awinder··on Ask HN: Have you experienced “hiring fraud?”
“was that wrong? should I not have done that?”
awinder··on 62% of workers cut back on savings amid concerns about the economy
“Almost one-third — 31%— of respondents reduced contributions to their 401(k) plans. Meanwhile, 26% said they’ve cut back on paying down debts, 25% reduced their long-term savings, 24% scaled back emergency and short-term savings, 19% whittled down contributions to health savings accounts and 13% reduced contributions to a college savings fund.”

More than retirement/401ks only.

awinder··on Taxing Mechanical Engineers and Subsidizing Drama Majors
That’s not how loans work, if it was credit card debt yeah you could pay a minimum forever, but education loans have terms attached with fixed payments.
awinder··on The family that built a ballpark nachos monopoly
Which article? Both linked articles describe nachos as being invented in a Mexican boarder town; the post article adds color commentary about a group of Texans ordering them
awinder··on Mortgage Rates Jump Above 6%, Putting Pressure on Housing Market
Current FHA mortgages are assumable
awinder··on The search for dirt on Mudge
Yeah I’m with you, once the friends group clued in that it was a bunch of financial types trying to make trades on a feeling, they should have spit all kinds of divergent information into that idiot machine.
awinder··on Woman sues after DNA from rape kit used to arrest her
Yeah but so is incompetence…
awinder··on Apple’s next big thing: A business model change
The integration of dark sky was definitely rocky but apple is running dark sky as a data api now, this android app is apparently using it as it’s weather data source now:

awinder··on Meta cuts Responsible Innovation Team
They’re not only fun to play with, but when someone needs to purchase cachet for a new toy and they come to you to chat about it, cha-ching.
awinder··on Patreon laid off their security team
What’s unethical about stating that your entire team was disbanded (aka not terminated for individual performance) and you’d like help with connections finding new work? The message seemed extremely germane, seen those messages constantly over the years.
awinder··on The super-rich ‘preppers’ planning to save themselves
In a lot of ways, the extreme wealthy providing that better life deprives the majority of providing their kids a better life. The state could fund things that meaningfully improve the lives of many kids at the expensive of generational wealth transfer for a few. Conceivably, the kids of extreme wealthy would still have been given a massive leg up — it’s just that they would have to contribute (or eat a tax, realistically they’re still probably able to do nothing in many cases).

Also it’s entirely possible to set a floor before a tax kicks in to allow some token transfer of wealth, but yeah there’s a huge difference between a moderate transfer of wealth like a (average) home and rebasing millions and millions of asset wealth, a fleet of homes, etc.

awinder··on Blocking Kiwifarms
Are airlines not a form of infrastructure? Because they make extra-legal decisions on banning customers, usually based on obnoxious behavior.

They’re also private infrastructure unlike water/power, which is the position that cloudflare is in.

awinder··on The branch banking model
Teachers can max out at a good salary, Chicago looks pretty close to where I live where 25-30 years in you can get up towards 90-100k. An L3 Google engineer looks like they start at 190k. That’s an extreme example but I’m just saying, dual-teacher families are probably not exceeding the median dual-professional household salary, so I don’t understand the callout.
awinder··on The branch banking model
“‘the mass affluent’; they’re retirees, dual teacher families, software engineers, small business owners, and doctors”

Um I think one of these things is not like the other from a cash holdings standpoint.

awinder··on Ask HN: How do startups/lean teams successfully handle mat/pat leave?
FMLA leave is job-protected and it’s illegal to retaliate against an employee for taking it. You can be fired when you return for reasons not related to the leave but - it’s also dangerous to play that game if you don’t have a documented history to support it.
awinder··on The Big [Censored] Theory
Network television is some fine goalpost-moving, but as far as general media access goes you can find it on 3 US streaming services, and the reason no broadcast network is picking it up for redistribution has no basis in government censorship.
awinder··on The Big [Censored] Theory
It was removed during some Comedy Central marathon lmao, it’s still a part of the series, no episode was renumbered, and it’s on Peacock which might as well be the canonical streaming source
awinder··on Why is Snowflake so expensive
I think the main metric that this is built on may be too coarse to derive the meaning that the article is. There’s conjecture that what’s driving this is more querying over the same dataset (more streamlit dashboards) but it could just as easily be expanding usage inside of companies. That’s what’s going on at my company right now, more teams using snowflake, more data being pushed in to replace existing workflows, etc.

