I'd love to write something clever and insightful that marks me out as unique, but I'm just another guy on the internet over sharing my opinions.

I'll do my best not to overstep, but I expect that of you too.

Maybe I has all the neurodivergence, maybe I don't, I'd love to have some reason for things that haven't gone swimmingly well, religion, class, neurodivergence, but the truth is, I believe in luck.

awesome_dude··on The future of independence is interdependence
Not sure why you think lashing out with claims of pseudo science is anything but poor behaviour and misinformation, but let's have a quick look at your claims.

1. Colonialism and Vikings would he separated by hundreds of years...

Vikings were colonists, famous colonies include Normandy, large parts of the British isles, and, Russia.

Note that they also settled in other lands.

2. The iron age comparison.

Not sure how carefully you read, but you might notice that there is a parenthesised word in my comment, (largely) indicating precisely what you are arguing i missed.

Note that i had to edit this because the phone and i disagreed on what words I was intending to use

awesome_dude··on The future of independence is interdependence
There's a very poor political movement that I have a strong distaste for (libertarianism) which preaches pure autonomy, but almost always fails because we need to put our resources together to build infrastructure.

We don't live in a utopia where we can behave with impunity - humans need to regulate, cooperate, and manage resources

awesome_dude··on The future of independence is interdependence
> This isn’t true. A business owner completes tasks with the help of employees, but unless he is indebted to a lender, he is still ordinarily thought of as being independent. Independence is a spectrum, and people who require that the world be re-engineered so that they can access it are generally on the lower end of that spectrum.

This concept is a myth - the "self made" isn't any such thing

awesome_dude··on The future of independence is interdependence
Just for the record - it's not a class thing; the colonial cultures stem from the Viking culture (largely) which favoured independence over interdependence.

Most other cultures favour interdependence - Asia, rather famously, doesn't have a pension/superannuation program (in general) because their cultures are heavily geared toward elderly living with their children and grandchildren.

If you do a good job - all the people find partners, and leave, and you need to find new people to join

If you do a bad job - all the people see it as desparate, and leave, and you need to find new people to join

It's a high churn environment so there's no real way to make money from... er... bums on seats.. so there's no real choice but to make some sort of barrier forcing people to spend money

I think, if i have understood the answers correctly that it's stopping a quick proliferation - but not a long slow infiltration?

Sorry, how does a gated registration stop someone creating an account, then handing it over to an LLM?

Serious question, am I misreading what's being said?

I feel more like an orchestrator when vibe coding than a developer, I'm telling each part what I want from them, judging them on results, and ensuring each part runs at the right time with the right lead in

No. The difference is you thinking that you, as the employer, have the right to surveil people, but then claim that you, as an employee, have the right to be free from such horrific conditions.

There's no other explanation.

You are in the public sphere right now posting your opinion

And, we know that various political machines are using bots/fake accounts the world over to push various agendas via comments.

Where is the line drawn?

No - it's hypocrisy for anyone to demand one set of rules for others whilst demanding that those same rules do not apply to themselves.

People in politics, as I said from the beginning, are still people. We can demand transparency in the decisions made (there are limits, because some of that information is sensitive - eg. National security, or commercial secrecy) but we cannot demand that people are surveiled every minute of their lives whilst at the same time complaining that it's a bad thing to happen to us.

awesome_dude··on Flock Wants the Most Detailed Map of Its Surveillance Cameras Taken Offline
No. Hypocrisy is when you refuse to have the same rules applied to yourself.

The claim was that they worked for you therefore they should be subject to constant surveillance. Submit to the same from your employer to prove that that is a reasonable expectation.

awesome_dude··on Flock Wants the Most Detailed Map of Its Surveillance Cameras Taken Offline
They're employees just like you and me, complaining that they work for you then refusing to allow the same rule to be applied to yourself by your employer is....
awesome_dude··on Flock Wants the Most Detailed Map of Its Surveillance Cameras Taken Offline
How is someone saying that public servants work for them different from that same person working for a private employer?????
awesome_dude··on Flock Wants the Most Detailed Map of Its Surveillance Cameras Taken Offline
Is that how you want your employer to behave? You want them to surveil you all day every day in case you are doing something that is counter to their business?
awesome_dude··on Flock Wants the Most Detailed Map of Its Surveillance Cameras Taken Offline
You are making a political statement there, does that not make you a politician?

There's a balance that needs to be struck, politicians are humans too
awesome_dude··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
> Then there's no such thing as security.

There really isn't

Ask anyone seriously involved in security - whether computer science related, or in general.

A thought experiment: Think about the most important secrets a country can have - now think how they are still discovered by competing countries, enemies, etc.

As long as there are humans in the loop there is a known weakness.

awesome_dude··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
Funny - now you're talking about context...
awesome_dude··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
The context is very clear - but, sure you can play word games, why not.

Just, you're doing it on your own.

awesome_dude··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
The paper relies on the fact that people who were dying did not have the gene, but those that didn't ... did

That's not really enough to say "We have found the gene" - it's just really good data to warrant further investigation

Also, the incubation period of the disease is up to 50 odd years, have there been follow up studies?

awesome_dude··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
I cannot find any such claim in the literature.

It appears to me that, like BSE (aka Mad Cow disease) it really depends on exposure.

awesome_dude··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
The claim is that people in PNG are "largely immune" to these diseases, where kuru shows that they are not, and the "cure" was a stop in the practice, not some evolutionary upgrade
awesome_dude··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
We still get diseases though, proving the point that millions of years of evolution are still not enough to build a perfect defence.

Your comment on PNG, seems to ignore Kuru

awesome_dude··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
This is the key truth that we keep forgetting
awesome_dude··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
There's absolutely no way to account for humans, who can be tricked, or pressured, or just make human sized mistakes.
