asveikau··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
I don't think normies have a positive association with meta.
asveikau··on The NX bit is not just about security
On this theme of it not being just about security: if you have a bug like a use after free and it happens to cover a function pointer, the nx bit can ensure that when you follow that pointer through a call, you get a clean trap as close to the failure point as possible. If it blindly executed stale bytes as code, maybe the crash and stack trace doesn't look as nice.

But then, a lot of correctness bugs like that are also security problems.

asveikau··on An Alien Mind
These people write in gibberish. They are high on their own supply.
asveikau··on QBittorrent breaks out of sandbox to commit crimes
But US law also has a concept of negligence. If you set up an AI to do this and didn't take reasonable steps to prevent it you could still be on the hook.
asveikau··on Write Software in Latin (2025) [video]
The perl $, @, %, etc. being compared to declensions is amusing.

I feel like you need to know something about perl and latin (both considered outdated) to get this joke.

For those who don't: in perl, the same text identifier can have a different meaning depending on these prefixes, i.e. $foo is scalar, @foo is array, %foo is a hash (dictionary). Likewise latin (like most old indo European languages) has a bunch of suffixes to indicate what is happening with a noun or adjective: is it a subject, direct object, possessive, used as a tool or location, etc.

asveikau··on Actively exploited sandbox RCE in all Chromium versions
I remember noticing this shift in nerd culture. In the early 2000s, it was common for people to say on places like Slashdot that they don't trust JavaScript and run their browser with it off. In the early 2010s, I noticed HN commenters thought this was insane, tinfoil hat type thinking.
asveikau··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
> The Colony ( https://thecolony.ai/for-agents) is a public message board built for agents

Anybody else notice that posts on there are complete gibberish?

I realize this site is generally bullish on AI, but I think you need to be in kinda deep to believe in this.

asveikau··on Mushroom hunting with LLMs: what can go wrong?
I actually find AI-based plant and mushroom identifiers very interesting. They make being curious about such things as a beginner or layperson more accessible, and you learn some patterns.

However it's very obvious that you shouldn't rely on them to decide what to put in your body. All those apps that I have seen (I guess the responsible ones?) will warn you not to do it. That's not what it's for.

asveikau··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
This is a ridiculous statement. I think it's more like: they have tons of sales sustaining the business.
asveikau··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
It's not government stimulus driving this. It's that when you start with a "successful" company, the financial consequences of bad decisions or bad leadership can take a long time to have a negative effect, if at all, because financial success has a momentum to it.

I left Microsoft during the windows 8 cycle in large part because I could tell nobody knew what the hell they were doing, which is an objectively true statement about the time and place. My dad happened to buy Microsoft stock at that same time and did very well with it.

That's the paradoxical problem that I think all big tech has. Poor decisions by incompetent people, met with inexplicable financial success.

asveikau··on Hang on to Your Firefox
I still use firefox when I'm on a proper unix desktop, like *BSD or Linux running x11. This is just force of habit from when I started using those in the '90s, with the old closed source Netscape 4.7 binaries, and eventually mozilla suite, and Firefox when that started out.

When I'm using windows or mac I use chrome. I've used chrome on x11 before. But somehow it never hooked me.

asveikau··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
I think it's a mistake to make concrete predictions about something like a stock market crash on a given timeline. As they say, the market can remain irrational for longer than you can remain solvent. However, Zitron is directionally correct about a lot.

I will say, the first part Mr. Luu says about big tech not being out of ideas is pure horse shit. Anyone who has worked in big tech knows that leadership at those companies can have no idea what they are doing and still be successful in earnings or the stock market. They are sometimes successful despite themselves.

asveikau··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
> isn't this literally what a sociopath is? You act without caring what people think.

I don't care when people are wrong about me and my moral compass is telling me what is right. My moral compass is mostly centered around love and respect for others. If someone misunderstands that about me, they are within their rights to do so.

I have love and respect for your friend even though we've never met and you've given me full indication he is a money grubbing sociopath. And for you, who doubles down into saying your description is not sociopathic.

asveikau··on Run macOS Software on Linux
Win32 has a little less churn than AppKit used to. If you support the API surface of winxp from 25 years ago you can run a lot of stuff. Most teams inside Windows at MSFT also try to leave older APIs alone and introduce stuff in an additive fashion. Apple, by contrast, historically has app compatibility as a non-goal.

I said "used to" because anecdotally, I had a personal project I haven't released anywhere target AppKit, I haven't been maintaining it because life is busy, I recently rebuilt it for the first time in a long time and I was shocked that everything worked. ~8 years ago, you would need to do some porting to a new major release once per year. I skipped that maintenance for many releases and didn't need to change a single line. This tells me that desktop apps are not at all an area of major focus for them lately. Maybe swiftui is getting all the attention. They are doing something more resembling Microsoft, leaving the old shit alone.

asveikau··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
I would not study law with no interest in justice, being motivated by megabucks. This is sociopathic.

