awolf··on Typing Practice for Programmers
This is great. You should charge money.

Regarding indentation: I think you made a reasonable choice in excluding it across the board. Definitely better than requiring it to be typed everywhere. That said, ideally you would require the user to make the keystrokes to un-indent whenever an IDE wouldn't automatically.

Also: Something in Objective-C please. Those square brackets took me a lot of practice to get used to.

awolf··on How an app with 200,000 downloads led to developer homelessness
>you'd have to sell to a hell of a lot of people to make any decent money

No. This right here is where you're way off.

Some hypothetical math: $3.99 app, $2.79 after Apple's cut.

$2.79 X 50 sales/day = $139.5 revune/day = $50,917 per year.

Enough to live and quite conservative if you make a quality product.

awolf··on How an app with 200,000 downloads led to developer homelessness
>The market has settled at $ZERO.

You're wrong. There are plenty of paid applications sold on the App Store that make decent money. One of my paid applications is bringing in enough to live on, with little maintenance, and without being on any of the App Store charts.

Aside from blind Apple hate, what exactly are basing your argument that the App Store is filled with hopeless developers and un-sustainable business? Do you have any evidence that the ratio of unsuccessful business ventures is any higher on the App Store than in any other walk of life?

I think you think its a lot farther than it actually is.

My estimate would be about a mile.

awolf··on Ask PG: Is RFS3 "Things built on Twitter" still sensible to prioritise?
To generalize: people who get Android smartphones don't use them as smartphones. iOS is where the money is, not to mention where the mindshare is.
awolf··on Pixel art and the art of preserving pixel size
Interesting that designing for iOS non-games is the opposite: design @2x and then scale down.

The scaling down can be tricky though. I'd love to see a similar post to this: a pro's take on retina graphics.

awolf··on Show HN: My one month side-project, Lucid Tracker: a daily life tracking tool
> 2. Fill out a report at the end of each day

That's your problem right thar'. Data input is tedious. Eventually (most) users stop doing it and everything breaks down.

Solve this problem, and this would be a very compelling service. Until then its sort of a "great in theory, doesn't work in practice" type of tool (for most people).

awolf··on Blind man shocks researchers with what he sees.
I think this man's signal to noise ratio for playing high stakes poker could be a sizable advantage. It would be very interesting to see him play.

Making good reads is mainly an input problem. There's so much to pay attention to that it interferes with noticing the important things. Tuning into emotions and mannerisms while also tuning out of visual noise could give this man exceptional situational awareness that's also free of his conscious mind's biases.

Great. So now they'll just raise their data prices. Woohoo!
awolf··on Titan, one of Saturn's moons, has an underground ocean
Perhaps by "molten ice" he means that the H20 is in its liquid state not because of the surrounding temperature but because of the pressure exerted upon it by the upper layers. Just a guess.
awolf··on Just pay me.
>10% per week, every week, starting from the first day that the invoice is overdue.

I'm pretty sure that's much much more than the maximum rate permitted by law.

awolf··on Fred Wilson: My New Nexus 7"
I disagree. The way I see it the 7" form factor is big enough to be a pain in the ass to carry yet small enough to be useless for most tablet stuff I'd actually want to do anyway.

In my opinion, a mobile device should have a keyboard big enough for me to type using ten fingers, or it should fit in my pocket. Using something in between baffles me.

awolf··on Apes With Apps - Ape building a vocabulary of thousands of words with ipad
Uh, no. "ipad" is an improperly formatted way of writing "iPad", a product by Apple. Tablet is a generic term.
awolf··on #BoycottApple trending on Google plus due to Galaxy Nexus ban
Our patent system is insane, granted. But in this case, at least Apple, ya’ know, actually invented some of the stuff they are using against Android.
awolf··on Nexus 7, Made for Google Play
>The keyboard still isn't big enough to touch type on comfortably

The iPad virtual keyboard is the same size as the keyboards on all MacBooks. Size is not why you're unable to type fast on the iPad.

>I'll never buy Apple until they have replaceable batteries.

Then you'll never buy Apple.

Non-replaceable battery means a much better device. Going back to replaceable batteries would be a huge step backwards. Replaceable batteries on portable devices are going away. Sorry to break the new to you.

awolf··on Nexus 7, Made for Google Play
Fine, let's all just agree to fault Android as a whole and move on.
awolf··on Sonic.net CEO: We Delete User Logs After Two Weeks. Your ISP Should, Too.
We have sonic.net in San Francisco. Unfortunately the speeds in our neighborhood (Haight Ashbury) are dismal. 7.5 Mbits/s, for the premium service. $90 /month.

