintonbaseba··on Hacktical C: practical hacker's guide to the C programming language
> The growable array type ("vector" following C++ parlance) lacks the bifurcated reservation API meaning it has the same problem as Bjarne's std::vector - but it's 2025 people, just because C++ made this mistake last century doesn't mean you need to copy them.

What's "the bifurcated reservation API"?

badmintonbaseba··on An image of an archeologist adventurer who wears a hat and uses a bullwhip
It's a good example of what happens when a copyright is expired.
badmintonbaseba··on Spammers are better at SPF, DKIM, and DMARC than everyone else
Naively I thought that one value proposition of SPF, DKIM and DMARC is that reputation shifts from based on IP to be based on domain, once you set these up correctly. So as long as you can maintain a good reputation for your domain and have SPF, DKIM and DMARC correctly set up, then you can host your SMTP server at any IP and your emails will get delivered.

I wonder why it doesn't work this way.

badmintonbaseba··on Show HN: I built a website for sharing drum patterns
bug: when playing back an Nx16 pattern, and switching, then when rolling to the next pattern the very first beat is played from the previously played pattern instead of the current one.
badmintonbaseba··on Show HN: I built website for sharing Drum Patterns
They don't roll over to the next 16 on playback automatically, which makes this very awkward.
badmintonbaseba··on Wheel Reinventor’s Principles (2024)
Both the dark and the light themes look perfectly readable to me, and I'm rather nitpicky on contrast.
badmintonbaseba··on The Pain That Is GitHub Actions
I prefer python there, although we do test/deploy on Windows too, so it's nice to have a common python script for Windows and Linux CI. Not interested in making bash work on Windows or scripting in powershell. And although it's a lot more awkward to use python than bash for invoking subprocesses, it's nicer in most other ways.
badmintonbaseba··on Recommendations for designing magic numbers of binary file formats
Then there is mkv/webm, where strictly speaking you need to implement at least part of an EBML parser to distinguish them. Possibly why no other file format adopts EBML, everything just recognizes it as either of mkv or matroska based on dodgy heuristics.
badmintonbaseba··on IO Devices and Latency
What IPC mechanisms exist between sqlite processes accessing the same database, other than file locking and some atomic IO operations ensured by the OS.
badmintonbaseba··on My Scammer Girlfriend: Baiting a Romance Fraudster
If you send through a MUA (like Thunderbird) that uses Gmail's SMTP then Gmail do expose your IP address. Most other email providers do the same.

> Under normal circumstances your email client (MUA) connects to your email service provider (MTA), which then sends the email to the MTA of the recipient. So the IP of your MTA (email hosting service), not your MUA (your computer) is exposed.

This is incorrect, most email providers' MTA includes the MUA's IP address in the headers.

badmintonbaseba··on My Scammer Girlfriend: Baiting a Romance Fraudster
It still does, just tested it.
badmintonbaseba··on IO Devices and Latency
You don't have IPC for sqlite, do you?
