autisticcurio··on Germany begins 3-year universal-basic-income trial
Well as Science continues to steal everyone's privacy, and Capitalism is the defacto remuneration system in place, I think its only fair we get a universal income if Govt's want us to be good little citizens. Considering the current laws in place, like Copyright, Patents etc etc, its very hard for new comers to enter the market and compete, not to mention the massive setup costs to get into some lines of business. Financial cleansing is perfectly legal in this day and age.
autisticcurio··on Apple helped make 'top secret' iPod for US government
Its funny really because I never took my uncle seriously in the 90's when he said I should develop my own Geiger counter amongst other electronic devices. Of course I didnt realise the significance of the fact he had access to the Prestel system which the Govt and Royal Family used for messaging before email became the standard in days when computer hacking was still legal. He also supplied GCHQ with telecomes equipment. Probably contributes to reasons why he broke out of HMP Parkhurst and tried to escape the country. If you wrote his degree titles out in full, it would take half a page of A4 before he could even start writing a letter.

It makes me wonder what he knew back then, but as I cant visit him, if he is ever let out, or I dont get another attempt on my life, maybe one day we'll meet & he'll spill the beans more openly.

Of course, I can get nodules of raw uranium sticking out the soil eroded by the sea along the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, UK. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to make a dirty nuke or even a decent nuke. There is enough information online from reputable sources like the BBC, Youtube showing 50year WW2 US & UK Govt archive footage and interviews in scientific journals who worked on the Manhattan Project and other nuclear projects to piece together the "meta data" in order to make one, including spotting the spurious info which will make you fail if one should attempt to make one.

autisticcurio··on Ask HN: How do you switch off from work, particularly when working from home?
I've never been able to switch off irrespective of whether I worked as an employee in an office somewhere or for myself at home. Maslows Hierarchy of Needs should explain why some people cant switch off, but fortunately as you get older your body fails you so exhaustion or failing health will literally switch you off.

Changing the IMEI is illegal in the UK FYI and has been since 2002. https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2002/31/introduction

Perhaps this legislation gives you a clue about how on the ball some Govt's are when it comes to security matters?

What you are suggesting is a phone that changes its obvious identifiers, but the problem with that is some services may not work, maybe an app purchased from an app store, or the network services you get from your cell provider, like answer phone facilities when you are in a dead zone. So if your phone is acting like a character out of Scanner Darkly, just how will it operate? How will your friends know its you calling if they dont recognise your number?

To have a cellular network that allows random identifiers, you would need a system which accepts prepaid communication time, but in todays age, just like bitcoins is a public ledger how would you convince someone to build a cellular network that accepted untraceable communication time tokens?

Whether you like it or not, Science stole your privacy the day you were born and continues to steal your privacy including your thoughts. Perhaps your best bet for some privacy is to limit your contact with other entities whilst also trying to change the laws for the better but as this requires interaction with other entities, it seems like you want a paradoxical situation to exist.

International standards can also be zero days. For example, the international standard for called ID, uses a dial up modem protocol which means the hardware has to have capabilities to read this data which means the hardware has dialup modem capabilities. So if you can compromise the firmware of the modem, a backdoor into a device is via the very telephone network you later rely on to communicate. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caller_ID#Operation

Chips fall into 3 categories, fused by manufacturer, fused by branding company, or not fused allowing future updates, like bios chips. Even if the chip is fused, a backdoor may still exist, in some cases standard behaviour can be the backdoor.

With zero days appearing in hardware, software and standards, its very easy if you have the knowledge to get a persistent backdoor into a device beit a PinePhone, Librem 5 or Necunos to name just a couple. https://forums.puri.sm/t/comparing-specs-of-upcoming-linux-p... https://tuxphones.com/yet-another-librem-5-and-pinephone-lin... Its probably why people like Cobham, Thales and other openly public military manufacturers make their own kits for militaries around the world. https://www.cobham.com/ https://www.thalesgroup.com/en

I even think its possible to hack the communication systems of the new Lockheed Martin F35, because the manufacturers are walking a logical development path (their mistake), but I've yet to have a go at it, so cant say for sure yet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_C25CwNlVjA

autisticcurio··on NSA Owns Everything (2015)
> The basic premise is false.

