baash05··on Ask HN: Has anyone here used HackerRank?
I've been subjected to it a few times, and now if it's part of the hiring process I tell the hiring manager I'm not interested. It's a waste of my time. (Many mates do the same)

I've found the questions to be too algorithm centric, which does not really represent my day to day. A fresh Uni grad might do well, but as a coder with over 20 years in, the problems are too generic or jargon filled.

Also solving problems IRL allows for google searches, and chatting with co-workers. If I can find an answer on SO that is close to my issue, I save the company money, by not rolling my own.

So. If you're looking for Uni grads, sure. If you're looking for experienced dev's it's a great way to get a pile of "Nah. I'll pass."

baash05··on Back end developers on hackathons are not needed
I had a manager offer to put on a work hackathon. It was going to be 24 hours of design and code. I figured it would be fun, even if we were building something for the company, free reign micro project would be cool.. We ended up spending the time building something management wanted, and then playing poker. (I don't gamble so I was rather miffed) In the end, I think we spent about 4 hours coding up something the bosses wanted.
baash05··on Books that changed my career as a software engineer
Clean code... To this day I cringe when I see methods/functions over 20 lines long.. Or when I see commented code blocks in one function..

Other have mentioned The Mythical Man Month, and I'd say it's a great book. Sadly, more often than not, it's something I wish I could staple to managements foreheads. "read this now before our next planning session"

The Rspec book was a great book, that helped me fully embrace TDD, and this has led to more sleep filled nights than I had a right to before its consumption.

1984... This one terrified me so much, that I have to include it. I write code much more securely because of it.

Strange in a Strange Land. If only because I learned what GROK means.

baash05··on Books that changed my career as a software engineer
I'd argue that you have near 100% control over the work/office culture of your employer. You have 100% control over who you work for, so you can control the office culture you work in. It's a 1 to 1 relationship. If during an interview they say.. "3 days in the office" you counter with "how about zero?" They say "The best we can do is 2", you again counter with "Zero works for me." Don't take the job.
baash05··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
I remember VS 2000.. That was a game changer as an IDE for me. Though yeah borland c++ was great too. Even metroworks for palm. Back when IDE's did their job, out of the box.
baash05··on Ruby vs. Python comes down to the for loop
Yeah.. totally.. 10 years, I've never seen a custom 'each'
baash05··on Ruby vs. Python comes down to the for loop
I'd add elixir to that list too. For the most part, the language differences are not really capitalised on.
baash05··on The popularity of e-bikes isn’t slowing down
When you're hit by a car, or passed by a bus, you realise quickly that it's your job. Because someone has to do the job, or you die.

They should, but OMG cars don't

baash05··on Ask HN: Is nuclear power a practical short term solution to climate change?
I've not had an electric bill this year. My panels make way more than I use. I'm cool with them.
baash05··on Why Don’t Rich People Just Stop Working? (2019)
You can fire customers.. I've done it a few times.
baash05··on How learned helplessness happens in engineering teams
Totally agree.. As a rails dev I'm asked to dig into ops.. Not once is the JS team asked to build out the rails code, or fix things in it when it glitches. The api business logic falls down, and thats on me.

But when ops is glitchy, I have to blow half my day faking interest in docker? I mean best case, I learn how ops works, and then what. I become the one they tap when ops is swamped, then before I know it, I'm doing ops.

And I quit, because as much as I love the ops team, I hate the gig. I'd hate to be a designer, or a BA. It's not where I find joy.

So when I hear people say.. Just follow these steps to trouble shoot, I wonder if it would be cool to tell that to our users..

baash05··on A Love Letter to Ruby and Rails
I have to say that as a rails dev I've never found there to be a lack of documentation. Not if there's even a little bit of a PR process in place. Rails in general is a huge proponent of test, then code. The tests are the documentation. They tell you what params methods take, and what the output should be.

I'll admit I've never worked on a team over 100, but I have worked on older code bases.

When we found bugs, we wrote new tests to cover the edge case.

Also if someone had "input" as a variable name for a public method, and that made it into main, that's a failing of the PR process.

