atdt··on An intro to finding things in Linux
It's astonishing that searching for a file name by substring across a file system is still not instantaneous on most systems. On my laptop (a 2GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5), `find / -iname 'quux' takes 2 minutes to find matches across an APFS partition with 2m files. Grepping for a substring in a file with 2m lines takes a few milliseconds. Why don't modern file systems implement something like the `locate` database, except one that is always up-to-date, so that scanning for a file does not require expensive traversal?
atdt··on NYT journalist hacked with Pegasus after reporting on previous hacking attempts
Forget Y Combinator -- come build the next great surveillance start-up at the IDF's Unit 8200, the world's greatest hacker school and incubator for mass surveillance start-ups. With generous subsidies from US taxpayers, Unit 8200 lets you level up your surveillance game by practicing on 4.5 million Palestinian beta-testers. (Go nuts, it's not like they can sue you!) Plus, say goodbye to those moral qualms -- at 8200, you'll acquire the unshakeable conviction that you're a Good Guy fighting the Bad Guys. When you graduate, the IDF will keep the data you collected, but the skills you acquire and the friends you make are yours to keep forever.
atdt··on SHA-1 'fully and practically broken' by new collision (2020)
By default Git keeps inaccessible/orphaned objects for two weeks before they are garbage-collected.
atdt··on New Ways to Be Told That Your Python Code Is Bad
It used to be slightly faster in Python 2, because True could be reassigned, so its value had to be loaded and checked with every iteration.
atdt··on Canada calls screen scraping ‘unsecure,’ sets Open Banking target for 2023
Regulation E does not waive consumers' liability for unauthorized transactions; it merely limits the amount of liability. The liability limit increases sharply if the consumer does not report the fraud within 48 hours.
atdt··on First Look: macOS Monterey Public Beta
There are billions of people who are adept at using cell phones but have never owned a personal computer. Some of them can afford Apple products, but may not have thought they needed or wanted a different form factor before this year. Apple is betting that they will want a device that can act as a seamless extension of the computer they already have (their cell phone). Apple is doing this by gradually purging all things that aren't first-class on mobile, be they user interface affordances or the x86 instruction set.
atdt··on Ask HN: Have you switched from management to IC?
Individual contributor. A software engineer who does not manage.
atdt··on All music used by Quebec government services must feature Quebec artists
Only Quebec.
atdt··on Linux on Chromebooks just might get me through a masters in computer science
How long did it take you to go through the program? Any advice / regrets?
atdt··on HN “Why Not Simply”
To echo a comment I made a couple of months ago: "why not simply..." is a way of thinking out loud and providing an opening for someone more knowledgeable to explain what is being overlooked. It makes for interesting threads.
atdt··on Launch HN: Fig (YC S20) – Autocomplete for the Terminal
How?
atdt··on Modern C++ Won't Save Us (2019)
I read that sentence as applying to security-critical software. i.e., I don't think the author would insist that Quake II be rewritten in Rust.
atdt··on Deutsche Bank Whistleblower Vanishes
I can't load the article, but I found this piece published by the Times in 2019: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/01/business/val-broeksmit-de...

It describes Broeksmit as "an unemployed rock musician with a history of opioid abuse and credit card theft," so his disappearance could have any number of explanations.

atdt··on Open Source Goes to Mars
It looks like Python libraries are somewhat over-represented here because they credited every library in the Python dependency graph, but didn't do the same for dependencies in other languages. For example: lxml depends on libxml and libxslt, which are not credited.

The reason for the discrepancy is probably the lack of a straightforward, programmatic way to view the dependency graph of a C library. But they could have probably gotten a pretty good approximation by looking at Debian package dependencies (e.g., 'apt-rdepends python3-lxml').

This would massively expand the credits, but that's sort of the point here, no? (i.e., to celebrate the massive tapestry that is the open source ecosystem.)

(edit: I e-mailed Nat with this suggestion.)

atdt··on Open Source Goes to Mars
By my count, six of the sixty projects cited were initiated by the amazing Armin Ronacher (aka mitsuhiko), whose genius for designing and implementing clean, intuitive library interfaces has, for the past decade or so, been a boon to the world of open-source software development. Kudos to him.

[*] click, flask, itsdangerous, jinja, markupsafe, and werkzeug

atdt··on History of IRC (Internet Relay Chat)
Speaking of IRC and the Gulf War, I remember reading somewhere that the US Army was using IRC and at one point it was used to coordinate airstrikes. I don't have a source for this, and it certainly sounds fantastical, but maybe someone here could corroborate it (or refute it decisively).
atdt··on Is that ship still stuck?
It's a way of thinking out loud and providing an opening for someone more knowledgeable to explain what is being overlooked. It makes for interesting threads.
atdt··on Apple now lets you transfer your iCloud Photos to Google Photos
Frustratingly, support for Google Photos in rclone is handicapped by the limitations of the Google Photos API: you can't download Photos at original resolution. This is documented on your second link.

atdt··on Open source chess developers warn about a commercial engine based on Stockfish
Public shaming can be remarkably effective and does not preclude legal action later on if shame itself is insufficient.
atdt··on Gary Taubes: 'Obesity isn’t a calorie problem, it’s a hormone problem'
His answer to "what do we know so far?" is that "the most impressive research" was an experiment with no control, conducted by a start-up, which then published the results on their company blog. OK, next.
atdt··on Ideal Chess – drop chess perfected?
Fischer Random Chess (aka Chess960) is meant to address exactly that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fischer_random_chess

It has a large online following.

atdt··on FireEye Shares Details of Recent Cyber Attack
Bluffing would be very risky, if turned out the attacker really was a high school kid, or the exploit was trivial. I am inclined to believe them.
atdt··on The Few, the Tired, the Open Source Coders

atdt··on 13-Year-Old, Nicholas Sharkey, Creates a RISC-V Core
That's amazing. I Googled you and was very happy to see that you are still creating new things, after all these years. I aspire to that!
atdt··on How journalists use youtube-dl
I run a simple service that syncs a private YouTube playlist and publishes it as an audio-only podcast feed. When I come across talks that I find interesting, I save them to the playlist, so I can listen to them while walking, exercising, etc., because I find it much easier to absorb new information if I can move around. This has been a huge boon to me personally, and I'm very worried about losing it.