>> "Why did we never see it coming?"

You were never taught it in a rote fashion.

Fact is all intelligence services are heavily into their science and control. Its not just computer hacking they are into, they use psychology, medicine and finance to control the population. They have evolved the techniques first used and developed by successive religions since at least as far back as the ancient Sumerians.

Solomon Asch and his conformity experiments https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYIh4MkcfJA which continue to evolve to this day, is a useful tool for keeping people out of trouble, otherwise to quote an ancient religious expression "The devil makes work for idle hands to do" and who wants to go backwards in the Maslow's Hierarchy of needs?

So just like some people do not want to believe that God doesnt exist, some people do not want to believe their country's security services are spying on them 24/7 since the day they were born, hence why the hierarchical structure of society, currently called democracy, but included Royal governance and religious governance in the past, is still the leading way to operate in plain sight after more than 10,000 years of society. Maybe I should be called Mustapha Mond ;-)

autisticcurio··on Vitamin D, part 1: back to basics
Are you sure? Melanin the skin pigment converts 99.9% of UV radiation into heat otherwise it damages deeper layers of the body. I'd say Melanin is there to protect us, so at polar latitudes, the need to protect from UV radiation drops off. Plus things like copper which is one of the chemicals used to make melanin is also used in other processes, for example some of the aromatic neurotransmitters. If you reduce chemicals to some neurotransmitters because its needed elsewhere in the body, what does it do to the brain? Look into hair pigmentation to get a better understanding. Remember diet restricts our intakes so some processes can appear to be rate limiting, when they are not, we are just a complex real-time chemical reaction. Feed any chemical reaction the right amount of chemicals for the environment and you can keep a chemical reaction going forever.

One of my ex bosses had a liver transplant and it meant the rest of his life was spent consuming pills to prevent his immune system from attack the donor liver. I only found this out when I asked a colleague why did he smell funny. Having tried raw liver myself and experiencing the stimulating energising effects compared to cooked liver, I wonder how much folded proteins created by cooking food contributes its own problems. In some cases, if a folded protein gets into a cell, the only remedy for the cell is to have the immune system destroy it. That puts a demand on stem cell generation to fill the void. Its been suggested sweating is the 3rd kidney and that spending 15mins in a 80DegreesC sauna can sweat more toxins than the kidneys can excrete in a 24hr period. Its looking like our sedentary air conditioned office lifestyles could be more harmful than we first thought.

I have found it interesting that Methylation is now being looked at as another form of antioxidant process especially when considering its relationship to cancer progression. When looking at the methylation processes, its clear even the most organic of diets dont contain enough molecules for us humans to maintain healthy methylation, probably because the host animal or plant needs the same molecule to maintain its own life, thus leaving little else for us to use. What constitutes "essential" nutrients is certainly being reconsidered now a days.

autisticcurio··on Immunology Is Where Intuition Goes to Die
I've come to the conclusion the "immunologists" dont know enough and for a very good reason, we are unable to quantify what each and every cell contains chemically and we are unable to measure cell sensing and signally in vivo. So we dont know when a number of cells surrounding a damaged cell or pathogen are using the hydroxyl radical, arguably the most dangerous of the free radicals, to destroy or damage the damaged cell or pathogen.

