b_tterc_p··on XLOOKUP for Excel
It’s basically just index match with a sensible default for match’s matching argument.

Good stuff. Took too long to make an official implementation of this but glad it’s here

b_tterc_p··on The wisdom of never leaving your hotel room
Is this tongue in cheek? Because it reads as more worldly and self aware but is largely about living a more extravagant, expensive and luxurious lifestyle.
b_tterc_p··on Chasing the Whale: Examining the ethics of free-to-play games
I would peg it down to innumeracy and inability to handle relativism and anchored valuations.

I would wager the same people who become whales are merely the same who would overspend on traditional sales periods for physical stores.

b_tterc_p··on Show HN: Real world (Jupyter notebook embed) way to assess data scientists
I think this is good as a way to filter people out, but not as a way to rank people to find the best.

I would want to see a short script to clean and predict a dataset, plus a small description of why choices were made.

Wouldn’t care much about the performance of the model.

b_tterc_p··on [dead]
You may feel differently if your crime is “political dissidence” and you’re now facing a mainland China trial instead of a Hong Kong trial.

Extradition basically gives China judicial authority over whatever they want in Hong Kong

b_tterc_p··on Germany in Uproar as Negative Rates Threaten Saving Obsession
This mindset is why I think negative rates are going to mess things up. People aren’t going to behave rationally. If you want to save the rational choice in this situation is to accept a small negative rate that is secure although slightly negative. But... a lot of people are probably going to do one of your two ideas. Neither of which are really “good” for the economy.
b_tterc_p··on Ann Nelson Took on the Biggest Problems in Physics
Is someone a great physicist if they produce 0 papers but reduce stigma in STEM
b_tterc_p··on India school-leaving exam: A controversy that cost 23 lives
I don’t understand how these ideas can mix. If schools are super competitive and the good economic opportunities go to only the top x%, where x is smallish, then most people do not get x. I can’t see it being suicidally bad if this the most common outcome.

What do people do if they don’t succeed?

b_tterc_p··on An underground Facebook market for rare meat
It’s more than possible for non-living but still harmful substances/chemicals to be on the floor.
b_tterc_p··on Meeting online has become the most popular way U.S. couples connect: study
Why do you believe that the woman owes the man anything after ending the relationship? A woman is not obligated to feel emotionally conservative just because her former partner does.
b_tterc_p··on Meeting online has become the most popular way U.S. couples connect: study
I don’t have any way of comparing this beyond anecdotally but... I’ve dated one only person and for many years.

I’ve never had the chance or reason to use online dating. But I feel like most of my friends who do enter committed relationships from online dating don’t seem to trust each other very much even after a significant chunk of time and it seems weird to me. Curious if this resonates.

b_tterc_p··on Meeting online has become the most popular way U.S. couples connect: study
You’re subtly insinuating that the woman was being shallow or petty, when in fact, she could have just not wanted to move forward with the relationship.
b_tterc_p··on Popeyes Chicken Sandwich Is an Economic Indicator
Are wages really rising for the target market of Popeyes?
b_tterc_p··on German city offers $1.1M to whoever proves it doesn’t exist
I’m no philosopher but this sounds incorrect. You can prove that many things couldn’t exist, and therefore prove that it doesn’t exist.

Like an integer greater and less than 0.

b_tterc_p··on Yuan falls to 11-year low
Is it easy for blue collar Chinese to leave and work in other countries?
b_tterc_p··on The FCC has no idea how many people don’t have broadband access
We have excellent data on this
b_tterc_p··on The FCC has no idea how many people don’t have broadband access
Incorporate avg number of people per house...?
b_tterc_p··on Cryptic, allusive messages from Hong Kong's wealthiest tycoon
I could place it with only +- 15 years if I’m going to be honest.
b_tterc_p··on Cryptic, allusive messages from Hong Kong's wealthiest tycoon
Minor complaint about making minor complaints
b_tterc_p··on Cryptic, allusive messages from Hong Kong's wealthiest tycoon
> “everyone knows what 4 / 6 /89 signifies”

This annoyed me quite a bit. No I don’t. Most people probably don’t.

It’s the date of Tiananmen Square.

b_tterc_p··on Keanu Reeves will return as Neo in new ‘Matrix’ film
I’m fine with this. Keanu’s action movies tend to have action that is actually creative and enjoyable to watch. Most fight scenes are really quite boring, but I’m happy to watch John Wick kill people for a few hours.

The Matrix is a good setting for action films. I won’t care terribly if it lacks the philosophical or sci fi aspects

b_tterc_p··on General Electric: A Bigger Fraud Than Enron
Questionable revenue recognition timing vs fictitious revenues would be an example
b_tterc_p··on Elizabeth Warren Came Up with a Plan to Break Up Big Tech
Or they could just give stable dividends and stop growing which is honestly completely reasonable for a company that makes most of its money on super passive activities like google.

Google is growth oriented because it has so much money that it can experiment with things. Maybe that’s dumb?

b_tterc_p··on Time to Get Serious about Tick-Borne Diseases
I know people are concerned about using gene drives on native species, but why don’t we use it against invasive species. Lantern flies in PA seem like a good example.
b_tterc_p··on Juul, Philip Morris Sued Under Racketeer Act for Targeting Kids
Why is that a perverse incentive? If the baseline is that it’s illegal to sell such things to kids, then this seems like a roundabout way to hire kids as a forcing mechanism to make companies really careful not to do this.
b_tterc_p··on Schrödinger's Cat with 20 Qubits
This is a popular science and not very accurate version of how qubits work, no?
b_tterc_p··on Information operations directed at Hong Kong
Maybe one day our cyberpunk corporate overlords will be able to fine governments for this kind of shit.
b_tterc_p··on Kostroma Moose Farm
A moose is two to three times the mass of a red deer, or more. I’m not sure you can assume they’re similar.
b_tterc_p··on Résumés Are Starting to Look Like Instagram, and Sometimes Even Tinder
Unless... you don’t want to meet people who wouldn’t want to meet you due to knowing more about you
b_tterc_p··on Japan surpasses China as largest foreign holder of US Treasurys
Wouldn’t that deeply hurt the Chinese economy as their boost from their currency inflation goes away
