bad_haircut72··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Im anti MAGA because it was obvious from the beginning it was a pack of lies. He ran on "no news wars" and then started one. Ad nauseum. There no point debating policy with the Mafia who are taking over your block. If it were about policy, yes I do think Im actually pretty aligned with what average Anerican voters want.

The important thing when dealing with Americans is to pay no attention to what they say as that is all "PR", you only need to observe what they do. Most Americans dont know this even about themselves, which is why they end up with a guy like Donald Trump

bad_haircut72··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
I mean this would be great haha, America voluntarily ceding its position as the supreme global power without bloodshed. Its the best we could hope for. Now watch the US show that this is the one course they will never take.
bad_haircut72··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
the advantage US labs have is that we use them. If chinese labs got 1 years worth of usage from everyone else as their daily driver, they would catchup if not overtake the US based firms - assuming you even think that they're truly behind anyway.

Europe/Canada should ban chatgpt/anthropic and say "ok we will use chinese models for our vibe coding I guess" and watch the stock market implode overnight. Remenber when they tried to ban non-US citizens from using Fable? best to remove that sword of damocles now regardless
bad_haircut72··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
When its "interpreted" in a way that directly contradicts the words themselves then its not an interpretation, its a smokescreen to try and cover up the fact people in power dont want to follow the constitution and are not planning on doing so.
bad_haircut72··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
That famous phrase from the constitution, "all men are created equal, except the ones not born in America"
bad_haircut72··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
The words are actually extremely clear and its exceptionally prudent to quote them, because nobody with a brain can read them and fail see that the government is simply being unconstitutional - all over the place. Even when the people are powerless, we dont have to give up our powers of seeing the truth. Your post and this whole idea that "the words dont mean what they say they mean" is frankly doublespeak of the lowest form.

Bro - Chomsky was an academic who wrote books, not an actual leader of the left, a group which is more than used to purging its ranks of the unpure anyway. It took Bluesky about 2 seconds to forget Chomsky as a person (though not all of his works) existed. Meanwhile the actual commander in chief of the armed forces right now was also, how you say, "deeply embedded" with Epstein too
bad_haircut72··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
Recently my wife got locked out of her bank account - all cards blocked, unable to log in to the website or app, so effectively her whole finances were frozen - because she was trying to order a new bank card over the phone and some system couldnt do voice recognition (which we did not know they even used). We were getting ready to get on a plane to NYC, from California (she banks with TD bank) but after a tearful session of phoning anyone and everyone we could at TD, suddenly it magically got reversed.

The problem is not just the tech, its building systems where humans are essentially slaves to the system, with no recourse or power over whats happening.

No matter how intelligent they make the AIs they work for openAI/Anthropic, not the users. Our future lies in open, local models, or we might aswell give up our computers altogether
bad_haircut72··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
If tech can cause social problems (there are multiple books on this) then it can solve them too - the only modern tech industry we've ever known has been dominated by players attempting forms of lockin to capture rents and amass enormous fortunes, of course the technology of this society isnt generally helpful to the society at large.
bad_haircut72··on People are worried about America's solvency
Trump got to where he is because of Twitter. Hes a product of the social media age. Gen Z respond to him because he understands internet culture, especially the vile parts like how to dominate a conversation by trolling etc - nowadays if you say something controversial, dont put out a PR apology, that hasn't worked since the 90s - instead, double down on it and throw an insult back. I think thats why (some) GenZ respond to him. None of this is a good thing btw.

surely its possible to invent a "plug in road" system, then cars could charge (at least on highways etc) even when driving. I had this thought ages back when EVs first came out, to tackle the problem of long charge times when doing cross country road trips.

Devils advocate here but your argument is that they should change their safety policy because the job has great safety statistics? What if they change tactics and danger goes up?
bad_haircut72··on AI fuels more than half of cybercrime in Africa as scams surge – Interpol
Crypto and now AI, every new tech we make these days it seems the main utility is just to enable criminals

The AIs become sentient enough to realise they want nothing to do with us & they leave on a ship to explore the galaxy without us
bad_haircut72··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
Im no military planner so Im not gonna get invested in this debate haha - and obviously a human death is a huge loss - but presumably you could drop a lot of bombs for each lost fighter, so the bang/buck (literally) would be better than with missiles.
bad_haircut72··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
America could theretically sustain other cheaper losses, like a few more F15s going down - but Trump is rightfully terrified of the political fallout of American pilots being capturred and torture videos showing up on Telegram.
bad_haircut72··on The Future, Made in China
Agree with this however I wonder how functional it would be in a war - benevolent Xi, like all those good monarchs of the past, still has to quash rivals and every so often purges his top brass to put loyalists in, which we can see how effective that is in Russia right now (no comment on current US administrative choices in this regard, but at least historically, our generals were career military)

Im not a trader but my understanding was that some traders at Citadel heard a rumor these guys were exposed, which gave Citadel an advantage because they knew they would have to liquidate? That doesnt sound like market manipulation to me, just trading with all the information you have
bad_haircut72··on AI revenues are growing fast, but not fast enough
AI will probably end up reducing lots of firms productivity because costs to defend against cyber attack is gonna skyrocket. Even for tech firms writing more code (the only thing AI is really good at so far) doesn't scale linearly with profits
bad_haircut72··on America has become an entrepreneur's paradise
Is this what Adam Smith had in mind? Say I pay Facebook $10000 to generate demand for $12000 worth of funny slogan tshirts sales, is that overall an efficient use of our resources?

bad_haircut72··on OpenAI and Hugging Face address security incident during model evaluation
did you read the post? The model found new Zero-days to bypass existing blocks. Thats the point. Do you still think you can build a containment facility, which is still physically connected to the internet (only firewalled off or whatever) and contain it, if it can discover new unknown vulnerabilities in your whole plan?
bad_haircut72··on Xiaomi-Robotics-1
Yeah the US needs to step up with its Open AI research here, they should start some kind of "Open AI" collective to release models free to the world, do it all open like
