aufhebung··on Ted Turner has died
isn't that land part of a scheme to farm bison and save them from extinction? it would make sense for his will to specify that it keeps being used for this.
aufhebung··on No, Windows Start does not use React
The recommended section using React Native is honestly more strange and confusing than if they had just used React for the whole thing. It doesn't seem like a particularly complex UI element, it would be easier to just develop it using the already used native APIs.
aufhebung··on Is Twitter/X Down
everything except spaces is out for me
aufhebung··on Ask HN: How many of you still have a Facebook account?
Facebook marketplace has basically supplanted gumtree as the place to buy and sell things in Sydney. Its the only reason i have an account
aufhebung··on Yuzu Progress Report December 2022
>A used Nintendo switch is less expensive than a gaming computer. Clearly you never used the 'Mum I need a good computer for school' trick.
aufhebung··on Excess deaths in all age groups
It seems like maybe a year or two ago this guy was fairly reasonable, and gave what seemed to be genuine opinions on the benefits and drawbacks of lockdown strategies. Sad to see him succumb to audience capture and make what seem to be willful misinterpretations of data (outlined well in jiggawatts' comment). If I as a second year undergrad who has never taken a stats course can see these statistical problems, then a PhD with multiple bachelors definitely can.
aufhebung··on Replit Mobile App
I don't see why you would implement google docs like multi person editing. There's a reason basically every VCS has discrete commits and anybody who has ever coded anything knows why.
aufhebung··on “Tough to forge” digital driver’s license is easy to forge
Some bars and clubs require you to use the app to scan a QR code for entry if you use a digital license. Other places you can use screenshot of your twin's drivers license because you forgot it and didn't have it set up.
aufhebung··on How many bots are on Twitter? Question is tough to answer and misses the point
Isn't the number of bots primarily relevant to advertisers? This article entirely misses why the question is even worth asking.
aufhebung··on AU Border Force searched 822 phones in 2021 despite no power to demand passcodes
This may come as a shock to many who use 2FA and have 15 digit passcodes like me, but a lot of people don't have any sort of lock on their phones.
aufhebung··on OpenCL on Metal – what if clvk works?
Now all we need is a way to run CUDA code on OpenCL
aufhebung··on Britain being forced to go cashless 'against its will'
I've heard the same with China and WeChat Pay even pre pandemic. This is just from second hand anecdotes though so take it with a grain of salt.
aufhebung··on Arguing Without Warning
It seems interesting that the norms argued for here are contrary to the norms in a field like journalism, where journalists have an obligation to ask relevant people for comment. I'm not arguing for one approach over the other, but it would be interesting to look at the development of journalistic norms for counterarguments.
aufhebung··on Silicon Valley’s supposed obsession with tech-free private schools (2019)
Where he speaks from intuition I speak from personal experience. Through my entire High School experience iPads and computers were more often used to play Clash Royale or Tetris in class than used for actual work.
aufhebung··on Software is no longer sold; it's adopted
This is probably also why both companies give out free licenses to primary and high school students (at least in Australia). It causes a positive feedback loop, where their software (e.g. photoshop) becomes the industry standard because most people have been taught to use it, and it is taught in schools because it is the industry standard.
aufhebung··on BiglyBT is a feature filled, open source, ad-free, BitTorrent client
I think he might be trying to point out the fact that it ought to point you to your package manager, and not some dodgy shell script.
aufhebung··on BiglyBT is a feature filled, open source, ad-free, BitTorrent client
Why would I use this over Transmission or qBittorrent?
aufhebung··on Firefox removed Yandex search option
Can't you just manually put yandex search in? Seems like an odd place to be putting a red line.
aufhebung··on Veloren is a multiplayer voxel RPG written in Rust
If I put a 5 year old in front of a polygon based 3D modelling program they will have no idea what to do, and even if I teach them the tools they will have trouble. If I put a 5 year old in front of Minecraft they will eventually figure out how to build stuff. I hope this answers your question.
aufhebung··on CD sales grow for first time since 2004
I may or may not have torrented many films available on Netflix (which I pay for) because of this issue.
aufhebung··on Russia to legalize software piracy
Putin has a 70% approval rating in the same way Stalin had near 100%.
aufhebung··on “The NYT ruined Wordle ” – a great case study in confirmation bias
First they came for Joe Rogan

And I did not speak out

Because I was not Joe Rogan

Then they came for Dr. Seuss

And I did not speak out

Because I was not Dr. Seuss

Then they came for Wordle

And I did not speak out

Because I was not Wordle

Then they came for me

And there was no one left

To speak out for me

aufhebung··on “The NYT ruined Wordle ” – a great case study in confirmation bias
>Why is the small part of the population that overreacts to everything allowed to dictate what's acceptable for everyone else?

As opposed to you, who is definitely not overreacting to a word game.

aufhebung··on CAD files for the external shell (surface topology) of Steam Deck
I haven't played it, but this video gives the impression that it is much less polished in comparison to its predecessors. However it could just be nitpicking. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdRLNUGmFC8
aufhebung··on Words known better by males than females, and vice versa
I would wager that some percent of them confused it for thermostat.
aufhebung··on Yuzu: Nintendo Switch Emulator
There is an experimental PS4 emulator that ran using QEMU, taking advantage of the fact that the PS4 is x86. Something similar could be done for M1 and ARM.

aufhebung··on The Windows 11 taskbar is an annoying step backward
I've heard it improved with Windows 11. It used to be the one think I pointed to when talking about the downward trajectory of Windows.
aufhebung··on Wine 7.0
As someone acquainted with linux gaming, the general rule of thumb is that anything without anticheat works.
aufhebung··on Wikipedia Editors Have Voted Not to Classify NFTs as Art, Sparking Outrage
When we say pyramid schemes are not sales businesses, or NFTs are not art, I think we sneak value judgements into what should be objective definitions. If we were to have a definition of a sales business in the dictionary, it would not read: 'A business based around sales. Except for pyramid schemes because they are bad.'
aufhebung··on What's your take on Twitter's use of Parasitic Dark Patterns?
This happened to me without posting or even liking, retweeting, replying, or really interacting in any way other than following people. I know Twitter has fallen into controversy about bots often, but some calibration of sensitivity needs to be done
