miss the bold 9000 so much

it sounds like there is a slow and steady open source community around either replacement q20 keyboards, or a reverse-engineered one? https://hackaday.com/2025/06/04/the-blackberry-keyboard-how-...

and the beepy, which runs linux and for some reason has the keyboard blurred out on its homepage https://beepy.sqfmi.com/

awinter-py··on GitHub no longer uses Toasts
> User and system-initiated actions that require more complicated interaction may need additional feedback mechanisms to help inform the user that their request was successfully enacted. An example of this is the bulk creation of Issues.

^ this is a great idea and please add it to github actions where it takes like 10 seconds for the new thing to show up on the list after you trigger one

whoa thanks for the link to inkscape-silhouette, didn't know about this
awinter-py··on Building road signs at home using a Cricut Machine
what's good? have been shopping for something to cut medium EVA sheets. seems like brother scan N cut is most likely to work with SVGs + linux, but can't handle anything past 2mm. siser juliet + silhouette get recommended too but I think both rely on proprietary software

laser cutters seem better on the software side, but more expensive, less safe? (and also not safe at all for vinyl)

awinter-py··on Pocketbase – open-source realtime back end in 1 file
Sandstorm (open source PaaS + app ecosystem) didn't make it but was encouraging to me at the time -- a standardized PaaS would seem to drastically reduce the lift to build and to host self-host things.

(No shade on compose / helm but have never had a 3rd party compose / helm thing that didn't poop the bed in some way after 6 months)

Is that happening here? Is there an ecosystem of other OSS self-host things built on pocketbase?

awinter-py··on µcad: New open source programming language that can generate 2D sketches and 3D
Tried openscad and then cadquery for some geometry iteration projects and found them clunky. It wasn't just that I was missing a UI; the functions, constraints and geometry kernel weren't as powerful as onshape, which I've used a bit, and presumably light years behind fusion 360, which I haven't used.

Even freecad, a UI-based oss cad, is not quite ergonomic for a beginner-to-intermediate user, though it has come a long way in the past few years.

I'm excited for there to eventually be a good open source cad option, whether language-only or language-plus-GUI, but am also increasingly on team 'tools matter for your productivity'.

awinter-py··on Twake – open-source Google Workspace alternative
not having investigated this tool, I'll say that the key thing for 'open alternatives' is simplicity of hosting, + many tools have failed me in the past

thinking specifically of immich + simplenotes, which have complex docker compose stacks, and at least immich requires a lot of TLC to keep the backend in sync with the frontend. fail at this and your images will not sync.

(and I am not knocking it, I use it + love it)

these apps are in a sense featureful, with ML indexing and other search features, but in a sense just auth wrappers on file storage; hosting them they should, somehow, be simpler than it is

awinter-py··on At Amazon, some coders say their jobs have begun to resemble warehouse work
ah yes, how the kiva robot lifts a mobile shelf full of Codes and brings them to me for my inspection. I use my left hand to reach for the Code I need and place it in the tote, because my right shoulder is injured from repeating this motion.

The tote goes onto a conveyor where it is shot forwards, backwards and sideways, all around the warehouse until it reaches the compiler station. There, another worker will lint each Code with a lint roller and compile them by selecting the appropriately sized cardboard box.

Next, this executable bundle will be linked with its customer, possibly by means of a plane or 18-wheeler truck, with last-mile linking performed by a smaller vehicle suitable for urban traffic ...

awinter-py··on Reinvent the Wheel
engage rationally with build vs buy decisions

accept that there are compatibility boundaries such that it is sometimes quicker to create a new X than locate it on the market, or that X is too expensive and it's time to pursue vertical integration

but teams who can't do build vs buy properly are kind of doomed, sentenced to endless cycles of Not Invented Here syndrome which block other work.

if you're in a meeting and someone says 'we can't launch our website until we develop a platform-native way to host websites' you're in the wrong part of the curve

awinter-py··on Police monitored New Orleans with facial recognition cameras
city code seems to be here https://library.municode.com/la/new_orleans/codes/code_of_or..., Sec 147-2 'prohibited surveillance technology'

aclu article on wapo's reporting https://www.aclu.org/press-releases/208236

2022 local coverage when the city ordinance was passed:

https://thelensnola.org/2022/08/04/council-passes-guardrails...

> one of the primary components of the measure — that police get approval of a judge or a magistrate commissioner prior to requesting the use of facial recognition — was removed prior to passage due to objections from criminal district court judges, who said they needed a better understanding of the technology

> the measure also clarifies that the technology cannot be used to investigate aboritions or any consenual sex acts between adults “including without limitation any law purporting to criminalize sexual contact between same-sex partners.” Performing abortions is now a crime under Louisiana’s “trigger law,”

> The council banned the use of facial recognition technology in 2020 as part of a broader ordinance aimed at regulating surveillance technology in the city, which also banned characteristic tracking software, cell-site simulators, and predictive policing

> after a push from Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s administration and NOPD leadership amid a recent spike in homicides and other violent crimes, the council voted 5-2 last month to permit NOPD to access facial recognition technology in order to investigate certain crimes