I love the ethos of the company, but we're suffering here and will be switching soon.

awolf··on Dan Benjamin: Regarding The Talk Show
I've been curious about that myself. You say that Mike and Katy paid to be on 5by5. How do you know this? I would assume that the arrangement would simply to have shared a portion of the sponsorship money with 5by5.
awolf··on Show HN: Habit List - my first iOS app
Very nice start, I might start using this over my Streaks calendar app. One suggestion would be to add a passcode lock like Streaks has.
awolf··on How to Not Kill a Cyclist
A regional note for San Francisco: the bikers here aren't helping things. We seem to have a disproportionate number of asshole bikers who seem to think they are entitled to fly through stop-signs as 10/15 mph. As a person who both bikes and drives a lot in the city I see both sides of this coin. I understand that coming to a full stop is an expensive operation for cyclists... but approaching a 4 way stop with cars already at the intersection and then suddenly deciding that you're a magical cyclist that doesn't need to obey traffic laws is both dangerous and pisses of motorists which only increase tension for all people involved.
awolf··on How to Not Kill a Cyclist
For me, the realization that it is actually SAFER to claim the lane rather than be meek and risk getting doored or risk being in a position where cars assume they should pass you. Better to piss people off than risk your life. Plus, in most of those heavily trafficked roads the cars that are getting pissed off are delusional and don't realize that you're basically moving at the same speed as traffic anyway.
awolf··on San Francisco's Least Welcome Start-Up Explains Itself
It scans your face in a public place in order to do facial recognition. What happens if I want to go to a public place WITHOUT having my face scanned for facial recognition and inclusion in some startup's dataset? Do I not get a say? Is that not my right? Where do we draw the line?
awolf··on John Gruber takes 'The Talk Show' to Mule Radio
You guys definitely should have refactored the class prefix and removed the 5by5 assets though, right?
awolf··on John Gruber takes 'The Talk Show' to Mule Radio
Shame on you John Gruber.

Seriously though, it's John's show and he's free to take it to another network. I just _really_ hope that this transition was done in a respectful manner and that there isn't bad blood between 5by5 and Mule.

A little background: Let's Make Mistakes, Mule Radio's main show, got started with 5by5's help. Let's Make Mistakes was a 5by5 network show for it's first year of existence. It garnered all of the listenership and cross promotion that comes with being part of 5by5. After a year of getting traction, Mule split the show off into its own podcasting network, essentially becoming a competitor to 5by5. If Mule now aggressively poached The Talk Show from 5by5 then it was certainly a dick move.

Of course, we don't have all the details and this is just speculation. So again, I hope this was done in a way that respected Dan and 5by5.

awolf··on Artificial Pancreas Helps People With Diabetes
A nitpick, but it is an important distinction: people who need this can not be CURED by modifying their diet. They can certainly be helped though. Changing my sugar intake pattern was the single best change I've ever made for my long term health as a type 1 diabetic.
awolf··on Artificial Pancreas Helps People With Diabetes
Meat quality is a huge component of eating Paleo. Grassfed and pastured meats may be more expensive but they pay dividends in health benefits.

Which brings me to your second statement that "consuming animal protein" is "very bad for humans". Do you realize that humans and the ancestors of humans have been consuming animal protein for 2 million years? Our metabolisms EVOLVED for eating animal proteins. Consuming animal proteins is the only way our species has been able to survive and thrive in ALL climates from the north to south poles, many places where vegetation is only available three months out of the year. Animal proteins are the only food available to us which include all 20 amino acids necessary for optimal health. Pound for pound, meats are drastically more nutrient dense than any other form of food. What the hell are you smoking?

awolf··on Artificial Pancreas Helps People With Diabetes
Yup. Paleo has been transformative for me. The reason this diet is so great for diabetics is two-fold:

1) Meat gives my body the correct satiety signals, and so staying away from all of the carby treats that I use to find so addictive is no problem. It's easier for me to eat the right foods AND eat the right amounts of those foods.

2) Meat is not made of sugar like high carbohydrate foods are. The protein of meat needs to undergo a slow metabolic process (gluconeogenisis) in order for my body to turn it into sugar. What this means is that my food is "slow release" energy (sugar) as opposed to an instant sharp spike in sugar. Predictability is key when you need to manually inject the correct amount of sugar consuming hormone after every meal.

This diet is also great for EVERYONE... But that's a different discussion.
