avighnay··on What I learned from the Chinese about our Indian online market
Here are some counter examples to the cynical uproar, I have specifically chosen examples of entrepreneurship born in India (against ones re-imported from the US and elsewhere)

Successful companies that created products for the local market. All examples are from TamilNadu a southern Indian state. More such examples exist all over India. Such examples are not possible without having consumer interest at heart, Indian companies not respecting consumer interest is a myth in my opinion.

avighnay··on Introducing Bootstrap Studio
$50 is nothing for such a tool for a one time payment! Even at that price it is very difficult for the tool to make a profitable full time business model. I want to also add that the 50% discount is not a helpful message either.

I always ask my team, how is that as developers we always want free software but yet want a salary hike every year as a software programmer!

avighnay··on Ask HN: Why do UK companies think that software development is cheap?
I would not blame the client, any industry's value is a direct reflection of how the industry projects the value of its produce.

We software engineers more often than not, project the 'I can build that easily' view (you can see that in this thread too). Many of us are too eager to put our engineering ego before business sense. We forget that it is one thing to demonstrate technical feasibility and quite another to build a finished product. Even the smallest piece of software needs real good effort to make it complete.

This is compounded by having substantial pieces of software available as open source and customers always read that as free as in free beer. It takes quite some effort to make them see otherwise.

When we say its easy, when many of us give our work away for free (even with good intentions), when we put engineering before business, we are steadily moving software in the path to being a cheap commodity.

All this is not even considering availability of software talent in countries where the skill set is available for much less...

avighnay··on The rise of Africa’s super vegetables
These very same plants used to be very common in Indian cuisine too...

Solanum nigrum - http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Black%20Nightsh... Was a common home cooked item in Tamil Nadu (South India) called Manathakali Keerai in Tamil

Vigna unguiculata - called Karamani in Tamil, is also a very common vegetable in home cuisine of Tamil Nadu https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oifwbfSrKWA

Corchorus olitorius - http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Nalta%20Jute.ht... called Punakku, however is used only as traditional cattle feed and considered lowly for human consumption for unknown reasons and is a slang used to insult a person for foolishness or low IQ

Amaranthus - Mollai Keerai Moringa oleifera - Murungai, very popular and can be seen grown in most homes in rural/semi-urban Tamilnadu, and very popular in Sambhar - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKT--cbBmhk

avighnay··on Cheese changed the course of Western civilization
Also strangely there is no cheese in Indian diet history until a few decades back. Traditionally it has been milk, curd, butter, butter milk & ghee

Milk and its byproducts have been a revered part of Indian religious traditions from ancient times and hence the source of consideration behind the cow as a holy symbol

avighnay··on Startup creates VetiGel, a plant based polymer that seals wounds in seconds
Based on the name, wonder if the gel is an extract from an ancient medicinal oil from the plant Vetiver (Tamil)? The medicinal properties of this plant are well known since ancient times and are chronicled in ayurvedic practice and ballads of India.

avighnay··on Show HN: StackShare – discover and discuss software stacks
My analogy was to depict a car company and not a single individual's car. As in software company using third party services has the same business risks as a car company using third party services.

My view point was not from a single individual using the product but from the manufacturers view point.

avighnay··on Show HN: StackShare – discover and discuss software stacks
Only in software industry do we still fee this way! For e.g. Can we imagine a car delivered to us without involvement of any third party components?

Why do we feel software always has to be built from scratch or use free (open?) stuff? What is wrong in software being built on credible third party services?

Perhaps the sign of a mature industry is when such credible third party partnerships become the norm...

avighnay··on India’s Toilet Race Failing as Villages Don’t Use Them
Yes and no to the point on 'guys were cleaning up'.

Yes, such a travesty did and worse in some places exists still. However, when the practice of relieving oneself in an area designated for that purpose outside the village for public in general, there was no one cleaning it up, it was left to nature. Ironicaly, The job of toilet cleaning started to exist only when the toilets moved closer and closer to home.

No, we still do not clean up after us and even today whether we like it or not there are still people in all countries throughout the world who are engaged in the waste disposal industry. Guys who collect garbage at your home every morning, still don't really enjoy it whether they come walking, on tri-cycle or in a ultra modern garbage truck and it is the practice in the best of societies today. Collecting decomposing organic waste of any nature is bad experience for anyone.

avighnay··on India’s Toilet Race Failing as Villages Don’t Use Them
What we end up doing is comparing the apples of present day hygiene etiquette to the oranges of what is remnant of a hygiene system that has worked quite well in its hey days.

What is this system is remnant of is;

A very sound personal hygiene system followed for centuries, bathing two times a day, washing ones feet before entering a house, not wearing footwear inside one's house, cremating the dead outside the boundaries of the village, designated community space outside the village for natures call, two separate ponds in every village one for bathing (with separate designated bathing steps for women and men) and the other for washing clothes and a special pond inside every village temple for ritual bathing. Population has made the existence of this system impractical but that does not mean people will just change overnight relatively speaking.

In fact, up till a few generations back, most Indians would be aghast at the unhygienic notion that one can have a toilet inside one's home!

For eg. a reverse bias is, even today a rustic villager in the remotest part of rural India would cringe when he/she hears that the people in the west just wipe but not wash after they do their job (most Indians, even the ones in the west now, secretly do cringe at this idea in fact).

Why this notional difference? It could be the relative availability of water, the extremes of weather (cannot wash in icy cold water can you?) and such differences that existed in one's past which moulds one's personal hygiene etiquette.

avighnay··on Poll: How long have you been programming?
Just over 20 years now and loving every bit of it! I started with hobby electronics and failed miserably at it, I was just not cut out for hardware, after having failed more than a few times on a simple amplifier circuit, software felt like heaven as it was more lenient towards my trials and definitely cost effective!

Blessed enough to have Indian parents who bought me a computer at unproportional cost to my dad's middle class government salary, discovering the joy of creation, the magic of computer graphics, the wonders of 3D modeling and gaming (Michael Abrash's book was my first inspiration, I still have all my books from back then), pulling night outs at college computer lab, wide eyed at Internet and the black IRC chat window, ending up in enterprise software as a professional, fortunate enough to be enlightened on the intricacies of enterprise software by the veterans of BaaN software (it runs Boeing), lucky enough to build 3 enterprise software platforms from scratch and now the fourth one is by running my enterprise mobility PaaS company from India with a team of wonderful young new generation developers who beat me squarely at my old game!

Thank you for evoking all the nostalgia :-)
