atahanacar··on Show HN: htmz – a low power tool for HTML
It is right at the end of the first sentence.
atahanacar··on Friction is Good: Let's add it to our digital experiences
I don't understand what the writer is proposing here. How is slower = secure?
atahanacar··on [dead]
Even worse, it's not just "looking". From the actual source:

>Using the Qualtrics heat map tool, they were instructed to imagine themselves walking through these areas and to click on the area(s) of the image that stood out to the most to them.

They were asked to click. It wasn't even eye tracking.

atahanacar··on LineageOS is currently installed on 1.5M Android devices
Still more secure than using a browser on Windows, I guess. If that's acceptable, an outdated version or a custom ROM should be even more acceptable. Devs can also selectively disable features that they might deem too insecure.
atahanacar··on LineageOS is currently installed on 1.5M Android devices
During the late 90s, Turkish banks had to invest quite heavily on their IT infrastructure after new regulations. All that investment paid off in my opinion, as we can enjoy very high quality mobile and online banking.

Having a young population is also a big incentive for banks and government to invest in relatively newer tech.

atahanacar··on LineageOS is currently installed on 1.5M Android devices
Turkey. I've tried 4 different banks and so far all of them had a similar warning but worked completely fine.
atahanacar··on LineageOS is currently installed on 1.5M Android devices
I don't understand why banking apps don't work with root/ROMs. In my country, if your phone is rooted or you have a custom ROM installed, banking apps just warn you about it, saying "Your phone is rooted, if you don't know what it means your safety could be compromised", allowing you to disable further warnings.
atahanacar··on Netflix: Piracy is difficult to compete against and growing rapidly
>What are non-tech-savvy people actually using for piracy these days?

Where I live, they search for "watch blabla online 1080p free". Way less time consuming than actually using streaming services or torrenting.

Also, you can easily torrent on Android.

atahanacar··on My favourite Git commit (2019)
Why not stylize it as typographic but store it as a "regular" double quote though?
atahanacar··on My favourite Git commit (2019)
>smart quotes

I never understood why a "stylistic" choice requires separate characters. If we don't need a serif and non-serif version of every character and instead leave it to the software, why can't we do the same with the "smart" quotes?

atahanacar··on Anki – Powerful, intelligent flash cards
I am also speaking from experience with medicine, there is no way I can create cards as good as Anking's and still have time left to actually study/review.
atahanacar··on Anki – Powerful, intelligent flash cards
You aren't generating the information though. You're learning it from an existing source.
atahanacar··on Anki – Powerful, intelligent flash cards
Are you using Duolingo for Japanese? If so, please stop. There are better and more efficient ways, as you've probably noticed. Anki (with a Core3k or similar deck, 10-50 new cards a day depending on your daily life) + reading is the way to go in my opinion. You can use jpdb to see your progress relative to the material you want to read.
atahanacar··on Anki – Powerful, intelligent flash cards
>if you write the cards yourself instead of using a preexisting deck

I disagree with this. Anki's power comes from spaced repetition. Spending your time creating cards instead of actually reviewing the material is very inefficient. If high quality decks exist for the topic you're learning, use them instead. I've learned this the hard way.

Fields like medicine and language learning (you will still need to create your own deck for sentence mining but that's different as it's not a time sink) have great decks. For actual "niche" topics though, creating your own decks is your only choice.

For people who are going to create their own decks: check the Anking deck to see how to create "great" cards.

atahanacar··on Sxmo: Linux tiling window manager for phones
The closest thing I can think of is KISS Launcher.
atahanacar··on Japan's precision moon lander has hit its target, but appears to be upside-down
>Opening a new door in many senses (or "in different ways" if you want to take some liberty), from now on, missions that couldn't be done until now will become possible. Isn't it the most important (thing)?

Translation for those wondering.

atahanacar··on What's something difficult programmers make look easy?
>Hold up, mip mapping is not a way to save RAM in fact it consumes more RAM because not only do you need to have the full-size texture in RAM you also need to keep smaller copies in RAM.

