atom_arranger··on Patagonia Is Boycotting Facebook, Urges Other Companies to Do the Same
I’m saying that. The insult is not appreciated.

Most companies are guilty of this, doesn’t make it right.

I’m not saying Pantagonia might not be a better company environmentally than others, just mentioning that I find their usage of plastics in clothing objectionable.

I also do find it hypocritical that they sell plastic products while doing some kind of boycotting of companies producing raw materials for plastics.

atom_arranger··on Patagonia Is Boycotting Facebook, Urges Other Companies to Do the Same
Some people are saying that.

Plastic shouldn't be used where it isn't needed, e.g. vests.

atom_arranger··on The HTML video element needs to go back on the drawing board
I think it would be better if browsers implemented allowing video formats for src and srcset, just treat them the same as gif files.

Safari does this (at least the src), but nobody can really use it since Chrome doesn’t.

There’s a huge thread somewhere of devs arguing that Chrome should implement. I would fall on the implement side. If we want to replace gifs with better formats browsers should make it easy.

atom_arranger··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch review: Apple’s mighty Macs
I was just guessing at this, but it seems I might be correct: https://appleinsider.com/articles/21/10/19/apps-can-use-full...

Not a big fan of the notch, but I do like consistency.

atom_arranger··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch review: Apple’s mighty Macs
There is a nice symmetry in the fact that all apps/websites will need to take into account safe area insets to display properly on any apple device in all display modes.
atom_arranger··on React Docs Beta – rewritten with hooks and interactive examples
The reason you end up with render loops is usually because you didn’t memo something. If you memo everything you can avoid that issue.
atom_arranger··on React Docs Beta – rewritten with hooks and interactive examples
The post points out that given memoization in many cases avoids serious perf/functional issues not memoizing may be considered premature optimization.
atom_arranger··on What do I need to read to be a CSS dev?
Tailwind is almost CSS. Most Tailwind classes only apply one CSS property/value.

If you needed to code the same thing without Tailwind you can easily convert the syntax.

I would agree more with “Bootstrap is not CSS.”

atom_arranger··on PostgreSQL adds support for OUT parameters in Procedures
I've used Postgraphile to do this. GraphQL not REST, same idea though, autogenerated API from stored procedures, it's pretty neat.

Pros:

  - Can query DB multiple times, conditionally, without making multiple trips to DB, since your code for a certain procedure is all in the DB.
  - Procedures are accessible using any DB client.
Cons:

  - Version control of these procedures is not as nice as normal code. Graphile Starter has some tools for snapshotting the DB schema that help, but the DX is still not great.
  - Scaling your DB is more costly than scaling compute, so from a cost/scaling perspective this might not be the best idea.
atom_arranger··on Working age population is declining
This might indicate the wages still aren’t high enough for people who have other options.

Construction work is hard on your body and there is a risk of injury. You would be risking long term damage to your lungs from exposure to cement dust.

These jobs should probably pay even more, and they should be made safer/more comfortable.

atom_arranger··on Ask HN: Solo-preneurs, how do you DevOps to save time?
I had a K8s setup running on Google cloud, using their managed database service. This was kind of nice, but expensive, cost ~$100 a month, and I was using very low specs.

I have multiple projects, none of them making money currently, so $100/month for each basic app is not good.

I switched to using Dokku on Vultr, $12 a month. You can easily create Postgres databases and link them to Docker apps. I haven't bothered to setup CD yet but it looks like it should be simple, for now I just push to it when I want to deploy. Liking this setup so far.

For frontend I use Netlify, I use their redirects to proxy the backend.

atom_arranger··on The Shocking Immaturity of JavaScript
A part of this is that the tooling mostly depends on huge trees of dependencies.

If top level tools devs interacted with bundled more of their deps things might be less likely to break, at the cost of a bigger node_modules folder.

Right now you occasionally run into situations where Webpack or ESLint stops working right because is-even released a bad patch update.

atom_arranger··on The Fastest Path to the CEO Job, According to a 10-Year Study (2018)
I don't entirely want to be CEO, what I want is ultimate control over things I'm interested in, which is definitely not everything involved in being CEO.

If I say "no that would be bad, goes against my ethics, increases tech debt too much, bad for UX, etc." I don't want anybody to override me, even though generally decisions ultimately fall on the CEO.

atom_arranger··on If we prefer trad architecture by a large margin, why did we stop making it?
I think part of it is because the classical styles have become easier to mass produce.

An ornate dress or complex molding can be churned out at a rapid pace these days, and knowing that cheapens the effect of it.

Due to automation complex construction and details are cheap, what is expensive is precision and high quality materials.

I guess some of it is also that we can’t even bring ourselves to do things how they really used to be done. We easily produce cheap imitations but won’t create the real thing.

300 hand sculpted marble statues lining a hall, compared to 300 computer generated 3D printed “sculptures” lining a hall. The idea is similar but the second one likely won’t have the same quality or impact.

atom_arranger··on We deserve better than Confluence and Notion
Atlassian acquired Trello 4 years ago. Still seems to be doing better than Jira is, although I feel it’s maybe still slightly worse than when it was acquired.

I imagine if a company using Trello wants more features they probably just say “use Jira”.

atom_arranger··on Why I Use Nim instead of Python for Data Processing
I guess the best thing would be having a formatter that can switch the style for you locally. I don’t think Nim has this currently, would be neat if they did.
atom_arranger··on No, we won’t have a video call for that
This seems about right.

Personally I dislike getting on calls for stuff. I think the clarity of text is much better, and the fact that it’s asynchronous means I can look things up while responding, meaning my responses are more high quality.

