avesi··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
There's more nuance here than reducing consumption of beef and dairy. Moving over to regenerative farming practices instead of factory farming will also improve the situation.
avesi··on Melatonin impairs morning cognition in healthy young adults (2023)
In holistic circles, people swear by magnesium. Magnesium glycinate in particular has worked really well for me. It makes sense, because magnesium is a co-factor for converting tryptophan into serotonin, which is turned into the hormone melatonin. So, you could try supporting your body's natural production of sleep hormones by ensuring you have enough available tryptophan and magnesium in your diet.

I know an obese individual who has one and I'm sure having a ventilated bed helps them sleep more comfortably.

There appears to be a bamboo-derived plastic out there with high tensile strength, but I don't think it'd work for this application, because it degrades within 50 days of being buried in soil. I wonder if being in gravel would delay that, due to the different microbes present?

It seems like there are usually biobased solutions out there, but they aren't as cost-effective or easy to procure as the forever plastics, so organizations don't bother with them. Perhaps some kind of incentive would get us moving in the right direction.

Have you seen how the legal system is protecting everyone associated with those crimes, despite how high profile they are?
avesi··on Dr. Seuss books deemed offensive will be delisted from eBay
Historically, culture wasn't so quick to change. Typically, parents would be able to pass down their culture and traditions to children, instead of having society foist an entirely new culture onto their kids that's incompatible with what the parent grew up with.
avesi··on Dr. Seuss books deemed offensive will be delisted from eBay
No, because they are not culturally dominant right now.
avesi··on We Expect 300k Fewer Births Than Usual This Year in the US
I delivered wearing a mask last year, it's honestly security theater. A little floppy surgical mask does nothing to contain the breathing of a laboring woman. I was more upset I couldn't kiss my baby when he was first put in my arms.

Not quite sure why you couldn't have just said, great news, Justice and SebastiAn have recent releases. I'm obviously a little behind :)
avesi··on Letters from House members to cable providers [pdf]
Michael Hastings mysteriously exploded during the Obama Administration, maybe that's what they're referring to.

I'm shocked that any doctor's first recommendation isn't starting to do fertility awareness with ovulation test strips. I got pregnant on the first try with our second kid doing that. It was much more challenging for the first one and we even talked to a doctor who suggested fertility drugs. Thankfully, those weren't necessary in the end. Oddly, after we saw the doctor, we stopped trying as hard to conceive, and then it just happened on accident.

A lot of the Ed Banger crew don't appear to be releasing music anymore as far as I'm aware.

Can an individual bully a nationwide organization?

Yeah, I think there's a middle ground between teaching a child to laugh at injuries and immediately having a protective, sensitive reaction. Personally, I tell my son, "You okay, bud?" in a positive tone and wait to see whether he needs comfort or is ready to get back to playing.

Everyone parents differently. I would be interested to see which culture the "laughing" reaction parents come from.

avesi··on Terraria on Stadia cancelled after developer's Google account gets locked
Google makes ~$90 billion in profit a year, they can shave off a little to open up a few call centers to deal with issues like this. It's seriously shameful at this point.
avesi··on Baby Foods Are Tainted with Dangerous Levels of Heavy Metals [pdf]
As a parent who has been feeding her 9 month old son various baby food products for the past few months, I'm not sure how to respond to this news. Here are my thoughts:

1. If the baby food companies are correct and the contamination is coming from the soil, isn't it safer to buy baby food that's at least tested than feeding my son homemade food when I don't know which farms it comes from?

2. Is this heavy metal soil contamination new? Babies have been fed manufactured purees for several generations already, so you would think we'd be able to observe results of heavy metal consumption in the older population.

3. The report's only recommendation to parents is that they stop feeding foods with heavy metals to babies, but they don't provide a complete list of products to avoid, which any recall would. Why?

I definitely wanted to throw away all my baby food when I read this, but now I feel like it's pointless. Unless I fed my baby a vegan diet from fruits and vegetables I grew on soil I personally tested, I don't think it's possible to avoid these heavy metals entirely. Am I wrong?