While that's how it's mostly used today, mipmapping refers to storing scaled-down versions of the same texture along with the original texture. You don't have to load all of them to RAM (or VRAM). You can simply store the mipmaps on a hard drive, and only load the required mip levels to the GPU, thus saving VRAM. This way, you are using mipmaps as texture LODs. Think about satellite images of Google Maps.

>What it does save on is memory bandwidth, because you don't need to sample from the full-size texture

Not exactly. It does save memory bandwidth, because you're sampling less texels and reducing cache misses, not because you're sampling from a smaller texture. You're simply not downscaling the texture on the fly, instead using precalculated downscaled pixel values.

atahanacar··on SpaceX launches 4 people for private mission to the International Space Station
>He is from the secular demographic

This is an understatement. He was purged from the military and jailed by Islamists/Gülenists/Erdoğan using fabricated evidence and cultist judges, for "attempting a secularist coup".

I don't think it is "essentially" for propaganda. This would happen regardless, propaganda is just a side-benefit. Saying that he's "just a space tourist" would be like calling scientists that go to Antarctica for experiments "polar tourists". It is definitely overblown by the government media though.

atahanacar··on Microsoft limits institutional cloud storage space for environmental reasons
Exactly. It is in companies' best interest to keep the device support as short as possible as a way of planned obsolescence, so they can somehow convince consumers (especially the rich western ones) they need a new phone every year (or two). In truth, for the majority of the users, a flagship should last for at least 5. It's not like what we do on phones get computationally more expensive, except the bloat and lack of optimization (both the OS and apps, due to unnecessarily fast processors).
atahanacar··on Microsoft limits institutional cloud storage space for environmental reasons
I think the real e-waste is buying a new phone so often that your house is flooded with old chargers.
atahanacar··on Can ultraviolet lightbulbs end the next pandemic before it starts?
>If the band develops a suntan except for under the tape, you've got a good bulb.

Beware, heat from the lamp can also cause a "suntan". That's why checking under the tape is a mandatory step. If even under the tape is tanned, it is caused by heat and the test is invalid.

atahanacar··on Autonomous trucking is harder than autonomous rideshare
Yet you need to lay and maintain roads, you're limited to where roads and RFID signs go. You also have the added inefficiency and environmental problems of rubber-to-asphalt contact. In addition, you need to carry batteries which means even more inefficient transportation.
atahanacar··on Sit.
That's why I've installed adblock on every relative/friend's browser. Also disabled browser's notifications.

Then one day one of them blindly followed instructions to remove it so they can access an online newspaper. The only time they could actually follow instructions, it was actually malicious.

atahanacar··on Sit.
>So, it'd be hard to pull off such an attack.

How many people actually read prompts? People literally share 2FA codes with scammers over the phone even though the SMS itself tells them not to share it with anyone, including their own support workers.

atahanacar··on Fixing annoying blue standby lights
Duct tape is/was actually duck tape. Duck is the name of a fabric.
atahanacar··on Ban of the printing press led to the decline of the Ottoman Empire
It was a part of all the reasons the empire started to collapse. The main reason wasn't that printing press was banned, but the mentality behind the ban.

They failed to adapt. They failed to recognize what made previous sultans so successful. Instead of innovating, they decided it would be better to keep the status quo. When they realized the need to modernize, it was already too late. They had already become the sick man of Europe.

atahanacar··on Woman with two uteruses is pregnant in both wombs
Yes, exactly.
atahanacar··on Woman with two uteruses is pregnant in both wombs
>So do women with two uteruses have two menstrual cycles?

No, they don't. Uterus didelphys is caused by two tubes that normally join during fetal developed not joining. There are still only 2 ovaries. Though the bleeding might be irregular due to physical reasons.

Even if ovaries were doubled, there wouldn't be two cycles as hormones are centrally regulated and wouldn't be able to target specific ovaries.

atahanacar··on Privacy is priceless, but Signal is expensive
>Free is only free if your time is worth nothing

This is the worst take in technology. The main value of FOSS is freedom, not time or money savings. For many people freedom is more valuable than either.

Also, FOSS and managed aren't mutually exclusive.

atahanacar··on Scrollbars are becoming a problem
>I wonder if/when some subset of users will prefer a more controlled window layout engine, one which always opens windows into their own "space" on the screen.

You are describing tiling window manager users.
