b00ty4breakfast··on Reaffirming our commitment to child safety in the face of EuropeanUnion inaction
"We are once again sending out checks to EU commissioners to get our handcrafted legislation put into law"
b00ty4breakfast··on Artemis II crew see first glimpse of far side of Moon [video]
> We can either hold ourselves back an an endless and futile journey on solving the human condition of poverty and inequality, or we can explore the stars. It's an easy choice.

"Sorry, poor people; but I want to live on Jupiter so you're just gonna have to starve to death".

What a loser

b00ty4breakfast··on Artemis II crew see first glimpse of far side of Moon [video]
it's amazing, but I'll refer you to Gil Scott-Heron for my feelings on the matter

A rat done bit my sister Nell
  With whitey on the moon
Her face and arms began to swell
  And whitey's on the moon
I can't pay no doctor bills
  But whitey's on the moon
Ten years from now I'll be payin' still
  While whitey's on the moon
The man just upped my rent last night
  Cause whitey's on the moon
No hot water, no toilets, no lights
  But whitey's on the moon
I wonder why he's upping me?
  Cause whitey's on the moon?
Well I was already giving him fifty a week
  With whitey on the moon
Taxes taking my whole damn check
Junkies making me a nervous wreck
The price of food is going up
And as if all that shit wasn't enough:
A rat done bit my sister Nell
  With whitey on the moon
Her face and arm began to swell
  And whitey's on the moon
Was all that money I made last year
  For whitey on the moon?
How come I ain't got no money here?
  Hmm! Whitey's on the moon
Y'know I just 'bout had my fill
  Of whitey on the moon
I think I'll send these doctor bills
  Airmail special
  To whitey on the moon
b00ty4breakfast··on Ubuntu now requires more RAM than Windows 11
RHEL is not the be-all end-all of minimalist linux, even sans GUI. Puppy Linux, with a full WM, is completely usable with a single gig of ram. That's obviously a different use-case from RHEL but the point stands.
b00ty4breakfast··on The threat is comfortable drift toward not understanding what you're doing
we have to look at what LLMs are and are not doing for this to be applicable; they are not "thinking", there is no real cognition going on inside an LLM. They are making statistical connections between data points in their training sets. Obviously, that has born some pretty interesting (and sometimes even useful) results but they are not doing anything that any reasonably informed person would call "intelligent" and certainly not "super intelligent".
b00ty4breakfast··on Ubuntu now requires more RAM than Windows 11
I won't stand for this erasure!
b00ty4breakfast··on The threat is comfortable drift toward not understanding what you're doing
>But there is also a more subtle thing, which is we're trending towards superintelligence with these AIs

do you have any evidence for that, though? Besides marketing claims, I mean.

b00ty4breakfast··on The threat is comfortable drift toward not understanding what you're doing
And just like modern vehicles rob the user of autonomy, so too for coding agents. Modern tech moves further and further away from empowering normal people and increasingly serves to grow the influence of corporations and governments over our day to day lives.

It's not inherent, but it is reality unless folks stop giving up agency for convenience. I'm not holding my breath.

b00ty4breakfast··on Iranian missile blitz takes down AWS data centers in Bahrain and Dubai
I guess it depends on if you were a Gibson fan or an Asimov fan as a teen
b00ty4breakfast··on Author of "Careless People" banned from saying anything negative about Meta
Are we shocked that a private entity, when given control of the public square, is using it's position to manipulate the discourse that goes in it's square? You think the quadspillion dollar megacorp is just going to let you criticize them?

The naivety in tech is downright embarrassing sometimes. This isn't the 90s or even the 2010s, we should know the lay of the land by now

b00ty4breakfast··on Author of "Careless People" banned from saying anything negative about Meta
I haven't read the book, but I don't think there's anything dishonest about needing distance to see the context of what she was a part of. Now, if she is trying to paint herself as completely outside of that even while she was knee-deep in it, that's a different matter but hindsight isn't something to be dismissed.
b00ty4breakfast··on Marc Andreessen is wrong about introspection
are you a guido from Long Island?
b00ty4breakfast··on Marc Andreessen is wrong about introspection
>This discussion is a sea of jealously and a perfect example.

Yes, the only reason anyone could have for criticizing the ultra-wealthy is jealousy. It's just the haders, b.

b00ty4breakfast··on Marc Andreessen is wrong about introspection
that's pretty rich coming from Tim "They're paying me enough to ignore slavery" Dillon.
b00ty4breakfast··on Samsung Magician disk utility takes 18 steps and two reboots to uninstall
this reminds me, I still have an ancient version of iTunes on my old win7 box because something got corrupted at some point and now I can't uninstall it.

