axxl··on Context switching costs more than we give it credit for
> Trying to code and listening to music falls under cognitive functions. Naming a variable while listening to your favorite songs' lyrics may result in cognitive overload. You are more likely to name a variable after the singers/songs name than what the variable is supposed to reflect (true story).

This point in the article lost me pretty quickly. My flow state is drastically improved by music, and I have never ever named a variable after the song name or song artist I'm listening to in my life.

Edit: Nor have I ever seen a variable named after a song name or artist.

Edit2: NotoriousViewController. TheWeekndTimer. RedHotChiliPointers. Now I want to name my variables like this.

This exists already, it's called RTX Voice: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/guides/nvidia-rtx-voice...
axxl··on Coronavirus will end the golden age for college towns
So, slightly more specifically it was the College of Business and College of Engineering only that did this. And since the policy expires June 1st of 2020 unless it got extended (couldn’t find any announcement that it did), I don’t know if the impact will have hit yet.
axxl··on A deep dive into iOS Exploit chains found in the wild
In addition though:

> The command-and-control server can also query for a list of all 3rd party apps and request uploads of their container directories.

axxl··on Google unlocks 33% of publisher paywalls on July 30
With the Economist you can at least do it via email, or if you’re doing digital only you can use a subscription via Apple’s in app purchases etc and manage it that way.
axxl··on Making Direct Messages Reliable and Fast
We did something very similar to this and our solution was to have 2 classes of requests, those that require global ordering (creation of posts etc) and those that don’t. These second classes of requests can contain dependencies to each other to have a local ordering but don’t block any other requests.
axxl··on Blue Apron becomes a penny stock, trading under $1 for the first time
What service is that?
axxl··on Introducing Ghost 2.0
Digital Ocean has a one click install that configured a ghost blog and takes care of everything for you.
axxl··on MacBook Pro with faster performance and new features for pros
Apple will swap a device for the latest model if it fails and is repaired for the same reason 3 times . It’s called “crewing” (or maybe “cruing”?) I don’t know the spelling. You have to get it repaired by Apple 3 times though.
axxl··on Apple’s Shortcuts will flip the switch on Siri’s potential
That is exactly what Shortcuts will help you do (to a degree). Developers can 'donate' (Apple's term for it) the activities that you perform in their applications. "Siri" will attempt to figure out when you perform this action most often using time/geo data and suggest it on the lock screen or search screen. This could also prompt you to add a voice trigger for this action, thereby 'teaching' Siri more.
axxl··on StarCraft Micromanagement with Reinforcement Learning and Curriculum Transfer
There is some stuff like this, you would see it on the ladder in SC2. Hacks that would perfectly split your marines against incoming banelings (they explode and do splash damage so the more you split the less effective they were), or auto burrowing/unburrowing roaches (which hides them from the enemy and they heal underground). It sounds cool but it’s way cooler when you saw a pro doing all that stuff themselves almost as good and still going back and building units etc.
axxl··on Apple needs to tackle the issue of smartphone addiction
You can have it only turn on when you connect to a car bluetooth device instead of using motion detection. It also applies if you have one of those bluetooth to auxiliary adapters if you have an older car.
axxl··on [dead]
The body of the article completely contradicts the title, making the points that Netflix has both moved on with other headline shows to attract/keep customers as well as them being praised for their quick action. So... Netflix doesn't have a mess on their hands?

Unrelated, the rest of the article is typical of newspapers rehashing the same facts for people who haven't caught a previous article. That style really dates newspaper articles for me, as it's a holdover to various print editions I imagine. You can link to a previous article instead of rewriting all the same information that's already been written before, but there's one article prepared for internet and print consumption.

axxl··on Mastodon 2.0
The last time I set one up the install/setup process ran out of memory when you had less than the 2GB Droplet on digital ocean, but when actually running it didn't need the full amount. Could have been improved since then.
axxl··on Canary Mail – Smart Email Client for Mac and iOS with PGP Support
How does read-tracking work (a feature I don't even want) with a client-only email solution like this?
axxl··on What's The End Goal for Wealthfront and Betterment? (2016)
What are the fees on those?

