aurareturn··on Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf]
It's competition after all. If your academic colleague doesn't care and is leveraging ChatGPT in a big way and is making progress, you'll start to feel the pressure.
aurareturn··on Mistral raises €3B
How much work did you go into looking for evidence?
aurareturn··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
A working Lean proof doesn't care what the incentives are.
aurareturn··on OpenAI's AGI number came from a harness, not the model
Even without the harness, it's an absolute massive leap. 2x Opus 5 and 6x GPT 5.6.
aurareturn··on Mom found guilty of abuse for letting 5-year-old walk outside alone speaks out
It actually warmed my heart seeing little children walk home alone in central Tokyo. I hope people here never feel unsafe to do this.

Feeling safe enough to do this is an absolute blessing.

aurareturn··on Mom found guilty of abuse for letting 5-year-old walk outside alone speaks out
Funny I'm in Tokyo right now, in a central popular party tourist area. I just saw an all girls school with kids around 5-6 years old walk home alone after school.
aurareturn··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
Yep. I use it locally for rendering PDFs via LLM tool use.

Are we still calculated $200 subscription token spend based on their highly inflated API token cost and then concluding that they must be losing money on all $200 subscriptions?

So what makes their AI business fundamentally unsustainable?
aurareturn··on Mistral raises €3B
Small efficient models are commodities.
aurareturn··on Mistral raises €3B
Why is it not sustainable when Anthropic has already had a profitable quarter?
aurareturn··on Mistral raises €3B

If their margins were anywhere near this good, they wouldn't need to raise so much money so often.
Why not? They are reinvesting into growth. There isn't a clear winner yet and Anthropic wants to make sure it is one of them. Taking a profit now while letting OpenAI take your marketshare and train better models is not very smart.
aurareturn··on Mistral raises €3B
The point is that the model is already immensely profitable. There is no fundamental reason why AI isn't profitable. It already is.

Insane competition does not last forever. When chip manufacturing first started, there were dozens of companies that had fabs that made compute chips. Nowadays, only TSMC is viable. Samsung and Intel survived because of geopolitics.

aurareturn··on Mistral raises €3B
Impressive doesn't mean sustainable.

We're also seeing behemoths like Google and Meta both fail to keep up with OpenAI and Anthropic. Microsoft has given up on SOTA training. Loads of once promising LLM training companies are no longer relevant at the SOTA stage such as Cohere, Mistral.

I've said this countless times but SOTA LLM market looks like a classic monopoly/duopoly market over time. Each generation requires magnitudes more resources to train and you can only compete if you've made enough money on your previous generation.

aurareturn··on Mistral raises €3B
AI is profitable. Gross margins are high.

The only reason OpenAI and Anthropic are making a loss is due to training new models to keep up with competition - not because the industry is flawed in terms of business model.

aurareturn··on Mistral raises €3B
Anthropic is growing 10x revenue every year.

They're likely over $80b ARR by now. They'll be at $800b ARR next year at the same rate. Let's say their growth gets cut down to 3x instead of 10x - that's still $240b ARR by this time next year.

When you are growing so fast, you don't need to make a net profit. You just need to make sure your unit economics are good - which it seems like they are given reports that their gross margins are at 60-70%.

I’m still looking for no-moatists to logically explain why there is no moat in SOTA LLMS.

That paper released by a lone Google employee 3 years ago still misguiding people it seems.

Is there money in niche models?
aurareturn··on An Alien Mind
You're likely using a ton of software that was written by AI that you don't even know about.

You only notice the sloppy ones.

aurareturn··on Keep Our Servers Running
Archive is likely one of the top traffic destinations on the internet. Your local library is likely not.

Maybe they want to hire someone full-time is so they don't have to have a policy of whenever they feel like it?

Having a reliable service is likely one of the reasons why their donors donate in the first place. Why do organizations and wealthy people still want to donate if the service goes down for 2 days and no one cares? Why would this kind of non-profit attract top volunteers in the first place?

aurareturn··on Keep Our Servers Running
Ok how about 6am? 7pm?

The point is that someone needs to bring the service back up and they can't rely on volunteers to do it whenever they feel like it.

aurareturn··on Keep Our Servers Running
You should definitely apply and sign a contract. They should charge you money if you don't show up at 3am in an outage.

All it takes is one emergency and the volunteer person doesn't show up for the non profit to want to hire a full time person. This event has likely already occurred at Archive.

aurareturn··on Keep Our Servers Running
Pick 2 out of 3 for these kinds of volunteer work:

- Capable

- Reliable

- Free

You going to be on call at 3am to bring services back up doing it for free?

aurareturn··on Will anybody use AI as much as coders do?
Yes. Did no one see Astra using a drawing app to just draw someone in the UI?

That's going to spend an enormous amount of tokens, likely an order of magnitude more than coding. Computer use will use a ton of tokens since input videos and images are much more costly to inference than input text.

Imagine an AI using Unreal Engine 5 to assist in making a video game.

Real world physical robots will likely use another order of magnitude more tokens than computer use.

So the progression is something like this:

ChatGPT --> coding --> computer use --> physical world use

Each progression will significantly more.

aurareturn··on Asahi Linux on M3
Apple wouldn't want to be liable or responsible if someone implements an OS based on their incomplete and imperfect and outdated spec and gets hacked.
aurareturn··on Asahi Linux on M3
It idles at 2-3GB but when your apps need the RAM, does it free up system memory so that it's closer to 500MB?

Then go buy AI stocks if you think we are the horse.

Some will be horses, yes. Most will be riders.

aurareturn··on Formalizing Fermat's Last Theorem
It doesn’t seem so inefficient to me. It seems incredibly efficient in workplace productivity.
aurareturn··on Formalizing Fermat's Last Theorem
Well, it's taken 4 billion years for life to evolve into humans to be able to do math. That's a lot of resources, right?

Likewise, LLMs also needed the same amount of evolution.

My point is that it's silly to make these comparisons on resources. A single SOTA trained LLM isn't just doing advanced math research. It's used by hundreds of millions or even billions daily for various tasks. It's just a tool humans invented.

Lately, I feel like people are abusing arxiv.org as a blog platform to publish their opinions instead of scientific research.
