asveikau··on English: A vs. An
I actually meant it as a continuum. In classical latin, ille and unus exist, but they are not articles. In the vulgar latin period circa 800ad, they are pretty close to articles. In modern romance they're articles.

You can't say "beyond a certain point" because what point that is varies with geography.

asveikau··on English: A vs. An
The further back you go in Indo-European languages, they don't have articles. It's a relatively recent innovation.

So for example latin didn't have them. Eventually they evolved from ille and unus.

Much of Eastern Europe still does not have articles.

asveikau··on How to Write with an LLM
> Your voice stays intact, but your work is faster, better, and less painful.

This sentence specifically seems like an LLM. It's hard to quantify that. They just take that sort of tone when they're needlessly summarizing what they already told you. "This thing contrastive thing remains important, but we got XYZ benefit."

asveikau··on How OpenAI Used Its Own LLMs to Design Its Jalapeño Chip
Just think of how the people of Xalapa, Mexico feel. They should send them a royalty check.
asveikau··on Flock cameras are riddled with security vulnerabilities and hardcoded creds
I don't think having credentials stored on the device is all that fatal. The device has to read them back, after all. What they did, however, is much worse: the credentials come from the MAC address. So they're literally broadcasted on every network packet.
asveikau··on Hackers Got Inside a Flock Camera
In an ideal world they'd have people whose job it is to monitor upstream activity in the components used in the firmware and maintain this. Sounds like they did not have that.
asveikau··on Hackers Got Inside a Flock Camera
I would recommend reading "The Nerd Reich" by Gil Duran for context on this question.
asveikau··on Flock cameras are riddled with security vulnerabilities and hardcoded creds
tldr from my skim, the two worst things:

* Probably vulnerable to CVEs that were patched in 2018 and 2021.

* Generates API key to phone home based only on its own MAC address.

asveikau··on Autism is genetic – and why this information matters now
Some of what you've quoted highlights my own belief on some of this:

Autism is also multiple things.

That may provide some insight about how there is not a "single `autism gene'" and how they hedged a bunch of these statements with "most" or "usually".

Maybe some day when we as a species understand brains better, some people will get a more precise label than "on the autism spectrum".

asveikau··on How my e-reader lost its stripes
I don't read comic books or graphic novels but it would not shock me if those are unusable on these little devices.
asveikau··on Building a Linux GPU Driver for the M4 Mac Mini in One Month
It may not just be about IP but also code quality. As an example, TFA calls the user mode portion "slop" in need of cleanup.
asveikau··on How my e-reader lost its stripes
When I googled the dimensions of that it sounded a bit too big for a pocket.
asveikau··on How my e-reader lost its stripes
I got an X3 a couple of weeks ago, they are dirt cheap and the form factor is amazing. It's so easy to leave it in the pocket and just pull it out when you have an idle moment somewhere out in public. I wasn't certain how comfortable reading would be on such a small screen but it works well. With crosspoint, you can sync your page position with koreader on a larger form factor device.
asveikau··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
To be clear I agree that another reason is pretty likely. I'm just phrasing it neutrally since I don't know.. Above all I'm saying it's weird. I'm used to thinking of twitter and all the others in the same category as wanting to drive user metrics up at the expense of a lot of other priorities. Preventing new accounts seems to run counter to expectations.
asveikau··on Claude is a Contrarian
> “Don’t contradict sentences”. I can be damned sure it will sprinkle contradictions everywhere:

> This wonderful feature does this, not that.

As a human native speaker of American English, if you told me to "not contradict sentences" I would have no idea you meant that you don't want me to write in this style.

In fact I would be pretty confused about what it means. Whose sentences can I not contradict? To stretch it a bit, does this mean if someone gets a prison sentence I can't speak against it? It's just a weird phrasing. I don't think it means anything.

asveikau··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
> signups are often still rejected with no explanation given

That's pretty odd. When I google this, there are claims that this is to prevent spam accounts. Obviously, if you choose not to take them at their word, one can read all sorts of odd reasons into it.

asveikau··on Mark Zuckerberg: "Cambridge Analytica" (2017)
I won't dispute that 2015-2017 was a turning point in many areas, but "cause of the political polarization" is a huge stretch. Political polarization has been going up for most of my life. You could perhaps put a start of it at the 1994 midterms. It was raging in the 2000s too.
asveikau··on Why is the x86 undefined instruction called ud2? Why 2?
It's common to use int3 for some of the scenarios mentioned in the article. (Like non-reachable code) This instruction is often used to trigger a break in the debugger.
asveikau··on Linux Zoom client proactively reading everything written to X11 clipboard
That explains a lot. I would guess incompetence.

I notice the browser version is a little resource intensive. I use it on freebsd and I need to renice the browser to -10 for it to be somewhat stable. (This is an improvement because I remember 6 years ago it didn't work on freebsd.) I ran it on a Mac last week and it spun the fan more than I'd expect.
asveikau··on Anthropic boss Dario Amodei calls for AI development to slow down
Sounds like they know there is risk of crash and they need an offramp.
asveikau··on Litelm: LiteLLM Without the Bloat
This readme, when it talks about all the different AI endpoints it can use, reminds me of something.

I'm not an AI bro, but I've dabbled. It's kind of remarkable that all the different providers speak the same "openai compatibile" https endpoints. In other realms of software development, real interoperability like that can be kind of rare. Even if people support conceptually the same API, everybody always puts their unique incompatible spin on it. In the dabbling that I've done, big incompatibilities seem rare.

> We have billions of Chinese phones and Windows laptops as proof of that

Nothing wrong with either of these. Your snobbery is showing.

By the way, normies have a negative impression of Microsoft, and also use their stuff.

> HN users are a tiny minority of social media users

I am not at all talking about HN users. I am not in an HN bubble. Maybe you are, and you are projecting this onto me.

asveikau··on San Francisco institution 'heartbroken and furious' after erasure of public art
I think I saw elsewhere that the owner has been the same for 35 years or something like that. So there is no relevant transfer of ownership.

Your opening statement here is pretty ridiculous I need to say. "Written agreements doesn't mean shit!" Then you just make up a scenario where the contract wouldn't hold up.

asveikau··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
That article is a few years old.

asveikau··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
I'm not playing games.

All I said to enter this thread was:

> I don't think normies have a positive association with meta.

And a bunch of you guys contested this for some reason.

asveikau··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
Here's what I found when I googled "polling on Mark Zuckerberg":

> Roughly 54% to 70% of Americans express an unfavorable view of him

> Zuckerberg is viewed negatively by both major parties. Democrats and Republicans alike report high rates of disapproval regarding his influence and leadership.

> Dislike for the Meta CEO spans all age groups, though younger adults display particularly high skepticism.

YOU GUYS are so far out of touch to say normies don't hate and distrust the people behind Meta. They will use the products but this is not a positive reflection on the brand at all.

asveikau··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
I think you need to recalibrate in your own mind what using a product means. It doesn't mean you like it, or the company behind it. It may also be due to monopoly status.

Do you like your utility company? Your phone company? Your ISP? Your insurance?

asveikau··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
Yes, the fact that they renamed from Facebook helps them buy some time before people figure it out. But they don't feel good about the company.
asveikau··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
This is different from liking them.
