atlantas··on How Russia Took over the Internet in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine
Starlink combined with decentralized finance is how we put authoritarian governments into the rear view of history.
atlantas··on Bitconnect founder indicted in global $2.4B cryptocurrency scheme
With crypto you can transfer your wealth across borders away from oppressive regimes or an incoming army by memorizing 12 words.

It's hard to overstate how valuable that is for anyone who finds themselves in that position, and it's becoming more relevant by the day.

atlantas··on A quick breakdown of what SWIFT is and why it matters
Unfortunately many won't until they find themselves in a circumstance where decentralization is of vital importance. At which point it may be too late.
atlantas··on Ask HN: How to keep tech running in the apocalypse?
Good question. Relatedly, could a cyberwar with Russia or China take down our grid? A cyberwar almost seems inevitable at this point. And would the answer in regards to keeping tech running be different for apocalypse vs cyberwar?
atlantas··on Russia to restrict Facebook access for 'censoring' its media
What are they saying?
atlantas··on Factorio Friday Facts: Steam Deck, Ghost bugs, Docs improvements
Why? It's already arguably underpriced at $30.
atlantas··on Two new ways of extracting lithium from brine
Let's say we decided to go all-in on transforming the US to 100% renewable. Solar, wind and enough batteries to ensure continued power for times lacking sun/wind. For all homes, businesses, industry, transportation.

Do we have enough lithium and other materials for that? And what is the environmental/carbon cost of extracting and refining it? I assume it would be net positive, but I don't know for sure, nor to what degree.

atlantas··on Why the West is reluctant to deny Russian banks access to SWIFT
Germany shutting down their most reliable source of clean energy, nuclear energy, is an incredible self own. Hopefully now they will reverse that and quickly for all our sake.
atlantas··on Ukraine is a major producer of neon gas, critical for lasers used in chipmaking
That's highly relevant! China may spend 1/3, but they are more efficient. We probably waste 1/2 or more of our spending. So it's possible we are closer to parity than it would appear if solely comparing budget.
atlantas··on Ukraine is a major producer of neon gas, critical for lasers used in chipmaking
Wasn't that what people were saying about Russia's aggression too? Yet here we are.
atlantas··on Ukraine is a major producer of neon gas, critical for lasers used in chipmaking
90%! Did we really let ourselves become so reliant on Ukraine and Taiwan for computer chips? Taiwan being the next country most under threat.

In fact, Reuters just reported that "Taiwan warns Chinese aircraft in its air defence zone"

atlantas··on Russian forces invade Ukraine after Putin orders attack
Russia recognized weakness and appears to be correct about that. The head of the German army just confirmed they are not prepared! Google translation and source below.

"In my 41st year of peacetime service, I would not have believed that I would have to experience another war.

And the Bundeswehr, the army that I am allowed to lead, is more or less blank. The policy options we can offer in support of the Alliance are extremely limited.

We all saw it coming and were unable to get our arguments through to draw and implement the conclusions of the Crimean annexation. That doesn't feel good! I'm eaten!

NATO territory is not yet under direct threat, even if our partners in the East feel the constantly growing pressure.

When, if not now, is the time to put the Afghanistan mission behind us structurally and materially and to reposition ourselves, otherwise we will not be able to implement our constitutional mandate and our alliance obligations with any prospect of success."

atlantas··on Soybean oil affects hypothalamus, causes genetic changes in mice: study (2020)
My understanding is that most of the oils we use are unhealthy. They are highly processed and inflammatory.

The good oils are avocado oil, extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil.

Is this correct?

atlantas··on Show HN: Supernotes 2 – a fast, Markdown notes app for journalling and sharing
I bought Minecraft for $19.99 a decade ago and it's still being updated.

Also there are lots of SaaS products that have died in that time. A subscription isn't a guarantee that it'll last.

atlantas··on Save your Phantom wallet details in 1Password
But then they'd have to rebrand to 2Password!

(I have the same fear though. I worry about having everything potentially compromised via a single string.)

atlantas··on U.S. Secret Service Launches Cryptocurrency Awareness Hub
To be fair, P/E ratios, financials and stock market regulation didn't prevent this:

$PTON (Peloton) is -77% in the past year

$ZM (Zoom) -67%

$CLOV -82%

$HOOD (Robinhood) -70%

$ROKU -71%

$TWLO (Twilio) -59%

$DOCU (Docusign) -52%

Bitcoin is -28% over the same time period. Ethereum +51%.

atlantas··on Logging at Twitter
We now use Splunk

That could have fit in a tweet.

atlantas··on Key senators have voted for the anti-encryption EARN IT act
Not only urge them to oppose it, but make it clear that it's a dealbreaker.

I will vote you out if you support this bill. End of story.

atlantas··on France to Build Six New Nuclear Reactors
Then we need to remove the 15 year delay. It's not a law of the universe that it needs to be that slow.
atlantas··on Key senators have voted for the anti-encryption EARN IT act
I don't understand why people keep voting them back in?? They've been useless for so long, yet people continue to check the box next to their name. Why?
atlantas··on Twitter misses ad revenue and user growth estimates
Thanks, that's useful.

What I don't get about twitter as a company: Why do they have so many employees? If they scaled back they could have a nice business as it is.

atlantas··on Is human behavior just elaborate running and tumbling?
Those are mostly examples of peacocking (displaying oneself ostentatiously), which has an evolutionary basis.
atlantas··on U.S. Political Party Preferences Shifted Greatly During 2021
This. I was a lifelong Democrat, but no longer. I am still gobsmacked with how they abandoned free speech, the working class, bodily autonomy, and turned science into religion. They've been captured by the Twitter laptop class.