Not being able to simply remove a program like you would any other program is next level evil in my book.

b00ty4breakfast··on New laws to make it easier to cancel subscriptions and get refunds
boy you almost got me, ha. I need to get off the internet
b00ty4breakfast··on New laws to make it easier to cancel subscriptions and get refunds
I use a similar service from a different provider. Having a different card for different merchants is useful in general.
b00ty4breakfast··on Random numbers, Persian code: A mysterious signal transfixes radio sleuths
who's to say they aren't doing both? They may not even be sending anything over the number station; these stations will continue on a schedule even when there is nothing to say and nobody is listening because it makes it harder to eek out a foothold in the event of a weakness in the encryption.
b00ty4breakfast··on Why the US Navy won't blast the Iranians and 'open' Strait of Hormuz
I think being the "home team" makes swallowing those casualties easier (as easy as they can be, anyways); it's easy to perceive the situation as a fight for your life.

Obviously, there were other things going on in Vietnam (and Afghanistan and the larger War on Terror) to keep them fighting but it's much easier to muster up the manpower when a war seems existential because it's happening in your neighborhood.

b00ty4breakfast··on Why the US Navy won't blast the Iranians and 'open' Strait of Hormuz
You can lose a game of chess to a guy with fewer and less powerful pieces than you if you play like a moron. The US has been playing the Iran situation like a gigantic moron.
b00ty4breakfast··on GitHub backs down, kills Copilot pull-request ads after backlash
the main pull of GitHub is not primarily git, which is easily done without an external provider. It's the bundle of all the little tools various other conveniences with git repositories, and how they're streamlined together into a workflow that many places are now beholden to. So they can afford to rough up the userbase a bit in the name of increased value extraction because so many paying customers are trapped in the GitHub ecosystem.
b00ty4breakfast··on GitHub backs down, kills Copilot pull-request ads after backlash
This is how these kinds of companies operate; push the limit until customers start complaining, then you back off a little bit. They've still advanced to that line, of course, but now the userbase can be conditioned for the next push so that "a little bit worse than before" feels normal.
b00ty4breakfast··on Philly courts will ban all smart eyeglasses starting next week
>But the bigger thing is: why would you want to get disqualified from one of your biggest civic duties?

because jury duty pays like 2 dollars an hour and I gotta eat. I know lots of folks on this website are relatively well off, but the entire country doesn't make 6 figures

b00ty4breakfast··on Copilot edited an ad into my PR
six of one, half dozen of the other; it may not be a payed advertisement but it functions as one if it's suggesting products.

It's not like this is organic word of mouth we're dealing with here.

b00ty4breakfast··on Solar is winning the energy race
We've already got pumped-hydro storage infrastructure and battery tech, while certainly not as far along as the boosters circa the middle of the last decade promised us, is at a point where it's viable as one part of the puzzle.

Speaking of the larger picture, this is to say nothing of all the other renewable options out there that continue to work when the sun goes down.

EDIT: And it doesn't speak at all to the other "alternative" energy storage options like thermal storage

b00ty4breakfast··on I Built an Open-World Engine for the N64 [video]
At the end of the video he says it needs real hardware or a "highly accurate emulator like Ares".
b00ty4breakfast··on Iran-linked hackers breach FBI director's personal email
>It's interesting to wonder how you get out of a spiral of incompetence and border-line (to be polite) corrumption at the highest level.

you get out when the thing dies because these kinds of organizations always end the same way; competence is usurped by sycophancy and flattery until there's no one left to keep it functioning and it collapses under the weight of it's own bullshit.

hopefully, there will be something to salvage but the longer these folks are in charge the bigger the splash will be when they finally bottom out

b00ty4breakfast··on An unstoppable mushroom is tearing through North American forests
Wonder if I'll be able to add a new entry to the list of "mushrooms that supposedly grow in my region but cannot be located within 100 sq miles of my home" soon.
b00ty4breakfast··on Moving from GitHub to Codeberg, for lazy people
>On the other hand Codeberg doesn't let you create private repositories at all.

are you sure about that? I'm fairly certain my repos on codeberg are all private but I could be mistaken.

b00ty4breakfast··on False claims in a widely-cited paper
you also said

>we should be highly skeptical of any finding that claims an agreements between facts and ethical values

And I'm saying that's silly because you should hold all claims in equal skepticism. Just because something contains an ideological basis does not, in itself, make it more or less correct.
