babayega2··on Why we built yet another Postgres connection pooler
Is there a pooler handling schema switching in PostgreSQL? like something in front of django-tenant ?
babayega2··on Wolfram Compute Services
Maxima is the clone. I remember using it 20 years ago. very nice.
babayega2··on Boycott IETF 127
But it is in the Schengen area. I have a 1 year Schengen visa and I have been going there regularly without problem.
babayega2··on DeepFace: A lightweight deep face recognition library for Python
Very nice package. I used it recently for a project where I needed to detect faces in images as tasks with celery [0]. I wonder if there is an equivalent for OCR.

babayega2··on Ask HN: Local Mac Wysiwyg HTML Editor? (for “Lo-fi” website)
One of the open source wysiwyg editors I have been trying to use is BlueGriffon. It does what you want. But it hasn't been updated for a while. I remember codeigniter soe something like that used to do that back in 2010s.
babayega2··on Jailer, a unique open-source database tool
It took them time. I had asked the same problem few months ago [0]. I needed a tool to subset a huge PostgreSQL db. The choices where Condenser [1] and this Jailer. Since I'm not a Java guy, I was struggling to know how to properly run this Jailer. I'm glad they released a .deb format. But I ended up using Condenser.

babayega2··on TV series about startup failures
One of the funny/sad consequences of watching Silicon Valley, is that a lot of my friends (in my African country where only 4% has electricity) think that the startup need to expand no matter what, even if it has no viable business model, you can run a "budgetivore" business for many years like Linkedin/Amazon and in the end you will find a business model.

So imagine. Instead of building good and sound startups that can be champions in the country/region, they waste the meager resources available in the country on fake startups/crypto-scams.

Sad.

babayega2··on Ask HN: Is it time for a new Storybook?
Coupled with DOMPurify [0], it helps much to simplify the messy JavaScript, HTML. Yin [1] has book on that.

babayega2··on Francis Fukuyama – Against Identity Politics
Eric Li, from China has a big take on that: the West thinkers, including Fukuyama, stopped thinking since they assumed history was written. No more authoritarian state would outperform a liberal one. Apparently history is still being written.
babayega2··on Simple Raspberry Pi Powered SMS Gateway
5 years ago, I built the same SMS gateway without using the AT command "Explicitly" [0], but by letting Kannel handle that for me. Thus, I had an endpoint generally usable. Kannel is still used by Mobile Network Operators in Africa.

babayega2··on Spending $5k to learn how database indexes work
My experience is that on AWS there are hidden costs. Paying for traffic, and other stuff.
babayega2··on Spending $5k to learn how database indexes work
That's why we use DigitalOcean a lot in Africa. You know upfront how much you will spend.
babayega2··on An unprecedented wave of online bank fraud is hitting Britain
This is a good feature. I'm enjoying it actually.
babayega2··on Ask HN: Did somebody have success with the migration of Python 2.7 to Java/C#?
From my advice, try to stay on Python.

I am currently doing the opposite. Moving an old Java stack to Python/Django. Been able to do so under 9 months. I think upgrading to Python 3 should be doable. What's the version of your Django stack? You just need to try to reach Django 2.2. And if you are at Django 1.1, 90% of your code can be upgraded to Python 3. Nothing fancy. You just need to use libraries such as pyupgrade [0] to automatically upgrade your code, combined with black [1], flake [2],... Everything is done in less than 20 commits. From there you jump to 2.2 which supports Python 3.6+ .

It will be very difficult to implement all the goodies given by Django ORM/SQLAlchemy. But ... You if Java/C# is the tech that you feel confortable with, no problem. You have to use it. But, I really think it's easier to understand the "business domain" of Python code than Java/C#.

babayega2··on Full WireGuard Support in ProtonVPN for Android
Absolutely. I will migrate to it ASAP since my Streisand is mired in 16.04. good job guys from Algo.
babayega2··on An unprecedented wave of online bank fraud is hitting Britain
Two days ago, I purchased a subscription online and my bank app thought it was a security incident, blocked the transaction and discarded the online virtual card I was using, informed me about the whole process and asked me to create another virtual card to replace all my other 6 subscriptions that were linked to the now defunct card.

I'm discovering Revolut.

babayega2··on Full WireGuard Support in ProtonVPN for Android
3 years ago I installed Project Streisand [0] on one of my Digitaocean droplets which configured automatically different VPN protocols and my favorite one has been Wireguard. To this day I still use it on all my devices and it's only last month that I was made aware that the project has been discontinued (Why??). But my Wireguard VPN is still kicking. Works like a charm. On all devices. I can use restricted apps in Africa where my bank app and Disney plus/HBO do not works...

babayega2··on ExpressVPN employees complain about ex-spy's top role at company
True. I use VPN to get behind the geoblocking on my banking app which is prohibited to work in my African country. Also viewing movies banned in my country.
babayega2··on Black barbers have become mental health advocates for African American men
Exactly.