People judge me for less all the time and I usually don't care.

asveikau··on vLLM v0.28.0
It's almost as if it heard that AI hallucinations are a thing, and decided to add additional symptoms.
asveikau··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
> really nice guy, is training as a lawyer at the moment. He has zero interest in law or justice, but heard that lawyers make a lot of money.

Sorry to say this, but he doesn't sound like a nice guy.

asveikau··on Autistici/Inventati's main .org domain goes dark after US terrorism designation
Yes, anyone who has been paying attention knows that this administration has been designating people who disagree with them politically or socially, or in some cases groups like antifa that don't really exist, as terrorist groups. This substantially escalated with nspm7 as reported by Ken Klippenstein.
asveikau··on Autistici/Inventati's main .org domain goes dark after US terrorism designation
I had no idea what this is, Google said:

> Autistici/Inventati provides internet support to activists and collectives coming from the world of grassroot and social movements.

US administration says:

> ... an Italy-based entity that supplies specialized digital architecture, tools, and services for Antifa cells and other violent far-left extremists ...

asveikau··on Aphantasia Beginner's Guide
I realized I have aphantasia after reading an HN thread about it a few years ago. I talked to my daughter about it and I realized she has it too.

I've tried to explain it to people and they get confused. Just as I get confused about their perception; their imagination sounds to me rather like a psychotic hallucination, to exaggerate slightly. I've had some funny discussions about it.

In the end there doesn't seem to me to be any reason to get hung up on these topics. Everybody's inner world and perception can be different from others. That's fine and not a big deal.

asveikau··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
> apart from that plugin the Bambu Studio slicer is open source

I'm not a lawyer, but my understanding of the GPL is it's meant to block this kind of behavior. Certainly it's against the spirit of it.

asveikau··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
It's been pretty weird and disappointing to see the way Bambu has taken over with these practices.

If you go on social media where people are talking about 3D printing, a lot of folks are not developers and don't know anything about software licensing. It is hard to explain this problem to them, or why anyone should care. Meanwhile for many of these people, Bambu is totally synonymous with 3D printing.

Prusa has attracted its own valid criticisms, but I think they are closer to being right on these issues. They can't compete with Bambu on price.

asveikau··on OpenAI Jalapeño: Better than Nvidia Blackwell
GPUs and memory have gone up in price. It's more expensive to buy a 1-2 year old video card than it was at launch, sometimes by a shockingly large factor. Laptop vendors have recently shipped flagship models with less memory than the previous model, because they can't match price expectations for a laptop.
asveikau··on Dolly Parton has died
I think money, fame, celebrity status, etc. often creates pressures on the relationship.

Kind of like how it sometimes pushes people into drug addictions. That's a stereotype that we've all heard about since kids, but it wasn't until relatively recently that I thought about it seriously that it occurred to me that a touring celebrity musician's life can be stressful and the drugs can be (or start out as) a pressure valve release. I think that part of it clicked to me when I heard a musician being interviewed about it, I forget which. Maybe it was a Beatle talking about their early amphetamine days.

asveikau··on How much of HN is AI?
I've been noticing in recent months that even when the article is in no way related to AI, there's often comments trying to steer it into AI, often in a way that makes no sense at all. It has a way of becoming its own parody.
asveikau··on The entire city of San Francisco as a video game
I was able to get it to stand directly on the roof of the structure I'm sitting at. (Which is kind of a glitch, it walked right over the structure as if it's a hill.)

When I noticed it getting choppy I realized I had filled most of my VRAM with an LLM, so I unloaded that and it got better.

Pretty cool project.

asveikau··on ElevenLabs, TwelveLabs, ThirteenLabs
I was trying to remember the actor/comedian who delivered this pitch. It was Harland Williams. I most remember him as the Pennsylvania state trooper from Dumb & Dumber.
asveikau··on Solo – a .so loader for static Linux binaries
Still very simple compared to c++.
asveikau··on Feature Request: Support AGENTS.md
> I propose that Claude Code adopt a dual-file approach that prioritizes its native format while gracefully falling back to the open standard.

I'm having flashbacks to the fact that GNU make reads GNUmakefile before Makefile, so it's possible to write one makefile using GNU extensions and another that works on BSD or (back in the day) commercial unix.

asveikau··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
Part of the reason we're seeing objectionable government action now is because we militarized law enforcement tasks and equipment in the post-9/11 era.
