How does this extrapolate to actually walking in the environment? There are so many differences between looking at a photograph and actually physically being in a space.

I'm fairly sure if I was shown those pictures in an environment where I'm under no physical threat I'd point to the brightest spots.
There's a big assumption that men don't think about these things, and that men's approach to walking down dangerous streets (in a way that projects confidence) isn't a safer method for them.
