badcede··on WhatsApp Cofounder Brian Acton on Why He Left $850M Behind
Cognitive dissonance explains it. I don't have a billion dollars. Is there something wrong with me? No, the billionaire is evil.
badcede··on Go West
The sour grapes are strong with the rest.
badcede··on Inside the Dramatic, Painful, and Hugely Successful Return of Reddit's Founders
Defecating in public was not cool. Even GG Allin at his peak was eww.
badcede··on Subject: Airbnb (2011)
A better story is better marketing.
badcede··on Twitter CEO: conservative employees ‘dont feel safe to express their opinions’
This punishment preoccupation sounds pretty hatey to me.
badcede··on SpaceX announces plan to announce plan to send someone around the moon on a BFR
"SpaceX announces plan"
badcede··on What Companies Mean by Culture Fit
Spoken like a chosen breed.
badcede··on Why Socialists Don't Believe in Fun (1943)
Heaven is a place, a place where nothing, nothing ever happens.

badcede··on Why Socialists Don't Believe in Fun (1943)
Almost nothing from 50 years ago is even remembered, let alone still read, let alone as fresh as Orwell. You make the same point by giving him Aristophanes for company.
badcede··on Sperm Count Zero
For children, it's always about what the parents want. Children will do anything for their parents.

Kids don't put themselves in news articles. It's the parents who do it, but they always say the child spontaneously behaved that way.

badcede··on The cult of WeWork
The moon thing was a cold war narrative.
badcede··on Survival Tips for Women in Tech
They're not more prevalent in SV. What's more prevalent are activists who insist that it is and have made it socially costly to contradict them.
badcede··on Prosecuting homeless for sleeping outside may violate U.S. Constitution: ruling
I believe that was Anatole's point.
badcede··on How to Get Kids to Do Chores: Does the Maya Method Work?
Parents can love their kids without being their buddy. In fact, the buddy thing often comes from the parent's own unmet need for connection, and that's stressful for the kid. Parents and children are not peers.
badcede··on Some Facebook Employees Unite to Challenge Its ‘Intolerant’ Liberal Culture
Politics does not pervade every single interaction. Humans also love.
badcede··on China Has Withheld Samples of a Dangerous Flu Virus
No government is "trustworthy". Singling out the one you don't like seems dodgy.
badcede··on Insured, but Still Owing $109K for a Heart Attack
>Sounds all fine and dandy until you realize that these charges will just be made up for by people that aren't able to get NPR to publish a story about them.

Sounds a bit like getting support from Google.

badcede··on To understand how group dynamics work online, look no further than Numtot
“All it takes is one person being like, ‘Oh not all police are bad,’ and it can get very bad,” she said.
badcede··on How to build an NPM worm
It's status signaling, a way of saying that you're better than other people. Same as acting superior to the masses who like a popular band.
badcede··on The Importance of Having Your Pain Be Legible
"Glad to be able to upvote an article like this."

"The prevalence of articles about things that aren't software or hardware hacking"

"tragic"

badcede··on AMA with Substack and Matt Taibbi about a new business model for journalism
"Raise doubts" is a bit stingy. Here is what one of the allegedly-harrassed women had to say (in the Paste article): “These claims that Matt would do this stuff are ridiculous,” she said. “I left The eXile because we started dating, and Matt was worried about impropriety. He didn’t even ask me out at work! Matt is a fundamentally decent and kind person.”

The smear seems to me to have been completely refuted on the facts, and there's a second issue: if it hadn't been, there's no way those mainstream publications would have retracted it en masse (especially not given the social climate around that topic). When was the last time they all did that? It's practically a magic trick to get them to do that.

badcede··on Why Children Aren't Behaving and What We Can Do About It
That's consistent with the children being phobic.
badcede··on Ask HN: How has working remotely for long periods affected your social skills?
People with "affected" social skills are not likely to be conscious of how their social skills were "affected".
badcede··on Jim Black's Steve Jobs Story
That's in no way a counter-argument.
badcede··on Life as a stepmother
Best wishes with your difficult situation. Hell is not a picnic.
badcede··on Life as a stepmother
"I never say anything negative."

That's smart and so important. Children often do that because, rightly or wrongly, they feel that loyalty to the remaining parent requires it of them. But it intensifies the pain of being caught in the split. You can't fix that, but at least you're not making it worse, and they may see that more clearly when they've grown up.

badcede··on California to become first U.S. state mandating solar on new homes
That is great fucking writing.
badcede··on Unlocking the Business Secrets of Escape Rooms
Sounds a bit like how we might all still enjoy solving puzzles even after the AIs take over. (I don't think the AIs will take over, but I also don't think we'll stop solving puzzles if they do.)
badcede··on How I got my first thousand users
You're right, it all feels samey, in an uneasy way. Maybe the "How I..." ecosystem is mostly self-referential.
badcede··on Ask HN: How do you benefit from Hacker News?
And yet here you are.
