Agree. And whenever I see someone recommend Peter Watts I feel the need to add a note warning that he's got a lot of sexual torture stuff in his work so might not be to everyone's taste.

Well I'm glad you're certain that none of the passengers on the train were using their phone for critical patient care or handling a time sensitive family issue.
badcppdev··on Raspberry Pi receives strategic investment from Arm
Also the IO controller on the RPi5 is custom silicon

"RP1 is our I/O controller for Raspberry Pi 5, designed by the same team at Raspberry Pi that delivered the RP2040 microcontroller, and implemented, like RP2040, on TSMC’s mature 40LP process. It provides two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 interfaces; a Gigabit Ethernet controller; two four-lane MIPI transceivers for camera and display; analogue video output; 3.3V general-purpose I/O (GPIO); and the usual collection of GPIO-multiplexed low-speed interfaces (UART, SPI, I2C, I2S, and PWM). A four-lane PCI Express 2.0 interface provides a 16Gb/s link back to BCM2712.

Under development since 2016, RP1 is by a good margin the longest-running, most complex, and (at $15 million) most expensive program we’ve ever undertaken here at Raspberry Pi. It has undergone substantial evolution over the years, as our projected requirements have changed: the C0 step used on Raspberry Pi 5 is the third major revision of the silicon. And while its interfaces differ in fine detail from those of BCM2711, they have been designed to be very similar from a functional perspective, ensuring a high degree of compatibility with earlier Raspberry Pi devices."

It's quite all right for you to be unhappy about the lack of one feature on the newest version of the RPi but I think you're overstating it by claiming that they are shooting themselves in the foot.

Also are you saying that you've already switched to the Orange Pi 5? That's amazingly fast considering the RPi5 was launched less than 2 weeks ago.

badcppdev··on What the Goddamn Hell Is Going on in the Tech Industry?
It's because the tech economy is a new pathway for money to flow. The wage inflation spiral that terrifies economists is where current jobs start paying more which leads to inflation in prices for goods and services which leads to the requirement for higher wages... I think that's the theory of the wage spiral.

So OPs theory is that the government can print money, boost GDP, and pay out profits to the owners/shareholders but not trigger the inflation... until now

badcppdev··on Israel was removed from Baidu Maps earlier today
So we have a phenomena where people of group X report anti-X content. Is there an accepted term for that? Not quite the Streisand effect.

I wonder how much that contributes to the viralness(virality?) of some of this hate speech? It's definitely not healthy and a good reason to get off social media.

badcppdev··on Israel was removed from Baidu Maps earlier today
I think there's a big chance it's a bug. Small chance it's a political motivated 'sabotage' from someone low down in the hierarchy. Super low chance it's a political statement from the company management.

A funny thing I just noted that could lead to this behaviour is that if you wanted to place the label for Israel at the centre of Israel then I think it would be in Palestine.

I'm not 100% sure because Google Maps doesn't show a label for Palestine.

You have examples of cultures with high birth rates but you aren't telling me whether those birthrates increase or decrease with better healthcare/reduced mortality rates.
badcppdev··on The death of a public intellectual
Well imho you have to study the OT in the light of his new message. If you're a Christian then your priority is the message of Christ which seems quite broad and sweeping in a good way. And therefore contradicts all the intolerant teachings from the OT.

(Disclaimer: not a Christian. Constantly amazed at people who have faith)

badcppdev··on The human body has 1.8T cells dedicated to defending it
"lymphomas (Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin), multiple myeloma, and most types of leukemia start in immune system blood cells" - Google

I guess OP is commenting in a vague manner that those 1.8T cells might not be defending the body

badcppdev··on First malaria vaccine reduces early childhood mortality
There are very very strong historical precedents indicating that a decrease in childhood mortality leads to a decline in birth rates. You should google this.

