awill88··on Don’t teach during code reviews
I too like to use the metaphor a codebase is like a public toliet. Gotta clean it or it’s gonna get gross!
awill88··on Big Tech is using layoffs to crush worker power
Nah.
awill88··on SQL should be the default choice for data transformation logic
Disagree, there should be no default choice.
awill88··on Fentanyl vaccine tested in rats
Whoa, you’re so out of touch with reality. Yikes.
awill88··on Telling your inner critic to chill
I’m so mad at this article lol, like so much “no shit” going on. My critic is a total asshole!

“Typically it’s good to have a couple affirmations that work for you“ — “work for you” — so simple! Duh!

awill88··on Why to start a startup in a bad economy (2008)
Or maybe they wouldn’t know if they did? Are we pretending we’re all mind readers?
awill88··on Ask HN: Do you hate software engineering but love programming?
Feel like I would’ve said something like this at the beginning of my career.. you’re gonna go thru it, you’ll see. None of what you’re saying makes a lick of sense.
awill88··on Apple introduces end-to-end encryption for backups
Best to just be cautiously optimistic I suppose. It’s not like there’s much choice.
awill88··on Eye contact marks the rise and fall of shared attention in conversation
It depends on the person. I can’t look at someone directly who I find attractive, otherwise I just get over it and try to lock eyes because I want to treat ppl how I want to be treated, can’t have it both ways.. no one’s perfect though.
awill88··on Kite is saying farewell and open-sourcing its code
> The largest issue is that state-of-the-art models don’t understand the structure of code, such as non-local context.

When I read “non-local context,” it really drove home for me just how off the mark they were and changed the whole tone.

It also makes me think were they just hoping the solution would fall out of the sky? Seems irresponsible if that was part of their calculus.

awill88··on Consider working on genomics
> There is a significant gap between how software is currently developed in this space versus how it should be developed

I appreciate the authors honesty. Been there, take it easy bud.

awill88··on Z-Library | Domain Seized
Yeah, seems almost like a ML generated post because the nuance is suspect and implications huge
awill88··on Launch HN: Shimmer (YC S21) – ADHD coaching for adults
That’s what I need, another task lol
awill88··on Does experience make you a better programmer?
Pattern matching makes you a better programmer if you’re changing code, so experience helps more if you’re an original author imho.
awill88··on A sad day for Rust: actix-web is dead (2020)
I’m confused too.. when I imagine the purposes behind these type of shares, it always brings out the cynic in me.
awill88··on Why Did Comedy Die?
Sucks because I really like his writing, but dude (we’re informal right, man?) the politics piece just makes me wonder if the author does a delicate dance of language there, juxtaposing Obama as “self-satisfaction”

I mean you try and be the first black president. And he was hella funny too, sooo. :/ to wink at his fellow moderate conservatives, and yes I vote blue, sometimes red if they give a f*ck.

Anyways, just kinda takes a weird turn for me with Trump. Like, we all need to take shit less seriously, and Trump is hilarious.. but I dunno, calling him funny is almost too obvious I guess, or too absurd.. I probably just can’t take a joke.

in my humble opinion, of course.

awill88··on Ask HN: What Is the Hype with Docker?
Personally, docker is becoming boring and irritating. I was a huge fan, early adopter, let me ride in on this crazy train of software engineering. But after they inevitably went enterprise I died inside, end of an era.

Now that docker is the mainstay of beginner/intermediate engineering efforts, it’s just kinda meh. It’s not containers it’s the way communities prop weird stuff up like Docker is some prerequisite for moving fast.. and hey options exist like Bazel and Nix (and hopefully more to come) that build reproducible systems without always needing a hypervisor.

And also, I find it super irritating to not get any simplicity out of it unless you docker-compose.yaml. Which makes docker feel like a tool without batteries included..