It’s super frustrating being like this and then interacting with people who don’t want to write things out clearly or don’t want to read my responses, and then ask me to “hop on a call”.

atom_arranger··on Practical Front-End Architecture
Relay has very good support for optimistic updates on the client.

When developing an app recently I added an artificial 1s delay to server responses (during development), but because of optimistic updates you would never notice it was there.

atom_arranger··on NIH-funded research to address rising male infertility
The linked site does suggest a reason Massachusetts would have less overweight people, based on their exposure to environmental contaminants.
atom_arranger··on I ruin developers’ lives with my code reviews and I'm sorry
Sometimes I’ll look over PRs early on, notice the entire approach is bad, and leave a comment.

People often got annoyed, they would say their PR isn’t ready yet.

That’s fair, I kind of understand, my intention was to just save them time going down an incorrect path though, because I know it’s going to be difficult to convince them later they need to rework days of work.

Not sure what the solution is.

atom_arranger··on Don't build a general-purpose API to power your own front end
Use a networking library like relay, or react-query and 90% of your state management problems go away in most apps.

Your state is on the DB, those libs handle fetching and caching it.

Honorable mention, haven’t used it myself but there is RTK Query too, which is a library like those, but based on Redux, could be easier to debug.

atom_arranger··on It's not a labor shortage – it's a wage and workers rights shortage
If UBI is implemented we may be able to do away with minimum wage, at which point small businesses could possibly offer better (more interesting, less stressful) working conditions for less money, it’s possible people might go for that.

Right now companies must make $X per employee per hour. If their business cannot do that it’s deemed that it’s not productive enough and should not exist.

atom_arranger··on Deno Deploy Beta 2
API development. People consider the performance of Node good enough, and they can use the same language for frontend and backend.
atom_arranger··on Toxic ‘forever chemicals’ contaminate indoor air at worrying levels
> Further, because there have been billions of pieces of nonstick cookware in use around the world for decades, if there were negative health effects we would probably notice them by now.

Dropping testosterone levels and sperm counts, increasing levels of obesity. I think we're seeing the health effects, although as mentioned it is hard to pick apart exactly what is having what impact. Our lives are flooded with plastic, I suppose non-stick cookware is kind of like a drop in the bucket.

> This is not the case with teflon cookware. There is no detectable PFAS in nonstick cookware, nor are there verifiable reports of health effects from its use, in spite of the millions or billions of such uses happening every day over decades.

I would need a lot of evidence to be convinced there's not a risk. I think we'll look back on plastics a similar way to how we look back on our naivety about things like cigarettes, lead, asbestos, etc.

> I guarantee you're not able to avoid PFAS-treated upholstery, carpeting, and other home furnishings. And depending on where you live, chances are good that you ingest significant amounts of PFAS in your drinking water. If you've ever eaten fast food, the wrapper it came in was probably coated in PFAS. Due to these and other sources, I guarantee you have measurable levels of PFAS in your blood and tissues.

I don't dispute this. I just try to avoid plastics when it's practical. As mentioned I would like to have regulations passed to reduce sources. I would not like to give up and say "well alright I'm being so poisoned already, might as well risk having a bit more by using non-stick pans".

I also don't want to support the manufacturing of these chemicals generally. Putting aside the end consumer, the manufacturing seems very likely to have been harmful to people, and chemicals from the manufacturing could also end up spreading in the environment.

Non-stick pans may not be the absolute worst thing to come out of the plastics industry, but getting rid of them still seems like a step in the right direction.

atom_arranger··on Toxic ‘forever chemicals’ contaminate indoor air at worrying levels
Obesity rates going up may actually be a side effect of widespread PFAS exposure (some of which is possibly from these non-stick pans).

atom_arranger··on Toxic ‘forever chemicals’ contaminate indoor air at worrying levels
> No, we have lots of long term information about nonstick cookware. People forget we've been using nonstick cookware since the 1950's.

That’s not a study.

> You won't be able to come up with a falsifiable hypothesis, because our PFC exposure via other routes is so high.

We’re so poisoned by these chemicals it’s impossible to run a study to figure out if one possible source of them specifically is measurably poisoning us. Maybe we should consider banning them, or just avoiding them in general.

> PFAS surfactants are used in the manufacture of the coatings, but it boils off when the coating is baked

See sibling comments.

> if you handle a water resistant jacket and then eat a sandwich, you'll ingest measureable quanities of PFAS

I try to avoid synthetic fabrics when I can, so in my case it’s not like your lifeguard scenario.

I also think the government should step in to limit the use of plastics generally.

atom_arranger··on Toxic ‘forever chemicals’ contaminate indoor air at worrying levels
There aren't any long term studies comparing people who cook with non-stick vs stainless or cast iron, so we can only guess about long term and population level effects based on limited information.

I personally would not take the risk given the benefit is just a pan that things stick to less. Medical uses are more justifiable.

atom_arranger··on Apple proposes adding "model" element to HTML that displays 3D content
I see a future where with some changes made to improve A11Y webpages are entirely rendered in WebGL.
atom_arranger··on How Discord Stores Billions of Messages (2017)
I hadn't noticed some of those. I don't use Discord a ton, just enough to know it works better than Slack I guess, at least what they do support uses markdown syntax.

No bulleted lists... that's disappointing.

Maybe worth upvoting:

atom_arranger··on How Discord Stores Billions of Messages (2017)
Yeah, I have done that. It’s really clunky. I’ve also done it to be able to use headings and other things that I’d prefer just worked in the main chat.
