asylteltine··on Spain confirms nuclear power phase-out, extends renewable projects deadlines
This is a fucking stupid decision. Nuclear fuel is incredible and basically free when you factor in energy density. We have effectively unlimited uranium in the world. Nuclear waste disposal is a solved problem. This is just nonsense.
asylteltine··on ScummVM on the App Store
Locked downness is a non issue coming from a previous android fanboy. iOS is just superior in every way. No I don’t care that you can change some font on your android phone.
asylteltine··on BYD Overtakes Tesla as Most Popular EV Maker
Per capita or total? Of course the total may be bigger because there are almost 3 billion Chinese people.

Personally, I would never buy anything from a Chinese company. Who knows what kind of shortcuts and spyware they have

asylteltine··on Things are about to get worse for generative AI
This is true and I see it with cops and free speech as well. Everyone loves to hate cops… until they need them. Everyone wants to defund the police… until they are a victim of crime. Everyone wants to enforce certain speech patterns… until it affects them
asylteltine··on Things are about to get worse for generative AI
I certainly hope so. You can’t just steal content and call it “””AI”””
asylteltine··on Things are about to get worse for generative AI
And how are you supposed to make money from something you invent? Let’s say you make a hit video game. Without copyright people can pirate your game, steal the art, make unauthorized derivative works, etc. it’s just theft.
asylteltine··on What makes cheddar cheese taste so good?
Extra sharp of course
asylteltine··on The merge vs. rebase debate
I agree. Mercurial at Meta was THE BEST version control experience I ever had. In 2023, git is worse than mercurial. Stack sets are superior.
asylteltine··on Copyright is not a moral right, it's a monetization strategy
Yes, and? What’s the problem? I would have less incentive to do things if I couldn’t profit from it.
asylteltine··on Don't Say Velcro (2017)
This is literally a psyop. This is free marketing. Don’t fall for it.
asylteltine··on Smallest Typeface
Why isn’t the M missing the top center pixel? Seems like it would make it way easier to read
asylteltine··on Using Alpine can make Python Docker builds 50× slower
Yes and? Do you not check return values? Pythons allows you to just yolo call a function lmao. It’s awful. You can NEVER guarantee behavior with Python. Never. Go error checking is guaranteed to be either an error type or in the absolute worst case, a nil pointer panic.
asylteltine··on Using Alpine can make Python Docker builds 50× slower
How? It’s SO easy to read and you don’t need semicolons. How can it possibly be ugly?
asylteltine··on Using Alpine can make Python Docker builds 50× slower
> I mean, the easy solution is don’t use Python

:)

People will be much better off and happier if they switch to Go for 99% of tasks. I’ll understand if it’s python for machine learning.

asylteltine··on Using Alpine can make Python Docker builds 50× slower
I use scratch or distroless with a static binary. No nonsense needed! I love go.
asylteltine··on 4B If Statements
That’s right. Npm and the entire node ecosystem is just terrible. Specifically because you can get a production ready package from even Google, and you know it’s going to have some random useless package in the chain somewhere.
asylteltine··on 4B If Statements
The TikTok is fake. Obviously it was created to drive engagement. Everything you see on TikTok is there to manipulate your emotions.
asylteltine··on First new U.S. nuclear reactor since 2016 is now in operation
Methane and coal is the largest driver of climate change
asylteltine··on Generation Junk
I’ve had the same toaster for at least 5 years and it’s fine. It’s… a toaster
asylteltine··on First new U.S. nuclear reactor since 2016 is now in operation
Nuclear is the way forward. It’s a damn shame hippies stopped us from leveraging it. We literally wouldn’t have climate change if we kept increasing nuclear power plants in the 70s. It’s just a no brainer. Solar and wind are great but the amount of power they generate may as well be 0 compared to nuclear.
asylteltine··on The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement
They are copied. If I can say something like “make a picture of xyz in the style of Greg rutkowski” and it does so, then it’s a copy. It’s not analogous to a human because a human cannot reproduce things like a machine can. And if someone did copy someone artwork and try to sell it, then yes that would be theft. The logic doesn’t change just because it’s a machine doing it.
asylteltine··on The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement
Yes and OpenAI sells its copies as a subscription, so that’s at least copyright infringement if not theft.
asylteltine··on The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement
LLMs are not a fad for many things especially programming. It improves my productivity at least by 100%. It’s also useful to understand specific and hard to Google questions or parsing docs quickly. I think it’s going to fizzle out for creative content though at least until these companies stop “aligning” it so much. Hard to be funny when you can’t even offend a single molecule.
asylteltine··on Apple wins bid to pause Apple Watch ban at US appeals court
This isn’t that
asylteltine··on Apollo 11 vs. USB-C Chargers (2020)
> Who said women can't do math?

Nobody

asylteltine··on Japan to crack down on Apple and Google app store monopolies
This switch is only useful when it can be hacked. It’s SO much better when you can run whatever you want to run like emulators and other tooling. Or even crazy things, like backing up your saves!
asylteltine··on Matter, set to fix smart home standards in 2023, stumbled in the real market
After I wrote my comment I knew someone would write this. Yes, that’s what it is. Go ask the average smart house enthusiast what it is though.
asylteltine··on Datsun 240Z L24 Engine Full Rebuild [video]
Mymechanics videos are amazing. The level of detail and skill is just astounding. You should watch a random restoration video. He can make restoring a wooden spoon interesting
asylteltine··on Fed court rules for retired engineer told by state to not talk about math
It’s true. An expert witness is someone who can hold up in court not someone who is an expert in their field sadly.
asylteltine··on Matter, set to fix smart home standards in 2023, stumbled in the real market
The problem is no one knows what matter is and how thread is in the mix. It’s a confusing standard