And when you have your special barber, he would cut your hair even when you have no money. That's another assumption a lot of non-black peoples do not know.

I'm black African. I went to live in Rome (Italy) and went 3 times in a "normal" barber shop and the Italians were just doing the haircuts as it is required by their jobs and talking about moundane things. I joined the conversation but ... They are professional. They don't have time to talk about personal problem and stuff. This is not the place.

I switched to a black barbershop and, just near Termini train station. Man, the first day I was there the barber told me and asked me personal stuff and it wasn't "unprofessional" in my view.

We bonded. And now he even call me to ask me how if a problem I have told him previously is solved yet, he has a plumber who can help me fix things and stuff...

So in our culture barbers are well respected.

babayega2··on Activision Blizzard Sued Over ‘Frat Boy’ Culture, Harassment
Job seekers in game development are many. These companies will never lack developers.
babayega2··on Rapid Prototyping with Django, Htmx, and Tailwind CSS
Awesome way to combine Tailwind and Django. I wonder what's your recommendation is someone wants to build the backend in Django and the front in any js they want... Say Angular and use only Django templates. What the best approach?
babayega2··on Open source food ordering platform

babayega2··on Peter Thiel turned a Roth IRA into a $5B tax-free piggy bank
I have lived in 4 countries, and 3 continents and everyone I have lived with agreed that it's not useful for the whole family to know how much you make.

Last year I learned that lesson the hard way...

babayega2··on China allows couples to have three children
Absolutely! We have been doing so for the last 20 years. Reducing child mortality at the fastest rate in East Africa. Women education is one of our top achievement from those years. Urbanization and industrialization is the only thing that's coming slow.

Life is still not so expensive for the families (essentially men) are still having more babies than they can afford to nurture!

It's a pity to watch.

babayega2··on China allows couples to have three children
I totally understand you. Peoples come in here and just go on criticize policies because they don't know the reality of living in an overpopulated country with limited ressources.

In Africa, Burundi, my country of 28km2, we have more than 90% of the litigations in the courts about land and properties. Siblings kill each other for land! We have 5.4 children/woman. One of the biggest natality rate in Africa. Only surpassed by Niger! We have American evangelical coming in scaring peoples to do abortions and contraception! We can't even talk about sterilization! With population density of more than 450 peoples by the km2.

Primary School is free and children get free healthcare till 5 years of age. It means that those 5.4 children per woman are likely to live and multiply!

What do you think we need to do?

I can only imagine how Chinese peoples did projections and saw that by the end of the century they would be half the world population without half the ressources and took drastic measures!

babayega2··on Vietnam War images from the North Vietnamese side
All my friends are moving to Canada. I intend to go there and buy an apartment for my children next year. USA is not more the dream country to emigrate to.
babayega2··on TSMC looks to double down on U.S. chip factories as talks in Europe falter
I was raised and taught to think in a liberal way. The American way. That America guarantee the free trade of goods and "American peace" (with toppling governments it doesn't want!) and no other country needs to build huge armies as long as they follow the "American rule of law". This has led to a long period of "worldwide peace" ( No peace thaugh! since American's president didn't bother to lift his finger to stop my ancestors being slaughtered because... we are not strategic!).

Then Trump passed by and showed "us" that really, American needs to think about itself beforehand. like build its crumbling highways before coming to build Africa highways in order to counter China.

Now I see China has lifted more than 700M peoples out of poverty without firing a single shot and not interfering blatantly in our politics ( Well... lol. They provided arms to all the warring factions in my country... they let us fight, because we were stupid.).

And more importantly China tells me it has a new order where countries [Westerners that have been colonizing us... Seen French colonies?] respect sovereignty of each other and has money to build me highways in exchange of raw materials and stuff [it is recycling the surplus of USD gained trading with USA!!!].

And I might have a say in the new order.

So what do you think I might chose ? As an African citizen ?

babayega2··on TSMC looks to double down on U.S. chip factories as talks in Europe falter
I work with some UN and Bretton Woods institutions lending money to Africa and I can tell you that IMF/WB are also lending us money. They take "your hard earned savings" and come in here and invest her so that they can make future profits and grow the saving funds. If USA give you his money, as head of state you need to understand that it is not for the joy of it but that money need to yield interest or you will be toppled. This is not your money, it's American Savings! China is doing the same, just blatantly and with the bashing for the west.

[We] see you two .

babayega2··on TSMC looks to double down on U.S. chip factories as talks in Europe falter
The Nikkei has a detailed article [0] on the steps that China is taking to compete with TSMC and other western chip factories. I think a lot of commenters would be meaningful if they took time to read the other side of the problem and not just run into nationalist and inflammatory war.

babayega2··on TSMC looks to double down on U.S. chip factories as talks in Europe falter
As someone from Africa with knowledge of USA involvement in toppling some governments here, I sometimes wonder who's worst? A country I know for certain it has invaded unilaterally others (USA) or a country with potential of one day in the future for invading countries (China).
