baash05··on Ask HN: Can we just agree on showing HTML without requiring JavaScript?
Takes time and dev's aren't cheep. Best coder in the world has to feed their family. Best managers in the world have to feed their coders.

Devs and managers could. But (as a web dev) why bother.

- 1.7 percent of responding households reporting horse ownership (US) - should we call road builders bad at their job because we don't include horse friendly tracks. - Can you imagine a city manager asking for more horse friendly roads in your city? It's 1.7% after all.

baash05··on Ask HN: Can we just agree on showing HTML without requiring JavaScript?
But this holds only for static sites. News sites perhaps. Most sites (including this one) have user content. These can't be generated server side. (Partially yes)
baash05··on Ask HN: Can we just agree on showing HTML without requiring JavaScript?
Why bother? If a user comes to a page with JS off, they know why they get nothing.
baash05··on Ask HN: Can we just agree on showing HTML without requiring JavaScript?
It walls an increasing amount of the web off from a really small and ever decreasing amount of people.

I'd actually say it's good engineering.

If I engineer a small gas can (for filling my lawn mower) I can build one that holds a gallon, or one that holds 5 gallons. Now 2% of the population that owns lawn mowers have massive yards and riding mowers. So which one do I engineer? Which do I build. I build for the 98%

Optimist says cup is half full

Pessimist says cup is half empty

Engineer says cup is twice the size it has to be.

The reality. Building for the 2% just isn't an effective use of resources.

-- Oh oh.. I got a better one..

-- How many bridges in your home town have allowance for horses. Are all the bridge builders bad engineers?

2% that costs them 3% to earn is -1% profit.
baash05··on Ask HN: Can we just agree on showing HTML without requiring JavaScript?
> the drive to turn websites into revenue generators has had a corrosive effect

While I agree, there is the other side of that. They are very very expensive. Even a simple site needs servers, and devs.

> More info is better.

For who? If I tell the 2% of people out there that I sell these awesome things and they attempt to purchase them, but they can't because they have JS off, who did that knowledge help?

Now if it cost me 10k to tell the 2% they're waisting their time here, I'm out 10k and they're no better off than when they got a blank page.

baash05··on More and more workers say they'll quit if companies end work-from-home option
Let's look at it from a practical POV.

From a managers POV. - 0$ on rent - 0$ on electricity - 0$ on heating

From a workers POV. - 0$ on gas - 0$ on public transit - Less money on food - Less money on coffee - More time with family - 0 time in traffic

From an environmental POV - Less cars on the road

From a city POV - Less wear on the road - Less traffic accidents - Less traffic fatalities - Less money on public transit - Potential for more local businesses.

baash05··on Ask HN: Best Toolchain for Personal Website
Rails + heroku. Most likely don't need much javascript (unless your users will be moving things around) Likely under a few hours to get something simple up

Wordpress or blogger still work though.

baash05··on Ask HN: How to let SaaS customers pay for new features?
It sort of depends on how much they're offering. Hiring contractors to build features might be an option. (As someone who's been freelance it's rather common practice)

An alternative is to spawn a new UX to the app... Be careful here. At one place I worked we spawned a different private version of our app that made it possible for big clients to whitebox. We called the team "commercial". Different UX, different pricing for users of the different UX. It worked rather well. They paid for the changes to the UX for their "white box".

Where we went wrong. We should have called them markets. That is my one bit of advice. Call the different UX a different market.

Then you get something for free. You get to go international. Instead of just "Wallmart" being a market, and "Target" being a market. (with different language, different fonts, and different assets (including emails). You GET UK being a market, and Sydney being a market, and ...

If you do it right, you have a pattern for building things for different business, and different geography. Win win.

Final cheat code.

If you eventually plan on breaking your database into many different DB's don't go fancy on the user_ids. Just change the sequence to increment the ids by 100, instead of 1, and all users built in region/market 0 get n00, while users built in region/market 1 get n01, and so on. It's not so you know where the user was built, it's to guarantee uniqueness of the ID. It's a pile easier than changing your whole system to UUID's.

baash05··on Earn-IT threatens encryption and therefore user freedom
But I'd assume that license wouldn't be an easy thing to get. So it would be rich companies getting it.

