atupis··on SoftBank Reveals $6.5B Loss from Uber, WeWork Turmoil
is this a sign of bubble popping? although I am not sure can this spread outside of Saudis and Softbank.
atupis··on Build Your Own Thrust Vectored Rockets for Vertical Landings Like SpaceX
Second this it is been awsome to follow his journey.
atupis··on Nokia’s collapse turned a sleepy town in Finland into an internet wonderland
Not living Oulu but living Finland. Oulu is pretty remote even in Finland's standards so people don't move out so easily. That created a situation where startups had suddenly lots of highly skilled engineers to hire cheaply and that created a boom in the town.
atupis··on Google, in Rare Stumble, Posts 23% Decline in Profit
>presenting even worse result than usual, and instead of being able to customize the search to fix that, you end up with Bing-like results giving you crap you explicitly tried to exclude.

Is this some side effect from user-tailored search experience, for me personally Google still gives better results than eg DGG or Bing.

atupis··on DuckDuckGo Terminal Interface
Nice does it support piping results to firefox?
atupis··on Steve Wozniak: 'I've given up' on Level 5
Problem is that it is not very good pr if somebody dies or hurts badly every time cars encounter a "new" situation.
atupis··on Planetary 'autopsies' indicate worlds like Earth common in the cosmos
There are definitely lots of hints that there is live in Mars, but not a smoking gun yet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_on_Mars#Possible_biosigna...
atupis··on To hire neurodiverse workers, one firm got rid of job interviews
Yeah, you would probably add some weighted sampling to it eg overweight those candidates who have lots of Github contributions.
atupis··on To hire neurodiverse workers, one firm got rid of job interviews
>PS: It’s odd, but I suspect a random process may actually work better because the great people actively looking for jobs are likely to be bad at getting them.

Somebody should almost build a toy startup around that random process eg Chatroulette for hiring. that might make sense.

atupis··on Machine learning in UK financial services
It is more like do you specialist x, eg if you have fullstack engineer do you really need frontend developer or DevOps engineer, generally no but there is case where specialist might make big differences.
atupis··on Uptime 15,364 days – The Computers of Voyager [video]
Is there somewhere leader board for uptime? I found subreddit on topic https://www.reddit.com/r/uptimeporn/
atupis··on Gitlab: don't discuss politics at work
Problem is that is only a carrier creates a barrier to monetize the platform through ads. Nobody with a serious brand doesn't want to see ads next to nazi propaganda and some kinky furry porn.
atupis··on Reddit, where chaos thrives, tries to clean up to attract ads from big brands
I think problem with Reddit advertising is that you at least could not before doing laser-focused campaigns like try to advertise people who are subscribed to ReasonML and sysadmin subreddits.
atupis··on Writing Is Thinking: Learning to Write with Confidence
Yeah not native and Grammarly is god sent. The only big minus is that it will send all my writing to the cloud. Is there similar but less intrusive addons?
atupis··on Which companies are using Erlang, and why?
I think Whatsapp served "at peak" like 450 million users with only 32 engineers.
atupis··on Which companies are using Erlang, and why?
I have never programmed Erlang but it feels like it is the currently only language that is some kind of secret weapon. It has similar aura than Lisp had before that with Erlang you can do stuff beyond "normal" languages.
atupis··on At Tech’s Leading Edge, Worry About a Concentration of Power
And so Deeplearningcoin was born.
atupis··on Colorado Town Offers 1 Gbps for $60 After Years of Battling Comcast
Finland paying 9€ for 100Mbps.
atupis··on Chinese military entering Shenzen, just across the border with Hong Kong
https://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/01/opinion/sunday/friedman-w... and particulary last chapter of Why Nations Fail.
atupis··on Chinese military entering Shenzen, just across the border with Hong Kong
Thing is that China is nearing point where it has to let creative destruction happen to grow more and it is very hard to achieve under current model.
atupis··on Recycling clothing gathers steam
I have noticed that t-shirts that are made from recycled cotton are much more durable and doesn't shrink same way than normal.
atupis··on Learning Chess at 40 (2016)
There was pretty good econtalk about this topic http://www.econtalk.org/david-epstein-on-mastery-specializat... . But generally there are these sports with very narrow skills like chess which you has to specialize very early. Then there is these sports with very width skills like soccer where generally get best outcomes when you specialize rather late like 16 year old.

How about if you flip phone vertically app user can see what tablets and computers see.
atupis··on Ask HN: Do you think technology progress will flatten out 100 years from now
There is strong case that innovation peaked 50s and has been slowing down since https://www.technologyreview.com/s/601199/tech-slowdown-thre... .
atupis··on Ask HN: What jobs can a software engineer take to tackle climate change?
Get high as possible salary and donate as much as possible to https://www.rainforestcoalition.org or other nonprofit.
atupis··on 100% renewables doesn’t equal zero-carbon energy, and the difference is growing
There is also realpolitik reason why it would not happen. widespread fission reactors means more countries have access to nuclear weapons.
atupis··on Superconductivity near room temperature
Also batteries https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superconducting_magnetic_energ...
atupis··on Crossfit Inc. suspends use of Facebook and associated properties
It probably depends gym, at least gym where I did go did not do anything super dangerous and it was more powerlifting, bodyweight exercises and some kettlebells exercises. Most dangerous thing was probably box jumps and there instructor advice to step down instead of jumping down.
atupis··on A critical step to reduce climate change
Heating or cooling of buildings is probably easiest way do that in large scale.
atupis··on America's loneliness epidemic: A systemic risk to organizations
Social media where you "speak with" sounds fantastic, but how you would do it Slack/IRC is one way do it, those have usually tightly knitted community but there is definitely other more creative ways do that.
