awill88··on We have used too many levels of abstractions
As someone who learned computer science from tinkering with abstractions until I needed to go a level deeper with a subsequent education in it—-I think this article is inflammatory at best because they are attempting to assert themselves as a voice of a wise person, or, as an expert of how the future “is bleak”
awill88··on Jon Stewart's Apple TV show ends; Apple execs resisted coverage of AI and China
Eh, I wouldn’t. And I don’t know if he would either. He cares about his message not his personality or presence, and thank god. he’s always struck me as a guy who values showmanship, he gets his charm from saying what he says on the very payroll of the companies he criticizes.

Why on earth would he ever cheapen that affect he brings with an unfiltered stream, i.e. the dog water that is a has-beens podcast?

awill88··on Jon Stewart's Apple TV show ends; Apple execs resisted coverage of AI and China
What didn’t you like about it? I do think he was a little rusty in the first couple but the interviews were exquisite imho
awill88··on Jon Stewart's Apple TV show ends; Apple execs resisted coverage of AI and China
I am so upset but also proud of Jon. Right on, dude!
awill88··on Finland to vote against the EU mass surveillance and encryption ban directive
1st half of thought was amazing, but I’m personally still an individualist and no, we should not all live out in the open unless we all unanimously choose to. That of course is impossible.
awill88··on Next.js v13 websites are a heaven for scraping
Tell them all the juniors are using it and it’s causing widespread security breaches and could cost the company money (it’s half true at least).

If they don’t care about money when you talk about it, well, then that may signal something deeper.

awill88··on Next.js v13 websites are a heaven for scraping
Yeah, but don’t get yourself in trouble and be a renegade either.

I do not agree that engineers should avoid technical talks with managers. They should just always be prepared to break it down and provide examples. Look people in the eye, empathize with their sentiments, don’t be an asshole if you can help it, in my humble opinion.

awill88··on Google has sent internet into 'spiral of decline', claims DeepMind co-founder
It was all considered risky and niche (anything on the internet).

What made the free web possible was first and foremost, access to it.

Then, probably a combination of technological, cultural, and economic factors and the human beings behind the scenes who worked to either create software to give it away or to make money with ads by creating foobar service.

Yes, free software, and yes, because of advertising.

It’s both.

awill88··on OpenAI is too cheap to beat
Why the gimme-your-email-to-subscribe wall?
awill88··on Pentagon contracting Starlink to provide satellite communications for Ukraine
Sorry
awill88··on Pentagon contracting Starlink to provide satellite communications for Ukraine
Should have could have whatever. I completely understand any reasonable apprehension or general delay when on one side of the table you have Elon Musk who shows such little reverence for the integrity of the union (i.e. pissing his half assed thoughts in all our mouths about work and devotion) and on the other side you have the most powerful military force or bag of money. It probably took a while for trust to be established. I’m glad it’s happening. No notes. Go Ukraine.
awill88··on Undetectable Watermarks for Language Models
you are very kind thank you
awill88··on Platform Engineer vs. Software Engineer
> Comparatively, the role of a software engineer is rather limited.

Ouch, what exactly does this random, contrived distinction seek to do? In my opinion, a software engineer is a living concept that captures system engineering. It is like what, the new “general practicioner?” Only to be collected on your way to “platform engineer”

Pshh, whatever.

awill88··on The Staff Engineer's Path – Book Review
I disagree but only because I thought this way and it hurt my performance.
awill88··on The Staff Engineer's Path – Book Review
It might depend on the organization of course but I hear what you mean here. It does seem somewhat of a phenomenon..
awill88··on Even Apple employees hate Siri and are skeptical of its future, new report says
Don’t really rely on Siri that much. I absolutely hated Apple as a kid, but I dunno. Apple can take their time rummaging through my data in my humble opinion. Like, do they need to be the leader of ML when we all know what it takes to improve the models.. all of our data.. so, yeah.. I’m good with this.
awill88··on Automakers are starting to admit that drivers hate touchscreens
Does anyone else feel the timing is somewhat suspicious? I don’t know a single conversation I’ve had with anyone literally bitchin about how much they despise not having a button. PITA sure, but feels oddly close to all this supply chain stuff.. I’m probably nuts here..
awill88··on Why is OAuth still hard in 2023?
An abstraction that allows a landscape of experimentation and learning on an interrupt based general purpose machine? What a bunch of thoughtless assholes!
awill88··on Why is OAuth still hard in 2023?
It’s hard because the concepts of authentication and authorization are simple to abstract but hard to keep separate at a technical level. It’s actually super powerful once you futilely attempt to craft your own system that keeps the concerns separate.

Oauth is authz

But do get in “the door” you need OIDC + PKCE auth code grant.. or authn

awill88··on Apple wins antitrust court battle with Epic Games, appeals court rules
Developing world, not third world
awill88··on Ask HN: Is prompt engineering just snake oil?
Engineering is a practice. Like medicine, but we’re building machines that run in a virtual space. We architect and build houses in our minds. We send those projects to production to make the business money.

That’s engineering.

awill88··on A Response to Jacob Kaplan-Moss’s “Incompetent but Nice”
Sometimes people just don’t want to work with you because you’ve become a moniker, too. There’s no reason, seriously. It’s called being shit out of luck imho
awill88··on PayPal has restricted our account after we invoiced a key containing “ALEP”
Horribly applied logic. While mistakes will happen, PayPal for individuals and businesses are apples and oranges because that’s how the banks work. This is a business account. This comment adds nothing to the convo. Little Snitch is amazing btw
awill88··on Testing GPT 4's code-writing capabilities with some real world problems
And more things to yawn over! Come on, who cares if it writes code?! Is it that fascinating?
awill88··on GPT-4 Designed a Programming Language
Here’s the thing: I don’t care if the thing can make programming languages, I care as much as anyone here telling me they can probably demonstrate their programming language. How is that going to help? Or is it all about meeting and beating critics at this point?
awill88··on GPT-4 Designed a Programming Language
This all seems very personal to an outside observer and I do hope you’re feeling okay about humanity in general. I imagine like most models, GPT could (somehow) structurally become too burdensome, because of some future breakthrough. That stuff happens all the time. Also, I could be wrong. Doesn’t seem responsible to attempt to predict the future this way..
awill88··on Don't let event-driven architecture buzzwords fool you
Hard yawn
awill88··on Async message-oriented systems vs. REST for inter-microservice communications
Clickbait imho because there are less charged ways to express the point of what is essentially a sales pitch comparing a generic synchronous web service.

Why risk the cognitive dissonance by contriving the term “synchronous REST-based systems”

What? Lol.

awill88··on Windows 11: a spyware machine out of users' control
C# is the language I would have to be held at gunpoint to learn, personally.
awill88··on Don’t teach during code reviews
At the end of the day, since we’re talking about a human relationship between two individuals, it depends what you can and can’t do. In my opinion, do whatever you have to do to express your talent vicariously by completing your work to whatever standards matters most to the company you work for. Individuals can do whatever they want in code reviews. My advice is conduct yourself as the author says with humility and strict purpose. Teach, don’t teach, Who cares? Like, seriously. Jr devs, think for yourselves. So many snakes out here, watch your back. That’s the advice you should be getting sometimes.
