avgDev··on PS5 Relapse Exploit
Sony is barely making money on PS5 hardware.
avgDev··on ChatGPT Pro 500
I would rather use a skilled dev + AI. As dev I am more likely to learn from AI, as it is better at explaining concepts than devs fresh out of school.
avgDev··on ChatGPT Pro 500
I've talked to VP at my company and we both agreed $1000 for the time saved, is still 'worth it'.

Dev salaries are high and devs often have to realign buttons or change colors. We are not always working on complex ideas.

I rewrote a big piece of software from scratch....it had 0 docs. Documenting of classes and flow took me weeks. Complete rewrite took almost 2 years. I am confident that with AI I would be able to get this done in a few months.

avgDev··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
One could also pay for a usenet provider, this is much better than p2p. You pay a monthly fee and the usenet provider hosts all the linux distros :) one might desire. You just download and never distribute.

Once you set it up with Sonarr and Radarr and Plex/Jellyfin you will never go back to HBO, Netflix, blah blah blah blah.

avgDev··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
Oof. I guess sailing the high sees is back on the table.

We are back to cable pricing, but shows and movies are all over the place and now we need multiple apps to track us.

avgDev··on Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs
Accurate.

I've wrote a rather large system that runs a medium business, solo. When a bug pops up, I feel unfamiliar with the code. It was all written by hand with 0 LLM usage.

It is normal to feel this way. However, I am still very capable of resolving the issues in a timely manner. Adding any new big features is a big undertaking and usually involves a lot of refactoring to fix the dumb decisions I've made.

avgDev··on There's a 100% Chance AI Agents Are Ruining the Internet
Fair point!

I would call 4 local structural engineers to you. Ask about price. Inspection and report is about $700-$2000. You just go with someone who feels right for you. Still cheaper than $40k concrete job, so not as much of a deal.

avgDev··on There's a 100% Chance AI Agents Are Ruining the Internet
I'm open to leaving voicemails. If I hear "hello, this is Bob from Bob's Concrete, I'm on a job leave a detailed message and I will get back to you", that guy is likely to get my job, even if he is a bit more.
avgDev··on There's a 100% Chance AI Agents Are Ruining the Internet
I got quotes first which was the wrong approach. I ended up taking photos and detailing what I want on plat of survey. I also consulted a structural engineer(for garage cracks) and researched using rebar, fiber mesh, and metal mesh.

So, basically I know what I want and it is easier to get quotes this way. I just send the docs and dimensions.

avgDev··on There's a 100% Chance AI Agents Are Ruining the Internet
I'm looking for a contractor to do my concrete. 2 companies had AI agents. Instant no thank you, I'm just going to go with a guy that still answers his phone.
avgDev··on There's a 100% Chance AI Agents Are Ruining the Internet
I use AI to produce code. Outside of code, and getting information I need to complete tasks IRL, I'm moving more and more away from the internet.

The golden era of nerd filled internet is over. Now, even nerd parts of the internet are getting filled with AI slop and marketing.

I barely do social media, and mostly HN. I will probably just do some more nerd stuff IRL where I can meet people. I text and call people more.

I actually think AI will cause people to do more in real life because it degrades the value of the internet in general.

avgDev··on How to write an effective software design document
I cowboyed a lot of projects, then 2 years later a feature is not working as expected. It is.

Good docs, signed off by stake holders is essential. It basically covers you the dev, and confirms everyone involved agrees on what the software will do in certain situations.

avgDev··on Measuring the sloppiness of code
I encountered bugs created by AI. No matter how many times it tried it could not fix the bug, it was introducing so much slop to work around the issue.

I finally gave up and read documentation for 15 minutes and solved the problem.

I will never push AI generated code to production without understanding it, and this is why I only generate small code snippets and copy/paste most of the time.

avgDev··on Measuring the sloppiness of code
Writing code at enterprise level is insanely difficult. You are constrained by budget, staff, legacy databases/environments, business rules hiding all over the place, and people.

You can't just rewrite everything. So over many years people are touching small parts of the pie.