Most of the complaints here could be replicated in almost any language. In a c++ project I worked on in the 2000's I had a dev create a function void rct(int data). I (as lead) made him rename both the function and the param.

baash05··on A Love Letter to Ruby and Rails
100% agree.. If the services/jobs are focused, then even massive projects can be held in your head. And these can be built out if they're not there, so they can be the road to recovery
baash05··on A Love Letter to Ruby and Rails
For me that eco system is worth so much. I find the docs in elixir so sparse, and often land on rails docs because google can't find enough to fill a page. - SO is the same, I get rails answers. Active Jobs make background tasks so insanely easy.

I find with elixir I'm adding a lot of boiler plate.

baash05··on Privacy Is a Human Right
CovidSafe begs to differ
baash05··on Ask HN: What is the best programming book you've read?
"Clean code" is a top contender.
baash05··on Copyright claims on YouTube Bach videos
If they're a public space, then you should have that right. If they're a publisher then yeah agree.

I think a case could be made that they have to pick a lane.

baash05··on What will programming look like in 2029?
I'd say much the same as it is today. If I think how much it's changed in 10 years, it doesn't feel all that different. I'm still writing ruby most days. The focus will switch to even more web based. Likely more security though.
baash05··on No, we won’t have a video call for that
But you can do that in text too. I mean if it's wall of text dump, no; but if people keep their chat blocks short, then it's a two way convo. (or more)
baash05··on No, we won’t have a video call for that
Personally, I like having chat's with my mates, over vids. I can chat with them async too. I don't need to see them to hear their voice in text.
baash05··on Ask HN: If you could build an OS for software dev, what would it look like?
Yeah. And what does "programmer mean". Python, c++, java, css? Am I coding for windows? Then I'd need a windows box. Iphone? -> Mac, ....

Also what about preferences. I work on a team with 20 devs.. some of us use Vim to edit files. Other use VS code or Atom. Still others use emacs.

baash05··on Ask HN: Are batch endpoints a good pattern in REST APIs?
I think it's all right. You could even accept csv's to do this thing. For the post or update it would be resource/import
baash05··on Want to work 9-to-5? Good luck building a career
I loved the bit about a project being due on Monday, and that means I should work on the weekend. If the project is due on Monday then weeks before it should be ready to go. If it's not done Monday, descope, or push the deadline.
baash05··on Ask HN: Do you have a browser-based personal knowledge management system?
github projects and wiki.
baash05··on Are Vegan-Only Job Adverts Discriminatory?
Sure.. but not illegally so. I mean a job advert for a programmer would discriminate against people who couldn't, or don't believe in the practices of the company.
baash05··on An Open Letter Against Apple's Privacy-Invasive Content Scanning Technology
Leave the phone at home. That's a technical solution to the police in your pocket.
baash05··on Millions of student loan borrowers don't have a diploma to show for their debt
So we're cool with Peer pressure made me do it? I mean that's okay I suppose. But every time I've done something for peer pressure, I've had to pay for it myself. Still the debt was on me.

I'd say about half the kids I work with have no degree. They're Javascript devs or designers and they are sharp as tacks. I guess it depends on the industry, but for software devs, it's becoming less and less important.

baash05··on Millions of student loan borrowers don't have a diploma to show for their debt
But aren't these debts self imposed? I paid mine off in 12 years, and never once worked in the field. My degree has helped me very little in the 20 years since..

But the decision to get incur the debt was mine and mine alone. I can't blame the school for making me pay for something I not only asked for but prayed for.

You own the debt.

baash05··on Ask HN: Do you agree with Covid passports?
Don't forget the real tax cost of setting it up. Millions on millions. On something that might, sort of do something? 20 new hospitals or a covid passport?
baash05··on Ask HN: Do you agree with Covid passports?
So your PCR score indicates you've had the shot and you're immune to the strain you've had. And that means nothing really. You can still catch and transmit other strains. So sure it tells people they won't die of X but Y and Z are still on the table. So are A, B and C. (again according to Fauci)

Also. Uniform? Countries can't agree on how they present dates and numbers. 1.000,00. How many meetings would it take to agree on a Uniform passport that would work internationally. How much would it cost to set up a commission to sort that out.

What about fake passports? Would there be a database? Who would build that? Who would be able to add to it? What security measure would be in place to protect the private medical data of the people?

How much would it cost?

Now given the cost (lets get real millions upon millions) and that the eventual document would be nearly worthless (because of strains). I'm a solid nope on this..

Much better use of tax dollars. Make masks with American flags on them. (or country of your choice). Print these by the millions, and give them out for free.
