b20000··on Ask HN: Is it possible to make FAANG salaries without working there?
who is it?
b20000··on Ask HN: Is it possible to make FAANG salaries without working there?
BAML?
b20000··on (Opinion) Crypto mining is nonessential and is killing our climate
wait until the CBDC is implemented
b20000··on Ask HN: Any companies that are objectively trying to make the world better?
They can’t even fix their hiring process so never mind about fixing the world.
b20000··on Panic at the Job Market
not too sure about that. remember when zuckerburg etc met with obama? how much do we know about what was said?
b20000··on Panic at the Job Market
Pure speculation: what is the possibility the current administration told silicon valley to dial down hiring and salaries to help with inflation? the result being our job market has been destroyed. it would be worth investigating this.
b20000··on (Opinion) Crypto mining is nonessential and is killing our climate
I disagree, I think crypto is extremely important, much more important than social media for example, which has been shown to be toxic and to destroy people's health, on top of also requiring a lot of data center resources and thus being bad for the climate.
b20000··on Ask HN: How do you prepare for interviews?
it is unlikely that you know the answer to every question if what you do is reasonably complex or a large area of tech
b20000··on Ask HN: How do you prepare for interviews?
so you are basically saying that your past work doesn't matter and only whatever trick question is being asked matters
b20000··on Ask HN: What would it take to make a robot vacuum in the USA?
distribution of consumer electronics can mark up the price with 30%-50% and then the retailer adds another 30%-50%, and then the cost of transporation needs to be paid, there is the cost of storage, sales tax, etc etc

so a $1,000 MSRP consumer electronics item might need to be manufactured for a cost of $100-$200.

i think that if one wants to make products in the US, the cost of distribution and retail and transportation needs to be addressed, and it seems nobody wants to touch that hot potato

b20000··on Ask HN: What would it take to make a robot vacuum in the USA?
if this was entirely manufactured in the US the retail price would be $10,000
b20000··on Ask HN: Why does no one seem to care that AI gives wrong answers?
Because everyone incorrectly assumes there is intelligence at work and because people don't want to critically evaluate answers because that takes a lot of time to do.
b20000··on Ask HN: Anyone here burnt out of the AI hype?
Yes very much. I have the impression that some FAANG type companies have diverted resources/headcount to AI related roles while keeping the job openings around, which maybe means if you apply to a job, and it's not an AI job, you might never hear back. One person who used to work at one of these companies confirmed this to me, that resources have been put on AI and taken away elsewhere. What I'm also concerned about is that the idea is being sold that AI will replace software engineering and of course there are many companies who love that idea and will happily buy into it regardless of whether this will ever happen. This has the effect I think that many people will switch careers and after the AI thing blows over, there will be less talent around, or the talent will be AI focused and there will be a problem to find talent that can get the job done, whatever it is.
b20000··on Ask HN: Coding Ability Evaluations
You can ask candidates for a piece of code they've written in the past and discuss the code with them. That should be adequate.
b20000··on Ask HN: What were interviews like before Leetcode?
Yeah, I shouldn't have written that. The comment comes from a place of frustration with the interview process and my perceived cultural differences with how people who grew up in the US interview candidates and test whether they are a fraud or a bullshitter VS how people from other backgrounds interview. Too late to remove the comment now. My mistake.
b20000··on Ask HN: Coding Ability Evaluations
No.
b20000··on Ask HN: I was quoted €6K for CE certification
testing in china is not the same as testing in europe
b20000··on Ask HN: Favorite Home Office Purchase?
i thought office space was cheaper per sq ft
b20000··on When RAND made magic in Santa Monica
i thought xerox parc had lost its glamour and was being mismanaged by the parent company… maybe that was just a rumour
b20000··on Ask HN: What do you do if you hate your (large) code base
I could but will take work to do so. Maybe a few weeks. The code started with heavy OOP cuteness and ideas of globals = bad. When I was browsing the linux kernel code base I got a much better idea of how large code bases and systems can be organized.
b20000··on When RAND made magic in Santa Monica
what was the reason?
b20000··on Ask HN: AI hackday at work – what shall I work on?
are they paying you for the hours you participate in this? if not then you should not participate
b20000··on Ask HN: Is open sourcing your code still an option with the rise of AI?
I wonder what this means for SEO. If someone develops content and someone else then generates very similar content using AI, how do the search engines know who to rank higher?
b20000··on Ask HN: Is open sourcing your code still an option with the rise of AI?
the open source licenses are not provided along with the AI generated code, AFAIK
b20000··on Ask HN: Is open sourcing your code still an option with the rise of AI?
i think we are a very long way from that, there is no "intelligence", just advanced interpolation
b20000··on Ask HN: Is open sourcing your code still an option with the rise of AI?
i don't think anyone training AI models cares about any of that right now
b20000··on Ask HN: Is open sourcing your code still an option with the rise of AI?
and how are you going to be compensated when an AI model has been trained on it, and your code is spit out? and who will pay for the litigation?
b20000··on Ask HN: Favorite Home Office Purchase?
i have been thinking about this too… wondering whether an office + 1br apt is better than a 2br apt with one of the br used as office?
b20000··on Ask HN: AI impact on future developer career
why do you think LLMs will achieve actual intelligence and reasoning matching that of humans?
b20000··on Ask HN: AI impact on future developer career
i have seen no proof of actual reasoning or intelligence