Edit: looked it up, the 2050 is 0.16%, not bad. I usually see much higher fees on those target date funds.

axxl··on New Macbook Pro power efficiency and time remaining
You can hold option-shift while adjusting the brightness (or volume) to get quarter increments. However it looks like it doesn't have any effect below the 1st level for brightness.
axxl··on Why I don't want stuff
I understand most of your post and your desire to have less stuff. However, when you can't bring wine (a consumable, literally no long term space-occupation or anything else, probably gone that night, if not you can just dump it down the drain) to dinner... sheesh.
axxl··on Caltech Researchers Find Evidence of a Planet Beyond Pluto
At WWDC last year one of the lunchtime presentations was by Michael Brown, one of the researchers involved here. He was one of the people who proved that Pluto should not be considered a planet and went over the history of the discovery/classification of planet bodies. He also mentioned that they had some evidence of a planet body beyond Pluto due to its gravitational affect of some of the smaller bodies out there even then. Interesting to see this is finally coming to something! He has the appropriate/amusing twitter handle of http://twitter.com/plutokiller
axxl··on iOS 9.3 Preview
Reading the text on the screen this appears to be in the action of 'encrypting'. i.e. they just hit a button to say 'hide this data behind my fingerprint' and you just have to authenticate and then it will be encrypted. A poor choice though perhaps. I think they wanted to demonstrate the type of data you would want to store.
axxl··on iOS 9.3 Preview
It's in the the Xcode 7.3 release notes, which for some reason aren't loading for me. Here's a screenshot I took earlier however.

axxl··on Public defender: it’s impossible for me to do a good job representing my clients
> I’ve been asked by my family members, my friends and my hairdresser why I represent criminals.

That's the most sad part of this article to me. Many people have lost innocent-until-proven-guilty in their minds. Tina has a good response in the article:

> The answer is that I, and other public defenders, don’t represent criminals. We represent poor people who are facing criminal charges — charges on which they are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. We represent members of our communities who have a right to real and meaningful legal representation, even if they are poor.

axxl··on Apple Partners with Southwest to Offer Free In-Flight Streaming via Beats Music
My understanding was that this is part of their on-plane server that you connect to via their wifi connection (for free). I think Southwest capitalized on a bet by skipping all the of the terrible touch-screen based back-of-seat entertainment systems and simply host a bunch of content and live TV on the plane that anyone with a device can connect to. People already carry around all the devices they need as they said.

To quote from the article, users will use their own devices:

>To use Beats Music free on aircraft, users will have to have a device compatible with the Beats app, which includes iOS and Android, and can also work with any web browser that works with the browser-based Beats streaming site.

axxl··on The brief history of Facebook apologizing
I'm always interested in the wording of the apologies themselves as well. In the most recent one: "My co-authors and I are very sorry for the way the paper described our research and any anxiety it caused." Specifically "the way the paper described our research". Not for actually doing the experiment, just that it came off wrong to the public...
axxl··on GitHub's new text editor leaked on Twitter
Looks interesting! I saw a commit 24 minutes ago for "Prepare 0.7.0 release" in the Welcome package, so it looks like they're planning to go public shortly.
axxl··on Aeromobil: Roadable aircraft
That's a little bit like saying 10 years ago that no one needs a smartphone, it's a crappy phone and a crappy computer, it's too big and heavy and expensive and you can't get data anywhere and it sucks to type on. Just buy a phone for moving around and a computer for getting work done.

Things change. Anything could be the Apple Newton of the next big thing :). (Although to be honest, I see transportation moving much more to a computer controlled system rather than this, but just for the sake of argument).

axxl··on Looking back on the game 'Myst' on its 20th anniversary
I think a Myst game with the Oculus Rift could be amazing. Especially with some sort of wiimote type device to manipulate objects.
axxl··on iMessage for Android
Indeed! I wonder if Apple will be able to patch this app out while retaining access for their own devices.
axxl··on How American Homeschoolers Measure Up
This statistic only works if the time spent by the parent is worth $0. Homeschooling is extremely time intensive.
axxl··on iOS7 is not about flat
Unfortunately not, Apple's push API supports a max notification payload size of 256 bytes.