As we get older, we maintain the ability to sense pathogens in the adaptive immune system, but we fail to launch a suitable response. Studies also show, flu vaccines are a waste of time if the person doesnt have a sufficient amount of B6 in their diet in order for the body to develop an immune system response. In my experience GP's never ask about our diets, they make assumptions and this is dangerous to our health. Now does osteoporosis play its part in a weaken immune system response because the quality of stem cells from the bone marrow is greatly reduced? Not found any studies looking at this angle yet. What about Vitamin D3, the Wellcome Trust in Cambridge announced it had reversed engineered the human genome in Aug 2010, and from the research they found that there were 2776 Vit D Receptors in the human genome, most of which are concentrated around the immune system genes, so how significant is Vit D in immune system responses? How much does Iron in the diet play a part, for example, there is a chemical reaction in the gut which can reduce Ferric iron (State3) into Ferrous iron (State2) before its absorbed, how much does dietary iron and exercise generating hydroxyl radicals play a part in innate immunology? The hydroxyl radical is generally portrayed as a very damaging chemical reaction, yet we do get told to exercise. Likewise what about water only Fasting? When looking at Lysine, its one of only two keto BC amino acids, used to treat cold sores (Herpes) as its been suggested viruses at least the Herpes virus need carbs. Bacteria can die off when there is inadequate nutrition, but they can also go dormant in the body by developing a biofilm. So even though immune cell counts go down when water only fasting, as its no longer having to attack most of the food and drink we consume, does the process of starving of viruses and bacteria make the remaining immune system cells more effective as its only having to concentrated on pathogens in the body.

I'd agree with the article in that immunology is a complex topic, but our lack of high tech scientific instruments limit our knowledge forcing the use of meta data to make conclusions and judgements, and the spooks know all too well that they can get it wrong!

autisticcurio··on Germany plans to dim lights at night to save insects
It depends where in the UK you are driving, I have to wash the car after every major journey > 1hr long because its covered in dead insects and the red, I guess blood, staining the paint. I would say there has been more sightings of wildlife and more insects this year because of lockdown, more hedgehogs seen walking on the roads, more deer, rabbits and plenty of insects especially at night at the moment. So I normally walk my dog with a headtorch at night as its cooler for him to run around off the lead but the insects getting attracted to my headtorch this year is a stupid amount to the point I've stopped taking him out at night. Germany may be onto something by reducing the light sources. Where I live we do have LED street lamps which cast a very definite circle of light on the road, but there is no "side leakage" of light so its darker walking between street lamps. You also dont get any orange glow into your house or bedroom window like the old style street lamps used to do which can keep you awake especially when stressed. The number of small birds nesting in the area has also gone up over the last two years but its nice watching them feeding on insects crawling up and down plants like rose bushes, or hanging onto the side of brick houses getting the odd bug.
autisticcurio··on Vitamin D deficiency and Covid-19 mortality [pdf]
When looking at studies that show Vit D is not helpful, it pays to understand whether the dose is significant or not.

In this case, 2,000UI is not a significant amount.

Someone in the UK can generate 10,000UI - 20,000UI from spending 5 mins in the midday summer sun.

This amount various depending on whether they are in the countryside, where about 25% of UVB radiation is absorbed by plants or sunbathing on a concrete/sand surface can reflect 100% of the UVB upwards. If sunbathing in a polluted area, the low level ozone can also reduce the UVB radiation reaching the ground depending on the pollution levels.

The Vit D Receptor has a zinc finger which is seems to only be structural, so it would seem that without enough zinc in the diet, even the 2776 VDR's in the human body according to the Wellcome Trust, Cambridge Aug 2010, most of which are concentrated around the immune system genes wont function optimally.

A point worth noting about Vit D3 supplements derived from Lanolin, aka Sheep Fat/Oil, as most sheep are dipped in organophosphates (Nerve Agents), there is a chance that you could be exposing yourself to harmful residual levels of organophosphates. I've yet to see any legislation which monitors this in Vit D supplements in any region of the world (if you know of any please reply so I can update), so megadosing Vit D3 supplements could be increasing the tiny residual amounts of organophosphates to significant and possibly harmful levels. In a study on different Vit D3 specific supplements, the amounts quoted also varied significantly.