Once ppl start using it as a dev container too it’s like gross Just my opinion though it’s also a fine choice for ballin out so I respect any and all hustle at the end of the day. To each their own.

awill88··on Product vs. Engineering
Already lost me at attempting to introduce the material highlighting trust issues at a startup.. like who can “boil it down” with a group of humans as tiny as a startup’s typical size? Product and Engineering? The pretentious tone knows no bounds.. Is that even worth talking about businesses at that stage? Lame. And come on, like he’d be in touch with the scrappy startup vibe at this point knowing what he would charge for consulting.. No thanks!
awill88··on The end of classical Computer Science is coming
> I don’t think this idea is crazy.

And other things the author likes to tell themselves.. or perhaps they enjoy building clout for saying outrageous things.. yawn

Sure there will be obsolete concepts, algorithms, and plenty of AI assistance, but programming is building a state machine, or like a house in an abstract space that powers machinery to accomplish tasks of value using a general-purpose computation device.. computer science is informs and is informed by a craft (programming) and that can only be replaced by another craft (whatever this is rests in the imagination the author). You’re still doing creative work, and you will only be as effective as your abilities in practice of applying theory.. the theory will not be “use AI” or “don’t learn computer architecture lmao what a nerd”

Imho that is.

awill88··on Microsoft bakes a VPN into Edge and turns it on
Yep, a VPN baked into a browser like this is literally Microsoft stealing the network routes from your ISP, who is probably too embarrassed to complain that what’s happening is they are taking that sweet, sweet data with them. It’s like high-fructose corn syrup for targeted advertising imho. Who’s selling?
awill88··on Show HN: Jiter – Just in Time Webhooks
Mm, so definitely temporary storage and I’m sure some steps were taken to encrypt that temp storage? What is the impact of scope for those secrets ya know? Seems like a honeypot for good stuff lurking in their cloud account.. not going to knock the idea though, pretty clever
awill88··on Did anyone else just get signed up for “Amazon photos” out of the blue for $60?
No, it’s strategic. Feature not a bug. As someone who has integrated with Visa/MC/Amex using old school SOAP APIs, you will get higher quality context about what’s going on with the card when you hit it with a zero dollar transaction. Can’t say for sure if they are doing it primarily to avoid supporting this virtual card thing. But I found it conventional in my fintech stint
awill88··on MinIO passes 1B cumulative Docker Pulls
> Those pulls don’t even account for other hubs (Quay.io for example) or private repositories, the real number is likely far higher but we count what we can measure directly.

Does the final clause of this sentence support or distract from their achievement? I love Minio; I’m definitely contributing to those pulls. But that phrasing at the end puts a bad taste in my mouth—seems pretentious. Does anyone else feel that way?

awill88··on Welcome to Your Airbnb, the Cleaning Fees Are $143 and You’ll Still Have
But like, do you rent out an Airbnb?
awill88··on Ninety Will Be the New 40 in 10 Years' Time
An advertisement dressed up as a news article: classy.
awill88··on M2 MacBook Air speakers damanged doing sine sweep tests at full volume
Ethically questionable to feel entitled with the intent of damaging, sure, but exposing a flaw that calls into question the authenticity of a merchant’s claims, e’hem the most valuable merchant who sells you their own insurance and generally holds the title as the most valuable company in the word.. I suppose an egalitarian perspective would hold that what the tweet expresses and does fair game so long as it does not incite a viral abuse campaign. Or I guess if it was a startup or smaller company I would feel different. Apple doesn’t need any favors, they are doing just fine right now.
awill88··on Crypto Dev Enters Wrong Command, Destroys Entire Company
I don’t get it, could someone who understands explain how this worked out? Like, wasn’t it on some kind of blockchain? like did they send their stake to the “ether”? (buh dum tiss)

This isn’t making obvious sense to me based on how very little I have paid attention to what these defi platforms actually do.. aren’t the coins and exchanges just nodes and a P2P distributed database with consensus driven transaction records, asymmetric encryption, metadata and some rules?

awill88··on Riff, automatically provide external dependencies for Rust projects
Ah, riffing it I see.
awill88··on The Twitter whistleblower story is worse than you think
$20 says Musk paid him, half serious. But who knows..
awill88··on As an engineer who becomes a leader – what is your number one challenge?
Getting out of your own way.