"The child survival hypothesis states that if child mortality is reduced, then eventually fertility reduction follows, with the net effect of lower growth of population. In populations living under low socioeconomic conditions, other factors have also been observed. The question arises whether fertility reduction could be influenced by family planning. Bangladesh data have demonstrated that if not a single child died in a family then the average total fertility rate (TFR) was 2.6 children; when 1 child died the number was 4.7 children; 2 child deaths meant 6.2 children; and more than 3 child deaths boosted the TFR to 8.3 children."[0]

Yeah ok that just leaves me more amazed. I think the military owns about 1% of all US territory measured by area.
badcppdev··on LIGO Surpasses the Quantum Limit
There is a chance that LIGO will detect something we don't expect. I believe that has happened quite a bit with optical microscopes and telescopes.

Edit: Actually you said that but consider it unlikely which I absolutely can't argue with.

The wikipedia article links to San Clemente Island [0]

I mention because I am constantly amazed at the area of land dedicated to the US Military. San Clemente Island is a 34 km long 147 km2 and shows traces of human activity dating back 10,000 years. Currently it's used as a live firing range and has a small naval installation on it.

Not judging. Just amazed.

badcppdev··on EU-funded report calls for wealth of super-rich to be taxed, not income
They would only lose control if they were incompetent and it was just luck that put them in control in the first place.

The suggested wealth tax is 2%. I have no concerns that a billionaire capable of creating a multi billion dollar business would have any issues raising $20 million per year to sort out their tax bill.

Are there any billionaires you're worried about in particular?

badcppdev··on A 15 pound computer to inspire young programmers (2011)
My 2p as parent with RPis + multiple Microbits in the house.

Microbits are far more limited in their capabilities but they are a useful stepping stone because they are limited. They can be used like a piece of lego as part of a larger creation.

They have inbuilt switches and sensors and it is easier to connect extra components to a Microbit. You don't even need a breakout board. They run off batteries quite happily and once you have uploaded a program onto the Microbit you might only need that single battery box. And if you have two or more of them then you can use the inbuilt wireless connectivity very easily.

The proprietary nature of the code running the RPis and Microbits is not a factor for me. Once my kids get closer to being teenagers hopefully there'll be some fully open platforms available for the next steps.

badcppdev··on A 15 pound computer to inspire young programmers (2011)
No you use "stones" for peoples weight. Which I consider to be the least useful unit of measurement in common use today.
badcppdev··on EU-funded report calls for wealth of super-rich to be taxed, not income
"Why would it matter?". There are many historical and current day examples of the problems in societies with very high wealth inequality.

I don't want to live in a dystopia with _untouchable_ hyper wealth individuals so I believe that governments should make it very hard to stay a billionaire and virtually impossible for people to inherit that level of generational wealth from their family.

I am very keen for levels of taxation (and the closing of all the loopholes) that would force billionaires to liquidate significant percentages of their assets to pay taxes as I think it will encourage them to work a bit harder. After all if they managed to become a billionaire once they must be very clever, right?

badcppdev··on EU-funded report calls for wealth of super-rich to be taxed, not income
I don't believe that market rates are applicable in all of these situations. I think that the super rich benefit from economies of scale which means that they spend £X on accountants and benefit £1000X
badcppdev··on EU-funded report calls for wealth of super-rich to be taxed, not income
We are talking about taxing the super rich in the EU to pay for a service (defence) that is currently paid by other people.

I agree with you that the economies of most EU countries cannot sustain US military spending levels.

My theory is that since the rich people in those EU countries are amassing wealth at a faster level than the economy is growing then we should use some of that growing wealth to ensure that the economy (and country) are properly defended. Also use the funds for education and infrastructure.

badcppdev··on EU-funded report calls for wealth of super-rich to be taxed, not income
Partisanship is bad but I also get the impression that all major parties in the US and UK are very uninterested in increasing taxes on their donors
badcppdev··on EU-funded report calls for wealth of super-rich to be taxed, not income
The first point makes sense. But your contributions to this discussion is significantly hampered by that choice. Perhaps start a throwaway account where you can share more specific links and examples.

If this is a subject that you think is important then make an effort.

badcppdev··on EU-funded report calls for wealth of super-rich to be taxed, not income
So American tax payers are subsidising your security costs? NATO has benefits and costs. Some of the costs are financial and some are political. All of that has to be figured in when you are talking about how the super-rich benefit greatly from the current situation and do not pay proportionally
