aw3c2··on Google Decides to Monetize Maps
I am not aware of a live location sharing function in OsmAnd.
aw3c2··on Google Decides to Monetize Maps
No, OSM should focus on what it is and what it does well. Reviews and photos are bound to attract a lot of garbage and problems. Navigation sure, there is lots of that available on OSM data already. Street view is also already covered by mapilliary and openstreetcam.
aw3c2··on Big tech lobbying gutted a bill that would ban recording without consent
Wikipedia is not a good example. It is freely licensed, available to download in its entirety and easily fits on a 30$ memory card.

In other cases those personal assistants could first ask permission to query an API or search engine.

aw3c2··on Geolocalized Open Data for Marketers
It's just a fancy frontend for OSM data extracts.
aw3c2··on IPFS Project Roadmap
I would love to try that, can you share a quick and easy breakdown of how I would do publish that?

*Two students. Current title makes it sound like there was a widespread phenomenum.
aw3c2··on Microsoft finds privilege escalation vulnerability in Huawei driver
Hell yes, device drivers and related tools are a cesspit of demon-worshipping excrements from outer space.

All I did was place the file in a ramdisk.

aw3c2··on Investigating the 900GB “Collection #1-5” password leaks with R
Oh nice!

`sort -u` is just as fast as `sort | uniq` for me but good call :)

> We’re talking about 31 million lines of data here (all lines with Swiss email addresses in the leak). On our workstation, reducing this to the distinct email addresses (approx. 3,3 million) took a mere 10.099 seconds (4 + 6 + .099).

That's just 700MB of data... On my 5 year old middle-class PC this took 12 seconds with sort and uniq.

    $ wc -l email30m
    31000000 email30m

    $ time sort email30m | uniq > email30m.uniq

    real 0m11.498s
    user 0m33.833s
    sys 0m0.933s

    $ wc -l email30m.uniq
    2172320 email30m.uniq
This automatically split the task into all available CPU cores.
aw3c2··on 24/192 Music Downloads and why they make no sense (2012)
I use my own 10€/month 2TB server with OVH but also have it synced to Google Drive.
aw3c2··on 24/192 Music Downloads and why they make no sense (2012)
And like homeopathy, this should be scrutinized scientifically. There is nothing wrong with eating tiny bits of sugared balls, but don't tell others they are somehow of special powers.

> Online backup? This seems like the only real option, but for me the risk/reward just doesn't fit.

What risk? You can privately store your music anywhere, it's completely legal to do so.

aw3c2··on AMA: Steven Pruitt, a Wikipedian with 3M edits
For some humble self-reflection: You just brought the spotlight on his apparently-noteworthy appearance here. This was not discussed by anyone here and at least for me, nothing that would have come to mind.
aw3c2··on OnionShare 2 adds anonymous dropboxes
But wouldn't that have the same problem that GP mentioned, that this traffic would be easily identifiable as NNTP? If you were the only person using NNTP, then whammo...
aw3c2··on Flightradar24 – how it works
Not open data :(

> for non-commercial use, all of this data is freely accessible to anyone!

> Any commercial users are required to license the data from ADSBexchange, contact here for terms.

Commercial use is a thing very hard to define so I avoid that even for personal projects (which could be consider advertisements for my commercial offers).

aw3c2··on Flightradar24 – how it works
Is there a site that offers truly open data, as in a download of all their collected historic data under a open license and without other restrictions (like having to query an API)?

Cheap listicle in own-domain Medium blog post, submitted by author. Author never did anything else than submit their own posts on HN. Including zero-content keyword drops like https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18774917

Skip, there is nothing but shallow advertisement here and that should not be rewarded by even visiting such posts.
