aurbano··on IPVanish “No-Logging” VPN Led Homeland Security to Comcast User
I understand your point, but I believe in this case it doesn't apply necessarily because Sweden/Europe are only concerned with privacy related data.

Mullvad gets around this by not storing customer information. As others have pointed out, your "account" is just a long number. You top it up any way you want (including sending cash in an envelope if you are truly paranoid).

So I do believe that it stands a better chance of being fully anonymous & private than a US counterpart.

I've recently switched to Mullvad from PIA, mainly because it's not US based and they "sound" more privacy focused.

I quote sound because as another commenter mentioned, without trusted third party audits it's all marketing...

aurbano··on Jails are replacing visits with video calls–inmates and families hate it
I would love a popular movie (maybe even one for kids) where at some point through the movie we get to see things from the "bad guy"'s point of view and discover that it actually makes sense, leaving the viewer undecided on whether they support the good or the bad guy.

It would be interesting to see children struggle with the moral dilemma, is there any movie like this already that I'm not realising?

aurbano··on A growing number of philosophers are conducting experiments to test arguments
I believe what he meant is that all your “truths” are the same as the believe in the example. You have reasons to believe that those things are true, and certain observations made by you corroborated your hypothesis, leading you to conclude they were true.

For instance, I have 5 fingers in each of my hands: you see them, you use them, so they must exist and be real. I’m no philosopher, but I suspect their arguments would go towards how can you trust your senses and perception to prove ideas about reality...

aurbano··on Require multiple reviewers for pull requests
Could you describe your coaching approach? That sounds interesting, and is often a difficult problem to solve
aurbano··on How the US Pushed Sweden to Take Down the Pirate Bay
> hosted outside of any jurisdictions

I'm curious about this - does it mean hosting in a country that "doesn't care", or is there some other option that I'm unaware of?

aurbano··on Gaming Robinhood’s Free Stock Promotion – Or, How to Blow $350
I agree with you, and I should’ve phrased it differently to get the point across better.

I really enjoy looking at something from an unusual perspective. The upside to you if you’re referring people is what you mentioned, the ability to sell something without any risk or upfront payments. So in reality its a purely symbiotic relationship...

aurbano··on Gaming Robinhood’s Free Stock Promotion – Or, How to Blow $350
Referral links are the most amazing financial product I've ever seen.

I'll start from the end: Companies get FREE advertising from YOU, and unless you get them an actual customer, they don't pay.

Effectively companies are “forcing” you to advertise for free (forced by your desire to "make easy money"), and then they pay you a commission if you get them a paying customer.

And you may fail to realise that you are already paying them by placing their ad in your page. Because in order for you to get money, you need to get them a click that ends in a paying customer. You could have pointed that customer to something you owned and theoretically you could have received the full value of their purchase. So losing that is a payment you make in order to "refer" a customer... Its crazy!

aurbano··on PlainJS – Vanilla JavaScript Repository
Those are good links to interesting discussions on the topic, I guess UglifyJS is better than nothing although you're right there.

Are you aware of any alternative that can do tree shaking? Reading those issues' comments there is a link to babel-webpack-tree-shaking [1] which seems to do it?

aurbano··on PlainJS – Vanilla JavaScript Repository
Dead code elimination (i.e. UglifyJS) should do away with most unused code from a library - so with a proper build system this shouldn't be a big concern...
aurbano··on Announcing TypeScript 2.2
I've used both extensively in IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate. It's slightly harder to setup than TS, and it feels less mature - but it's very hard to explain why with concrete examples.

I did have to turn off code completion based on flow, because it slowed down the IDE noticeable (they do warn of this next to the setting...), but I hope that support will improve in the next versions, as flow gets more mature.

aurbano··on Say Cheese: a snapshot of the massive DDoS attacks coming from IoT cameras
So they don't do hosting... What you've quoted just explains how they act as a layer in front of the actual server
aurbano··on WhatsApp, Used by 100M Brazilians, Shut Down Nationwide Today by a Single Judge
WhatsApp uses IP addresses directly to route the traffic, but you could still use a VPN. The problem is that unless everyone else uses one you won't be able to talk to them...
aurbano··on Grd – A CSS grid framework using Flexbox in 512 bytes gzipped
> What I am bitching about is that I can't get around NPM/Bower and other bullshit, I have to use it for a lot of these libs, regardless of me needing them.

You do realize that downloading the CSS/JS for these libs is trivial, nothing is forcing you to use Bower/NPM/<insert lib management tool here>.

aurbano··on Mozilla Webrender: rendering any webpage at several hundred FPS
It uses SVG, so it will speed it up a lot. Unfortunately for things like a force layout in a graph, the main bottleneck will be JavaScript calculating the positions.
aurbano··on Show HN: Function of Beauty (YC W16) – Personalized Shampoo
It looks really good, I can't wait to give it a go.

Any idea of when you'll start shipping worldwide? I'm based in the UK.

aurbano··on The Real Problem with Lunch
"I bet I could get your kids to eat roasted portobello mushroom goat cheese lasagna"

It's scary to think that we are advancing towards a world where kids could say no to this...

aurbano··on Regular Expression Crossword Puzzle
After spending most of the morning solving it manually I was thinking about how an algorithm might work for this.

Perhaps converting each regex into a DFA, but there are too many dependencies with all the other regexes. Any ideas on how to avoid brute forcing it?
