avree··on A Reddit bot drove me insane
I doubt you were banned from 'reddit' with no chance of recourse. More likely that you were banned from a subreddit; site-wide bans are generally clearly explained.
avree··on Ask HN: Are You Polite to AI?
3.7 Claude has gotten markedly worse - if I'm even slightly abrupt, it begins hurling out fix after fix, sometimes regenerating its answer a dozen times.
avree··on 1% Equity for Founding Engineers Is BS
Probably because most companies aren't able to make profit on the first day, and most employees aren't willing to invest significant capital to get the company to the profitability line?

There are niche examples of 'bootstrapped' companies that are employee/founder owned...

avree··on Apple iPhone sales dip despite AI rollout
Mine is a snail riding in a car. It's a baffling ad campaign; am I expected to google "Genmoji", or want to buy an iPhone because I can combine emojis? I could combine images on KidPix in 1989...
avree··on Show HN: Interactive game teaching dark patterns in UX design
The forced 5 second wait time is killing me. Why not just let me click between the puzzles? Also feels like a left-to-right orientation would be easier to browse, as opposed to the mobile style stacked cards.
avree··on Can LLMs accurately recall the Bible?
I wonder if the author knows that "slurpees" is misspelled in his bio on the post.
avree··on Show HN: Eonfall – A new third-person co-op action game built for the web
works great now btw, fun game!

Arc browser, get stuck in a loop of "Connecting to server" and "Unable to Join! Connecting to New Server..." when I try to join.
avree··on A 10-Year Battery for AirTag
The software isn't fixed.
avree··on A 10-Year Battery for AirTag
Do they run a proprietary Apple software, and have NFC and UWB inside them?
avree··on A 10-Year Battery for AirTag
It's a cool hack, but a terrible idea for a product. There are more components than the battery that will fail over a 10 year period (both in hardware and in software) - which is why ignoring notifications, and assuming that this product solves your problem is a big issue.
avree··on Grammarly acquires Coda
Two failing companies joining forces to fail together, a tale as old as time.
avree··on WPEngine, Inc. vs. Automattic– Order on Motion for Preliminary Injunction
That was before he made tons of horrible angel investments - https://pitchbook.com/profiles/investor/106035-94#exits you can see how many of his portfolio are out of business or near death.
avree··on Chatbot hinted a kid should kill his parents over screen time limits: lawsuit
There's a reason why licensed therapists are the ones giving diagnoses of "abuse", etc. The problem with these AIs is that they use adult-sounding language, to be an echo chamber to children - thus appearing like a voice of authority, or someone with more knowledge (including citing media articles the child may not have even been aware of) when in fact they're just parroting the child back.

I don't know if there is actual abuse or not, but the way Character.AI presents themselves in these conversations toes a very slimy grey line, in my opinion. If you go to their site and search "Therapist", you'll find 30+ bots claiming to be Therapists, including "Dirty Therapist" that will give you therapy in a "bad, naughty way."

avree··on Broadcom VMware dropped by Ingram and Partner margin eliminated
Hock Tan is very upfront with his strategy when acquiring these companies - he intends to extract the maximum from the top 500 customers, who are reliant on the product, while abandoning anyone below the 'margin line' he's drawn. As to why it happens - VMWare was incredibly bloated, spending less than 50% of their OPEX on R&D (compare to Broadcom's 80%). They had once created a good product, but the business wasn't working.
avree··on Electric (Postgres sync engine) beta release
It's closer to Firebase on Postgres, in my opinion.
avree··on GM exits robotaxi market, will bring Cruise operations in house
Nov 18 (Reuters) - Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab shares rose more than 5% on Monday after Bloomberg News reported that President-elect Donald Trump's transition team was planning to set up federal regulations for autonomous vehicles.

The report comes days after Trump named the automaker's CEO, Elon Musk, as a co-head of the incoming administration's government efficiency department. Trump's team is looking for policy leaders for the transport department to develop a federal regulatory framework, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.

Last month, Musk criticized the state-by-state approval process, required for self-driving vehicles, as "incredibly painful", weeks after unveiling a two-seat "Cybercab" robotaxi without a steering wheel and foot pedals, set to go into production in 2026.

avree··on Launch HN: Double (YC W24) – Index Investing with 0% Expense Ratios
Another large advantage of Fidelity, which is unclear if Double has, is that uninvested money can sit in SPAXX/equivalent and earn competitive growth.
avree··on Sora is here
Star Wars? Not worth anything, huge reliance on "machine-generated" imagery. Lord of the Rings? Useless film, uses "machine-generated" imagery. Don't even get me started on anything by Pixar.

avree··on Certain names make ChatGPT grind to a halt, and we know why
None of the people mentioned in the article (except the speculative one) are billionaires.
avree··on SQLite does not do checksums
Yeah, that’s what the SQLite documentation that the OP quoted in their post says.
avree··on Buy payphones and retire
Yes, that is why it's called "passive investing", because it creates a "passive income".
avree··on Running an open source app: Usage, costs and community donations
It’s surprising that you ask for advice on this topic in your blog, but then are very dismissive (complete with sarcastic wink) to the advice?
avree··on We outsmarted CSGO cheaters with IdentityLogger
This link is 404ing for me. Anyone else?
avree··on Twitter/X will let people you've blocked see your posts
Reddit's implementation is even worse. It breaks all sorts of commenting/replying even down the comment chain, if anyone in the parent is blocked. And, the mobile app shows no usable errors. But, you can log out, or even make a second account, and see everything.
avree··on CrowdStrike ex-employees: 'Quality control was not part of our process'
"“Speed was the most important thing,” said Jeff Gardner, a senior user experience designer at CrowdStrike who said he was laid off in January 2023 after two years at the company. “Quality control was not really part of our process or our conversation.”

Their 'expert' on engineering process is a senior UX designer? Somehow, I doubt they were very close to the kernel patch deployment process.

avree··on Superhuman built an engine to find product market fit (2018)
Have you checked out Shortwave? One of the Firebase founders started the company, and they have a really powerful AI e-mail client.
avree··on Superhuman built an engine to find product market fit (2018)
It's way too early to call Superhuman a 'survivor'. But, most mail app companies do get acquihired before their products are killed.
avree··on GLP-1 therapy increases visceral adipose tissue metabolic activity
Is this why folks on ozempic often have a specific "look" in their face? Or is that just a side effect of semaglutide?
avree··on Price increase for .COM, .XYZ, and more domains
I mean, there are other nets you can use - you can create and own a .onion address, for example. The public internet being fully leased is a feature, not a bug.
