babeKnuth··on Some advice on teaching FP
What concept(s) did the students find hardest to grasp? What areas do you think more time should be spent on when teaching it? Thnx in advance.
babeKnuth··on Which programming language is the best for programming beginner?
Zed also offers online instruction/classes. Cool guy too.
babeKnuth··on Which programming language is the best for programming beginner?
Ironically, this response is VERY similar to the confusing verbosity of most programming languages. :) In Python, you would just say:

Python

(NOTE: I do appreciate the thoughtful and detailed response. I was mainly illustrating a point for Python as an excellent programming language for novices.)

babeKnuth··on Which programming language is the best for programming beginner?
I find Python the easiest for non-programmers to learn. Less things to account for (syntax, conventions, etc.). Allows people to be very direct with what they want their program to achieve.
babeKnuth··on Some advice on teaching FP
"One beautiful feature of the language-based approach is that we start with a very familiar model of computation, the evaluation of polynomials over the reals. It’s very familiar for all students, and I think they find it very satisfying precisely because it has a direct computational flavor."

Don't know how true this is at other universities, but this doesn't sound like my experience at all. :)

Oddly enough, I'll be TAing an identical class this summer. Any quick tips or advice? (I'll probably also send you a message later as well). Thanks.

if i don't buy the bundle that i don't want in the first place then i don't have to worry about the troubles with a refund.

fuck no.
babeKnuth··on [dead]
fuck yeah. best website i've seen in a while.
babeKnuth··on Poll: How often do you use Reddit?
agreed. i avoid the frontpage, but keep track of a few subreddits.
babeKnuth··on Graduated with a Major in Startups
i agree with most of what you say, but i think a key is more balance between the two. not purely "real world", and not strictly "academic world". somewhere in between.
babeKnuth··on Graduated with a Major in Startups
well said. i didn't think of that perspective.

my own experience was more along the lines of feeling a disconnect between classwork and how it applied to the real world.

it would also tend to probably attract those profs/instructors that are more "aware" of what's out there. they (typically) tend to be the better instructors as well.
babeKnuth··on A Duck & a Wiki Team Up Against the Content Farms
he's apparently used duckduckgo. i can recognize it from a mile away because the stalking/wow factor that all us users experience after using it seems to have also bit him. :)
babeKnuth··on A Duck & a Wiki Team Up Against the Content Farms
yr a worse ddg fanboy than me :P
babeKnuth··on A Duck & a Wiki Team Up Against the Content Farms
their market share may be laughable, but that still doesn't eliminate the fact that many knowledgeable people prefer either blekko or duckduckgo over google.

it can definitely be viewed as a "calm before the storm". or if you're familiar with gentrification, the "cool cats" are living on this side of town.

babeKnuth··on A Duck & a Wiki Team Up Against the Content Farms
amen brother.
babeKnuth··on Ask HN: What do you use to organize e-books and research papers?
I've been using this for the past 4 years. They've got a nice iPad app that includes highlighting, but unfortunately their desktop app can't handle highlighting yet. :(

Their priorities are a bit backward. The desktop app has been surpassed by almost all other competitors mentioned here. Sad. Used to be great.

I would rather not be stalked and have all my personal and private information available to people trying to sell me crap I don't want or need.

I'd rather see no advertisements.

babeKnuth··on Mouseless Browsing in Firefox with Pentadactyl
are you using something else that is faster (for comparison)?

are you on a netbook? low on RAM? everything feels fairly responsive on my end.

babeKnuth··on Mouseless Browsing in Firefox with Pentadactyl
it is mentioned.

"pentadactyl".

:)

babeKnuth··on Mouseless Browsing in Firefox with Pentadactyl
where? the "command...." entries? those are basically javascript bookmarklets that are typically installed in your bookmarklets bar, but have now been assigned their own command. e.g., just type

:postToPinboard

when you want to bookmark the current page.

babeKnuth··on Mouseless Browsing in Firefox with Pentadactyl
the "let" assignments have been deprecated, but i believe should still work nonetheless.
babeKnuth··on Mouseless Browsing in Firefox with Pentadactyl
no, that's something i'm actually starting to get sick of with most native mac apps: it's mandatory to use modifier keys.

:(

single key has been my new favorite "minimalist" feature to use on the mac.

i'm an emacs user, but i still recommend pentadactyl. you don't need that many keyboard chords for browsing the porn.
