astura··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
There were 709 living donor liver transplants in the United States last year.
astura··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
Know someone who developed type 1 diabetes in his 30s.
astura··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
Herbal cigarettes have been a thing forever. They are common on film and TV sets when actors need to smoke for a part but don't want the nicotine.
astura··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
It might be addicting, but it's still overcomable, since 2002 there's more former smokers in the US than active smokers. 66% of all Americans who have ever smoked have successfully quit.
astura··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
Smoking on public transit (and literally everywhere else too) was totally normal and common up until the 90s when regulations started to trickle in. When I was in elementary school teachers smoked in the teacher's lounge and would talk about when they used to be able to smoke in the classroom. My grandma would take about smoking while at work, and she worked as a seamstress.

Honestly? I think it's just a mindset.
astura··on Attention is all you have
I've seen much bigger dumpster fires on Hacker News threads than what my friends put on Facebook, which is 99% just personal updates and pictures.

Sounds like a personal problem if your friends are going around causing dumpster fires.

astura··on Attention is all you have
>Don't be so dense.

I'm not the one bragging on social media how I don't use social media. I'm not the dense one here.

astura··on Attention is all you have
You're on social media right now, Hacker News is social media.
astura··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
> Using real food to carefully craft a scene, no matter how "done up" it is, is still representative of what's in the product.

False, food ads use fake food, not real food "done up," straight up non-edible fake food. It's been like that since the dawn of time.

astura··on San Francisco Onion Futures Company
7 onion soup is a favorite of mine. I'm vegetarian so I omit the bacon and use veggie broth.

astura··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
>That needs to be illegal. I thought it _was_ illegal.

Ummm.... I have news for you, pretty much all ads have used fake food since the beginning of advertisements.

Nobody ever cared that McDonald's ads makes McDonald's food look appealing but all of the sudden when mom & pop places can do the same cheaply and easily there's lashing out saying it should be illegal? Wtf?

astura··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
The funny thing is, 10 years ago, people said photos on menus was a sign of extremely poor quality.
astura··on The first new cat species discovered in 100 years
pspspsps is biological , it's common noise to get a cats attention (in many places) because it stimulates their prey drive.

Only a handful of states have any concept of a recall election.
astura··on Giving up on smart rings
That's why they make fitness tracker like FitBit Air that looks like brackets, so you aren't wearing two watches.
astura··on Giving up on smart rings
I get this point of view totally, so I'll give you a different one. I pretty much wear one (cheap Fitbit) as a gentile constant reminder to do my workouts, keep active, and to increase my fitness. I also noticed that if the readiness score is very low, like single digits, I tire extremely quickly during a workout and it feels very frustrating so in that case I will give myself some extra rest. I cannot even a little tell the difference between high readiness and low readiness by the way I feel waking up or going through the day, but I also have anemia due to a genetic defect and am going through perimenopause, so not being able to tell is likely a "me" thing.

Sleep tracking isn't useful as far as trying to improve it for me, because, again, I'm in perimenopause, so my sleep is all over the place and my body just does whatever it wants. But I'm sure it is part of the readiness score or whatever.

Yep, it's mostly bots, shills, and children and it's nothing new.

astura··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
I have friends who dealt with the same thing with their father except the father insisted absolutely nothing was wrong, he was fine, everything was fine. They eventually got him diagnosed and into assisted living but it took literally years, plural, he lost thousands of dollars to scammers, and had multiple car crashes.
astura··on Show HN: The same nine streaming subscriptions cost $702/year more than in 2021
Agreed, $95.91 a month in 2021-03 is $120.91 in July 2026 dollars. The current cost is $154.41, so it grew $33.50 a month after accounting for inflation.

I am probably an outlier but I don't honestly know how much someone can watch on theses services to be always subscribed, I subscribe to watch something and unsubscribe after a month or two because that's when I'm well and done. My husband had some free three months of Disney+ and I don't think either of us watched a single thing on there in that three months. Tubi has better content than Disney+.

astura··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Most people are losing their facilities years before any formal diagnosis and plenty of people, especially those who don't want to lose their freedom simply won't go to the doctor for a diagnosis. Nobody can force someone to see a doctor.
astura··on All grown-ups were once children, but only few of them remember it
Yep, for all the moralizing about sports gambling people on HN do, they sure love to prime their children for it.

It also just helped me understand the value of money, which to say has served me well is a massive understatement. Plus a real understanding of the fact that there's cons dressed up as fun, not everything is as it appears. It's okay to say 'no' to high pressure sales tactics.

But, again, we simply just didn't have room in the house for junk carnival prizes from a practical perspective.

astura··on All grown-ups were once children, but only few of them remember it
I would have killed to play carnival games like that when I was a kid but they were absolutely strictly forbidden, because 1) they are obviously not worth the price (scam) and 2) prizes are just junk that we didn't have room in the house for anyways.

You can just say no. I have never played a single one of those types of games in my life because once I was old enough to work I understood my parents point of view. I'm actually thankful for them teaching me these sorts of lessons no matter how much I hated at the time. It's actually okay to not allow your children participate in cons and scams.

astura··on Getting your hands dirty is good for you
>It's good as long as you don't get sunburn or skin cancer...

too much sun ages you badly even without any sunburn. Hot dog skin.

astura··on Getting your hands dirty is good for you
Sadly most dog owners only pick up after their dog if someone else is around/watching. Most people on rural neighborhoods won't pick it up at all.