I’m also not sure I understand the dig at streamlit dashboards. If you’re running hardware and introduce new read workflows, eventually you’ll need more read replicas and you’ll pay more for it. Maybe you can argue that snowflake is doing this at a higher cost but the metric data is not available in the sources to make that claim.

awinder··on Ask HN: Our users don't want to pay taxes
… why are these businesses not paying taxes? Is it a lot of small-volume hobbyist merchants who might not legally have to pay taxes? Is it people who should be paying taxes and are just skirting the law? How much do you expect to monetize from this class of users?
awinder··on Why don’t we do email verification in reverse?
Non-marketing emails from the company to push information to you while you’re out of the app. Think stuff like:

1. receipt / shipping notifications from an online shop 2. emails from enterprise chat apps that let you know you’ve missed messages 3. “Suspicious login” or similar notifications 4. prompts about billing if credit card is nearing expiration or a problem charging your account

awinder··on The erosion of the Mac experience
“Why are 3rd party applications distributed as Disk Images? Then some as package installers? It's weird and nonsensical.”

How many different bespoke ways of installing windows applications are there again? Is it even countable? Is installshield beloved by anyone untainted by just dealing with it for decades?

awinder··on Why don’t we do email verification in reverse?
Most webapps have a need for transactional messaging of some sort. But even putting that aside you’re missing TOS support. Every TOS is going to have conditions that define scenarios where you need to communicate with users. Including changes to the terms of service ;-). Or for breaches of data, you’ll want/contractually need to communicate that to your users.

So yeah you could build different options for all of these things, and maybe snailmail users of these TOS occasions. But the system of doing this over email is so standardized that the possible friction of one-time setup pails in comparison to the alternatives.

awinder··on Michael Jordan: “Republicans Buy Sneakers Too”
I would love to know how one generalizes & measures a respect delta between Labron James and Jordan, and then correlate it to social stances. Tiger Woods took issue with racism and exclusion in golf, no one is going around claiming Nicklaus is more widely respected because he doesn’t have a Nike sponsorship lol.
awinder··on What I've learned from the world's elite is that hustle culture has it all wrong

awinder··on Ask HN: Anyone else disillusioned from working in tech
Technology is a sector classification, but for any other company in other sectors, they likely have a business unit called Technology, with a c-suite position called chief technology officer, with developers who hold computer science degrees (just like at Google! No wai?! Yes wai!)

MasterCard is also a tech SPDR holding, for… reasons?

And finally, Netflix is a tech company with a film studio, but Disney is a film studio with a technology application, and I can’t meaningfully disambiguate why someone who works on Netflix code is in technology and a Disney+ developer is not.

awinder··on Why does anything exist?
The h264 movie Top Gun is purely information, but it’s also derivative and with information loss, right?

From our perception at least, it seems like Tom and Val were a part of the earliest & highest fidelity information that makes up Top Gun when they were part of shooting it day to day. Or somewhere around there, the movie that the h264 derives from requires daily shots + editing/effects etc. If Tom & Val are in-universe observers, then wtf happened during those shooting days, and in their argument I’d imagine, the ideas & experiences they’d had on how they portrayed their parts?

awinder··on New Home Prices Are Starting to Drop
Looking around ARM mortgages were around 3% of all mortgages in 2020-2021 era, so I don’t think it’s fair to generalize that peoples mortgages are going up. But yeah, people will become immobilized if their property has decreased in value, until it recovers, and that’s unfortunate.
awinder··on Incident report: Employee and customer account compromise
Utilizing VPN as _a_ layer of network security with additional systems access security is something we learned in the old pre-2020s era, and I’ve never seen a cavalier system like you’ve described deployed. But maybe it’s just because I’m not up to date on “state-of-the-art” 2020s systems.
awinder··on Incident report: Employee and customer account compromise
These screenshots don’t look very sophisticated. Does okta even have a scheduling solution? Who was clicking these links, engineers? Is it normal for Twilio to send corporate communications like this over text (at least without a good reason & an email warning it’s coming and verifiable details)?

I’m also curious how much customer data an attacker should have been able to get into from outside. Is there no 2fa-auth vpn needed to get in? Or is there just lots of customer data hanging out in email/whatever?

awinder··on Microsoft Windows is prohibited at Gitlab
Kdiff3 had its last release in 2014, old multiplatform apps that weren’t updated would have this problem. Zenmap seemed to not be unsigned? Wireshark was definitely signed, which I was kinda surprised about. I wouldn’t have expected QT apps to be signed, but looks like even those have some support. I’d also argue there’s better Mac apps, at least in terms of kdiff3 ;-).

Fair enough on App Store / popularity, my point was mainly saying the apps on the App Store are of “lesser quality” / the lowest quality is ridiculous. It’s not like the 30% of setapps not-on-the-AppStore apps are explicitly not doing it from a quality standpoint. Most are just because they don’t want to / financially can’t afford the revenue split.