If it works it isn't low quality.

avgDev··on The asteroid currently hitting front end web development
I have a blazor app in poduction, Codex made errors which it could not fix and it required me reading documentation. I won't argue that it didn't make my life simpler, tasks which would take me days are done in hours, sometimes without touching code.
avgDev··on GPT-6 Astra
We fight the clankers.
avgDev··on ChatGPT Is Throwing 404
Oddly enough, this will be the most ORGANIC hacker news comment section in a while.

Stand up to clankers fellow humans!

avgDev··on ChatGPT Is Throwing 404
What else are we going to do when LLMs are down? Need some fun in here.
avgDev··on ChatGPT Is Throwing 404
My processing power was weak before LLM era, now it is extra weak.
avgDev··on ChatGPT outage – Resolved
I would write a clever comment, but chatGPT is down.
avgDev··on Did Meta's Big Settlement Actually Help It?
Do you have children?

While parents have some control, they don't have as much control as you think. It is a constant, "but my friends can do this", and you have to deal with it all the time.

Parents now have to work 2 jobs, so the kid spends most of their time outside of home.

Also, comparing FB to cars, doritos is not fair imo, FB is closer to crack. It can also be accessed on other devices than phones, WHICH they need for school. Not every parent knows how to block it, and kids find ways around road blocks anyway.

avgDev··on It’s so hard to finish an idea that is not yours and is just suggested by AI
I've found it very helpful with flushing out bugs, reviewing my code. I have a hard time trusting it to generate 100+ lines of code because in the end I am responsible for it.
avgDev··on Tracking Costco gas prices
I disagree. The prices still move with the price of oil. Their margins are just lower.
avgDev··on FDA clears blood test to aid evaluation for Alzheimer's disease
We can also test for PSEN1, which is 100% accurate in determining early onset alzheimer's disease, quite a it more expensive, so unreasonable as a screening tool unfortunately.
avgDev··on AI boosted homework scores, then exam scores dropped: study
It would be better than most physicians now. It can quickly crunch many pages of medical history and medical research, this something a physician cannot do. They have intuition but sometimes are not equipped to deal with complex problems.
avgDev··on AI boosted homework scores, then exam scores dropped: study
The problem is that the first source is incorrect because she doesn't deal with lisfranc injuries frequently enough and her knowledge is not good enough. I've had to go do my own research to find a guy who specializes in lisfranc. Most patients would not.

However, if you went to an AI agent which has access to medical research, you would get the most up to date research.

Why would I seek a 2nd opinion if the initial doctor knew what to do?

avgDev··on AI Boosted Homework Scores by 18% – Then Exam Scores Dropped 20%, Study Shows
Homework isn't boring.....its the social media and addictive games that completely are destroying our attention span.

After I detox from online games, I can go back to learning new "boring" stuff. There are nerds(myself included) who find learning fun, and using AI boring because it doesn't scratch the learning itch.

avgDev··on AI boosted homework scores, then exam scores dropped: study
I actually think having a single source of truth would not be terrible. Let me explain.

All podiatrists are not the same. All physicians in their specialties are often specializing in their own niche and are up-to-date on that niche.

I've had lisfranc ligament injury. My podiatrist wanted to perform a surgery quickly, which in 90% of cases is advised. I decided to seek a 2nd opinion because I realized she did the X-rays wrong, as she did them non-weight bearing, which is useless if there are no fractures.

The specialist was excited to see me, and up to date on all the lisfranc research. I've had a really bad sprain and he said conservative treatment should be sufficient. It took months but I healed up.

I've had quite a few injuries from playing sports and often found doctors to be "wrong" simply because their knowledge was out of date.

avgDev··on Asana cleared 5 years of engineering work in 2 weeks with Codex
They did it about a month ago for the desktop Codex app. It is actually really confusing and there are many discussions on reddit.

First, the app was called Codex, then they combined them and now the app is called chatGPT, but recently inside the app you can switch between ChatGPT and Codex. lol.

avgDev··on Asana cleared 5 years of engineering work in 2 weeks with Codex
Codex has been renamed to chatGPT.