It would price innovation out of the market.

Also, not sure what you mean by weak encryption. An average attacker now has access to decrypting tools out of the box (with a few Linux distros) so wep isn't stopping anyone really. Even noobs can be trained to crack with an hour of youtube.

baash05··on Earn-IT threatens encryption and therefore user freedom
Shot in the dark here? Which Government are you talking about? Saudi? Where being gay is a death sentence? No? How about the US where being Japanese was illegal? China's got the most people, perhaps we take a wold wide vote to see? Biggest land mass? Millionaires per population (the 1%)?

Who would control the creation of the keys? I mean which tech vender would control access to my android phones encryption? My phone was made in China, and the chips inside it were made in China. They also have the most people, so it seems fair they control the keys.

baash05··on Ask HN: Are there “regular” SWE jobs that pay $200k+?
I second that.

I've worked for many companies whose goal was not to make a profit, but instead to make the world better for one group of people.

They did profit, but that was really just so they could afford to continue to help their target audience.

I've never really understood the anger toward share holders. Most people have a pension, and that's invested in the stock market. When people say "share holders" I think of teachers pensions, and nurses pensions, my welders-widow grand mother. The "share holders" are people.

RE tax.. I can't think of a better way to light money on fire. Australia recently spent nearly 100million on a Covid safe app that tracked people. It was an utter flop, and I'm not sure it tacked down even one person. 100 Million $ on a 100% predictable flop.

baash05··on GE won’t let me use convection roast on my new oven without connecting to WiFi
True.. but in todays supply chain issues, you might not get that house done for a long long time.

I purchased a built house, six months after my neighbour. I was in 2 days after close. I took the stove and dishwasher the builder picked.

My neighbour has been waiting for 2 years now. Still not able to move in. Many of the places near me broke ground a year ago, and some still have no walls.

baash05··on Poll: Why do you want to work at FAANG?
Good follow up.. Why wouldn't you want to work at a FAANG..

- 1. I'd be a number

- 2. I don't believe any of them have a mission.

- 3. I think the hiring tests are really silly.

- 4. FAANG's burn their staff out.

- 5. The Perks don't mean much to me.

baash05··on Ask HN: Is it possible to become a language agnostic programmer?
I'd say it goes beyond well documented though. .

Like in rails if I want to add authentication, I drop in devise, and in 30 minutes I have a fully tested user auth system, complete with password locking and reset mechanics.

Yes I could write it myself, but I'd not typically do that. No amount of docs on the language get that kind of boost in productivity.

In elixir I could write a fully functional integration with Kafka, but Broadway already does that. The docs on the language don't get me knowledge of all the libraries out there. That's just Time in and good co-workers. (great ones really)

baash05··on Ask HN: Is it possible to become a language agnostic programmer?
But what language would you write it in.

I started a contracting job a few years ago where they were transition the team from Java to Rails. Every bit of the code "tasted" like java.

What a rails dev would do in 2 lines took them a full page of code. (No fault of theirs-- they were all excellent devs)

baash05··on Ask HN: Is it possible to become a language agnostic programmer?
No.

The answer is no.

"A language that doesn't affect the way you think about programming, is not worth knowing." -- Alan Perlis

The way you handle a problem is affected by the languages you speak. An elixir programmer would think in functions and modules and gen-servers. A rails dev would think in objects and jobs.

It's not so much a favourite language thing. I mean english isn't my fav spoken language. It's the one I grew up using and thinking in.

When I started working in Ruby/Rails I wrote c++ code with ruby syntax. When years later, I wrote Elixir, it "sounded" like ruby. (still does really).

There is no way to know the full stack. Not really. One can have a working knowledge of it, (and that's awesome in start up mode), but really knowing an element of the stack takes study. Honestly it cheapens us to say otherwise.
