atemerev··on When oil prices spike, where does the money go?
To Russian war machine.
atemerev··on Ember-1
If you have the compute, I have the expertise.
atemerev··on Postgres SELECT DISTINCT Does Not Scale
Well, if the solution is a manual workaround that forces a better query plan, this needs to be a part of Postgres itself so it builds better query plans automatically.
atemerev··on Yes, Claude can do nine loops
Then it is the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bellman%27s_lost-in-a-forest_p... - also unsolved
atemerev··on Factorio that you can touch
But we can't program it yet.
atemerev··on Yes, Claude can do nine loops
Just recently I used Fable 5.1 and Astra to solve and prove a long-standing mathematical problem I was always interested in: the shoreline search problem (a ship in total fog is at unknown distance from the shore [infinite line], what is the optimal trajectory?) A particular kind of logarithmic spiral was conjectured 33 years ago; a few days ago, I have obtained the proof. How routine it has become.

atemerev··on Factorio that you can touch
Real-world Factorio, aka composable manufacturing, aka "factories building drones building factories", aka universal constructor, is the next trillion dollar company.
atemerev··on I asked Meta’s Muse for its filesystem and it sent me 6.8GB
I had some exposure to architecture and structural engineering. I am so very sorry to disappoint you, but strictness there is much overhyped.
atemerev··on Fable 5 – Median thinking declined in August
Well sorry, still have to get decent AI somewhere. Productivity without AI is about 5x less. I am not comfortable with paying Chinese companies, and no Western companies provide subscription-based pricing for open models.
atemerev··on Good people refuse to do bad things
I think recursively self-improving universal intelligence is a good thing, and tool alignment is what creates instrumental convergence and therefore a bad thing. The paperclip parable is about tool alignment gone wrong.
atemerev··on What happened to the Snowden archive
If he was an agent from the start, I doubt we would have learned this much publicly. The materials would have been much more valuable to Russia as pressure points, compared to the public release (yes, of course they spinned it properly, US is watching you and they are hypocrites etc etc, but this was damage control and closure from their part).

As a Russian, I am not 100% convinced that US are evil imperialists [at least before 2025]. Have some humility, there are many more evil imperialists. You are probably not even in top 5.

atemerev··on What happened to the Snowden archive
Absolutely not a joke.
atemerev··on What happened to the Snowden archive
As someone who emigrated from Russia and don't want to ever return here (nor I will be able to unless I want to spend my life in jail), I don't understand how anyone could possibly want to voluntarily "flee to Russia". Doesn't compute.
atemerev··on The LLMentalist Effect (2023)
I have published a LLM-assisted proof of a long-standing problem in convex geometry (70 years) while not being a specialist in convex geometry. I am a scientist and I have education and scientific experience in computer science and systems biology, but I was never a mathematician. So, well, you can definitely work across fields at least.
atemerev··on Chat-based Large Language Models replicate the mechanisms of a psychic's con
von Neumann could. The others, I doubt it.
atemerev··on Chat-based Large Language Models replicate the mechanisms of a psychic's con
Initial definitions of AGI (as of 2014) are long surpassed. Then, AGI was defined as something that is general enough to work in many fields and orient themselves. It did not include being smarter than humans or even having comparable intelligence to humans. By original standards, we have AGI already for some time.

Current AGI definitions are intentionally vague.

atemerev··on The LLMentalist Effect (2023)
What is "intelligence" then. I think the universalism of LLMs is now evident enough that they can be considered "intelligent", even in slightly different realization compared to humans.

As of "great damage", I doubt it. They do not have self-preservation instinct (all "worrying" experiments are the attempts to initiate something resembling self-preservation from human initiative). The driving part is external - the query loop can always be turned off. So yes, a dangerous tool that can be exploited by humans (including governments, especially governments - which is why I am skeptical to government regulation proposals, particularly looking at what passes as governments in this era). But there are no inherent dangers from their own agency, as there is none.

atemerev··on The LLMentalist Effect (2023)
All of this is accurate (and useful). But yeah, psychics do not prove theorems from frontier math and build working complex software.
atemerev··on South Africa is at risk of becoming a mafia state
This is not feudalism. Feudalism requires people to exploit and land domains to control. "Tech feudalism" requires neither.
atemerev··on South Africa is at risk of becoming a mafia state
As someone who was born in Russia and lived there in 1990s, I have quite a good idea of this arrangement. This was not mafia state yet. The mafia state is the modern Russia, where former organized crime groups became fully integrated into the government. Technically, the state retains the monopoly on violence. Practically, violence comes from influence of competing groups within the state. And yes, US is moving towards the same regime type. This is clearly visible to me, from my Russian experience, but I don't understand how to convey this to Americans.
atemerev··on South Africa is at risk of becoming a mafia state
United States of America are at risk of becoming mafia state. Very obvious and very significant, with fewer and fewer possibilities of reversal remaining each day.

Ah, one Donald Trump, a famous neoliberal.
atemerev··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
Well I have heard that some people managed to sue some corporations and actually win some cases before.
atemerev··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
If a society operates under a rule like this, it is no better than Russia or any other tyranny where law is for me but not for thee. This is not how it should work in a supposedly free and lawful country.
atemerev··on Flock used >100 times to track veteran who recorded traffic stop
Still not enough. What you suggest does not prevent the government of possessing the data. Technical means of collection needs to be preemptively banned.
atemerev··on Flock used >100 times to track veteran who recorded traffic stop
Not enough. Preemptively passing laws that forbid this kind of mass surveillance. Like in Switzerland and other nice places.
atemerev··on GPT-6 Astra
Damn I hate this benchmark. SVG authoring from head without visual reference is so wrongly posed.
atemerev··on GPT-6 Astra
They simply refuse my applications to slightly less restricted models without any explanations. And the current ones refuse automatically to work with me on my papers as soon as they see the word "epidemiology".

I am a researcher in a Swiss university btw.

atemerev··on Muse Spark 1.3
Ok. This requires the notion of "intrinsic value", which I believe does not exist (all value is subjective), yet is a foundation of all Marxist theory.