Its also worth noting that due to the way patents work, manufacturers of Vit D serum levels measuring equipment use different methods and markers to calculate your serum 25(O)HD levels, 10 years on, the medical equipment is still not standardised as noted here. https://ods.od.nih.gov/Research/vdsp.aspx In my own limited tests using NHS equipment, the amounts measured varied by 45%.

Like all fat soluble vitamins, D3 (25(O)HD) also has a half life of about 28days so you could do what I have done in the past and purchase some UVB reptile flo tubes and bask under them during the winter months for a few hours a day to monitor serum levels. https://www.reptilecentre.com/blog/2016/09/difference-t8-t5-... If you want to know how UVB levels vary around the world, this is a good resource http://www.uvguide.co.uk/ reptiles like some other mammals also need UVB radiation for good health.

I could go on, I dont agree with some professors in this field, sometimes science seems to be a scientific Ash conformity experiment which can prevent you from becoming a qualified expert and harm your health but as always with health, there is no panacea and a variety of factors influence our health. For example if your kidneys and/or liver are not healthy you wont be able to make as much Vit D. Diet also plays a part, but if you should find yourself getting into hypercalcaemia territory, increase your Vit K intake, eg eat Brussel Sprouts, and increase your Leucine and Lysine intake as these keto amino acids also stimulate all type collagen synthesis and can reduce the calcium in the blood stream.

As the airways are the main entry point, it would seem logical to increase Vit A intake because this is required by all epithilial cells as is choline for cell membrane integrity, and choline also helps to reduce the pressure in alveoli to facilitate gas exchange which also increases physical performance but could make it easier to breath when on a ventilator and Choline also helps clean the blood through methylation. Epithelial cells secrete things, so those two supplements will enable the lungs and airway secretions to work properly producing enough functional mucous in order to trap pathogens before it even gets into the lungs where the real damage can take place. Like I said it would seem logical to do this, but I'm not an expert, just a self taught IT geek like many of you guys. :-)

autisticcurio··on Glucosamine Supplementation Reduces All-Cause Mortality: Study
Every time you move, the body releases adrenaline, so you are not far wrong in your line of thought. The adrenal glands produces around 180 different hormones including adrenaline, so protecting or even attempting to improve their function would be a logical natural pain killing route to take. Hint they are layer upon layer of epithelial cells. Of course other factors like the body attacking itself is also a problem which the adrenal glands alone cant "fix", for example too much sodium increases the Th17 cells to the point they start attacking the body. T cells from Thymus, B cells from bone marrow. However considering civilisations & Religions have existed for over 10,000years dating back to Sumerian times, observation was the only "scientific" methods available at the time, and Religions had to keep their followers healthy for the next attack, so looking into different religious fasting methods could also improve health outcomes. The world record for a water only fast, still in the Guinness book of world records is 382days, carried out in 1971 at the University of Dundee. Having done an 18day water only fast myself and felt like a teenager again, I'd highly recommend investigating it to others. A US movement in the 1950's called the Hygienists and Shelton were big advocates. Also consider the immune system attacks the food we eat, so as our immune cell count falls during a fast, are there still more immune cells now working solely removing damaged cells from the body? Its suggested viruses need carbs as noted by the use of the Keto BCAA Lysine for Cold Sores, bacteria builds biofilms when they go dormant in the body but are not impenetrable to the attacking immune system either. So there seems to be some merit with a water only fast for some, however sudden death is a risk to those with undiagnosed conditions, a bit like we see with some seemingly healthy people dying of covid. Either way, the human body, in fact any lifeform is an extremely complex biochemical and electrical real time puzzle where many chemicals play their part in lengthening life spans or shortening life spans. I wouldnt bet my life on just one supplement, unlike Linus Pauling and Vit C, its effects like all supplements, need to be put in context in the scheme of things keeping us alive, healthy and happy.
